Bruce Chatwin
Born 13th. May, 1940 in Sheffield, Britain; died 18th. January, 1989 in Nice, France.
British novelist and travel writer. His father was a solicitor in Birmingham. However, he was often away from the family while he sailed with the Navy. Bruce Chatwin was educated at boarding school and at Marlborough. He developed an interest in French painting and he also learned to speak French. In 1958 he joined Sotheby's as a porter in the Works of Art department. One day he saw in the salesroom a watercolour attributed to Picasso and declared it to be a fake. He made rapid progress and developed a reputation for spotting fakes. While still at Sotheby's he wrote his first novel Rotting Fruits , based on the process of securing the estates of collectors. He left Sotheby's in 1966. He started a university course in archeology at Edinburgh but flunked out after two of the four years of the course. He was inspired to travel and made expeditions to Iran and the steppes of Turkestan while supporting himself with journalism. He regarded the nomadic life to be an aspect of the way of life to have been ignored in human history, and he began a book on the nomadic alternative but it was never published. He became a writer with The Sunday Times Magazine , but left after five years to concentrate on his own writing. He quit his job at The Sunday Times with the telegram message: "Have gone to Patagonia".

Scholars Index Bruce Chatwin by Nicholas Shakespeare Bruce Chatwin was the golden child of contemporary English letters. Paradoxically, however, his books appeared relatively late in his life: until 1977, when the 37-year-old author published In Patagonia , this precocious, intense figure had occupied himself as an art specialist at Sotheby's, a journalist with the Sunday Times , an archaeologist, and a restless, perennial traveler. Once he got started, of course, Chatwin made up for lost time. By 1989, when he died of an AIDS-related illness, he had produced seven booksincluding two superb novels and his sui generis masterpiece

12. BRUCE CHATWIN
BRUCE CHATWIN. A TRIBUTE. It was at this time, just prior to his Patagonian journey, that I first met Bruce Chatwin, then a relatively unknown writer.
http://www.prospector-utah.com/chatwin.htm
BRUCE CHATWIN A TRIBUTE by Kerry Ross Boren He has been called the greatest novelist since Hemingway, and the foremost travel writer of modern times. The American novelist John Updike has described his style as "a clipped lapidary prose that compresses worlds into pages." It is no exaggeration; there were worlds within Bruce Chatwin. Bruce was a friend of mine. Probably no other person I have ever known had a more profound effect upon my career as a writer, or upon me personally. Certainly I am not alone in this. The novelist Andrew Harvey noted in a New York Times review of Bruce's last travel book, "The Songlines" (1987), "Nearly every writer of my generation in England has wanted, at some point, to be Bruce Chatwin, wanted to be talked about, as he is, with raucous envy; wanted, above all, to have written his books." During World War II Bruce's father, a lawyer in civilian life, served on a minesweeper in Cardiff harbor, leaving Bruce and his mother to move often, staying with relatives and friends at various places throughout Britain, including Stratford-upon-Avon, where he developed a precocious love for Shakespearean theater. When at last they found a house of their own in Birmingham, Bruce missed the moving and travel, and he "grew sick and thin" with "a case of what Baudelaire called "la grande maladie: horreur de domicile." The most outstanding memories of Bruce's childhood were the time his father took him and his brother on their first trip into the black hills of Wales - where they slept overnight in the family car by a mountain stream - and voyages to Brittany and Spain in the family sloop 'Sunquest', an eighteen-ton Bermudian vessel built for navigating the high seas.

17. BRUCE CHATWIN
BRUCE CHATWIN (1940 1989). Here are reviews of this book. 22-Mar-2000 USA BRUCE CHATWIN - A BIOGRAPHY.(REVIEW) (BOOK REVIEW).
http://weecheng.com/latin/chatwin.htm
BRUCE CHATWIN (1940 - 1989) One of the greatest travel writers of the 20th century. A controversial figure who romanticises the lands he wrote about. Every tourist I met in Patagonia had a copy of his book. Despite miscellaneous inaccuracies, the Patagonian tourism industry has a lot to thank him. In 1999, the first every full biography of this great writer was written. Here are reviews of this book.
22-Mar-2000 USA: BRUCE CHATWIN - A BIOGRAPHY.(REVIEW) (BOOK REVIEW).
By Clay, Rebecca A.
By Nicholas Shakespeare. Doubleday. 618 pp. $35
As he neared death at age 48, British novelist Bruce Chatwin (1940-1989) blamed his illness on, variously, a visit to a bat cave, a rotten thousand-year-old egg he had eaten in China, and a fungus previously reported only in a handful of Asian peasants and "a killer whale cast up on the shores of Arabia." Chatwin was really dying of AIDS, but mythologizing
lay at the heart of his life as well as his five novels. Now Shakespeare, a novelist, reveals the man behind the myths. Although
Chatwin burned piles of papers during his illness, the biographer still had plenty to work with. Chatwin's widow offered access to family papers and to restricted material at Oxford University. Shakespeare also gathered interview tapes, letters and diaries, and recollections from nearly everyone who crossed paths with Chatwin. The result is a comprehensive portrait of a man so multifaceted that art critic Robert Hughes called him not a person but a scrum. By the time Chatwin published his first novel, In Patagonia (1977), he was only in his thirties and had already been a renowned art expert at Sotheby's, a journalist, and an archaeologist whose pet theory was that settling down engenders human aggression.

Come and talk about it in the spike forum B ruce Chatwin was a truly singular voice in British travel writing, and whose silence is now all too apparent. Since his untimely death in 1989 of what was described at the time as a rare Chinese disease (but which was later admitted to be AIDS), several collections of his previously unpublished work have appeared. The latest of these is Anatomy of Restlessness: Uncollected Writings. This book, however, pays poor service to his name. Published under the auspices of a "sourcebook" of uncollected work it draws together various pieces from magazines and journals. The result is a misshapen assemblage that hides gems amongst the weak and the substandard. Chatwin's writing at its best is both thrilling and absorbing, capable of carrying the reader to untravelled lands, and Chatwin was always the best of companions. However, if Chatwin the writer was intriguing, Chatwin the man was so much more. His rich life, pushed and pulled by his demanding interests, was always present in his work. That is not say that he was example of that breed of traveller who batters you into submission with endless anecdote heaped upon anecdote. Rather, he introduces you to the sights of exotic lands, vast parties of characters, all set free to live an existence untrammelled by the author's irrepressible ego.

LESELUST eigene Meinung schreiben Bruce Chatwin - Traumpfade
Roman. S. Fischer TB, 394 Seiten, ISBN: 3596103649
Ersch.
