Although not politically active themselves, Tim’s parents had politics in their blood. One of his mother’s earliest recollections is sitting around the kitchen table in Dedham with her brothers and sisters, filling out nomination papers for legendary Boston Mayor James Michael Curley. On the other side of the family, Tim’s grandmother, Florence Lynch, is a descendent from one of Massachusetts founding families, the Spauldings, who were instrumental in the founding of both Braintree and Chelmsford. It was at Quincy High School that Tim Cahill first learned the lessons that would become his guiding principle: Through perseverance and willingness to work hard, anything can be accomplished. After graduating from Boston University, in 1982 he and two friends, Ed Graham and Joe Irvine, realized a dream by starting their own business. They worked hard to make that business grow for more than a decade, and they persevered to make their dreams come true. Tim was first elected at-large to the Quincy City Council in 1987, and this past year he was reelected to his 8th term by topping the ballot in both the primary and general election. In 1996 Tim successfully challenged Norfolk County’s only Republican elected official and was elected Norfolk County Treasurer. Now, Tim Cahill is bringing his experience and proven leadership to the campaign for State Treasurer to help steer Massachusetts through the challenging times we currently face.

Height: 5' 10"
Weight: 10st 11lbs

Millwall debut: Vs Bournemouth (2/5/98)
Millwall record: 1 League appearance One of a number promising youngsters to have progressed through the Youth ranks at The Den. Tim experienced mixed fortunes last season, being sidelined for several months with a foot injury before returning to make his league debut against Bournemouth in May. Like his compatriot Lucas Neill, Tim has made light of travelling halfway round the world, leaving friends and family at a tender age to forge a career in League football. His ability and attitude suggest that he could become a regular member of the first team squad this season. He also signed a four-year contract in July to stay at The Den until 2003.

I love his adventurous spirit, but even more, I love the way he subtly educates us about the world in his writing by the respect he brings to the places and people he meets, and by the narrative twists he often uses to illuminate the folly of our own preconceptions. I interviewed him a few weeks ago when he was in San Francisco promoting his new book, "Pass the Butterworms." Why did you get into travel writing in the first place; what was the impulse behind it?

March 14, 2000

Web posted at: 5:00 p.m. EDT
(CNN) Founding editor of "Outside" Magazine and best-selling author Tim Cahill joined Nature chat on Monday, March 13, 2000 to discuss his new project, an IMAX film entitled, "Dolphins." He is also the author of "National Geographic's Dolphins," a book, written in conjunction with the IMAX production. Both projects use science and breathtaking photography to tell the story of marine biologist Kathleen Dudzinski and her work researching the communication habits of wild dolphins. Mr. Cahill participated in the chat at the CNN.com studio. A typist was provided for him. The following is an edited transcript of the chat. Chat Moderator: Thank you for joining us today, Tim Cahill, and welcome!

Writers we love: Tim Cahill
By Don George L ast night, I shudder to report, I dreamed about Tim Cahill. Let me backtrack: Last week I wrote in this column about Jan Morris, anticipating her appearance in a travel writers' conference I was chairing later in the week. In that same column I also mentioned Pico Iyer and Tim Cahill, the two other travel writers who were guests of honor at the event. I intended to move on to a different topic this week, but after spending four summer- camp- intense days in the presence of these craft masters, in workshops and panels and dinners and readings and late-night beer and travel tale revels, my mind refuses to let go of them. Their words and their writings stay with me; their warmth and intelligence and generosity stay with me, too. We parted on Sunday and I went to work on Monday, half in the office and half still enmeshed in that conference, and then on Monday night I settled down with Cahill's most recent collection of stories, "Pass the Butterworms."

Tim Cahill answers readers' questions

Tim Cahill, Outside 's tireless roving reporter, has a new book out, a collection of 23 tales of adventures and mishaps that have appeared in Outside and other magazines. Pass the Butterworms: Remote Journeys Oddly Rendered will not only entertain, but give you that itch to pack up and head for parts little-known.
By Mark Bryant
Outside Online
A call to Tim Cahill at the end of January caught him a day before he embarked on yet another journey, this time to join a caravan in Mali, at the southern edge of the Saharan Desert. He expected to lose 20 pounds during the 240-mile trek from Gao to Tombouctou. The Caravan of White Gold has been happening for centuries, earning its name in the days when salt was traded for gold, pound for pound. Each of the scores of camels carries four 60-pound slabs of mined salt. Cahill, the everyman's adventurer, decided to plod along with the desert travelers. "I'm always on the lookout for things," Cahill says from the cool comfort of his home in Montana.

A Good Hair Week in Mongolia
After years of government oppression, the country that gave us Genghis Khan, the Attilla the Hun Show, and possibly the first Americans is rolling out the welcome mat. On an archaeological tress-hunt in the land of beneficent horsemen.
By Tim Cahill There were a dozen of us, riding the immense central Asian grassland on sturdy Mongolian horses. When I glanced back for a view of the glacier and the sacred mountain we had just come from, I saw two tiny specks inching down the steep, windswept hillside. I turned in my saddle and glassed the hill with a small Russian telescope. The riders were coming toward us at a stiff trot. They were at least two miles back and about 1,000 feet above us. Each man held something in his right hand. I could plainly see the glint of metal. "They carrying?" one of the Americans asked. "Yeah," I said, "both of them." Bayaraa Sanjaasuren, our translator, conveyed the information to the Mongolian wranglers. This was serious: We had yogurt riders on our tail. "Tchoo," half a dozen men shouted at once.

e x c e r p t "Pass the Butterworms" By Tim Cahill Villard Books, 283 pages, Nonfiction "y ou cannot," the fundamentalist missionary complained, "get the Dani to wear clothes. They just won't do it." The first missionaries arrived in New Guinea's Grand Baliem Valley in 1959, anxious to convert the Stone Age tribesmen who live there. They've done all right, I suppose, these missionaries, but the question of clothing still devils the least flexible among them. The fundamentalist sipped his tea. Aside from the "self-evident indecency" of human nakedness, he said, "it gets cold out here at night." And he posed a question to me, since I had been defending the Dani's right to dress (or not) as they pleased: "Why wouldn't a man wear clothes when it gets cold?"
