Tarzan was born in the jungles of Africa, but his creator first saw the light of day amidst more tranquil surroundings.
Edgar Rice Burroughs was born in Chicago on September 1st, 1875. His father, George Tyler Burroughs, was a Civil War veteran and now a successful businessman. Major Burroughs and his wife Mary had five other boys besides Edgar, but two of the children died in infancy, leaving Edgar the youngest of the family.
"Eddie" attended several schools during his formative years, often being shuttled from one to another due to the outbreak of various diseases. At this time it was standard to learn Greek and Latin in addition to English composition, and Burroughs would often lament his erratic schooling, which resulted in his (or so he said) learning little English while taking the same Greek and Latin courses over and over again. Despite his claims to the contrary, this early exposure to Classical literature and mythology would serve Burroughs well in his future writing career.
An influenza epidemic hit Chicago in 1891; hundreds died, and Edgar's worried parents wondered how they could protect their fifteen-year-old son. A few years earlier two of Edgar's brothers, George and Harry, had started a cattle ranch out west in Idaho. This seemed like a logical safe haven, so George and Mary packed Edgar onto an Idaho-bound train.

31. Donald M. Grant - Edgar Rice Burroughs
Marcia of the Doorstep and You Lucky Girl, two recently discovered texts soon to be published. Publisher's website.
http://www.grantbooks.com/edgar_rice_burroughs.html
A Golden Anniversary Bibliography of Edgar Rice Burroughs , compiled by Henry Hardy Heins, was the first book published by Donald M. Grant under the GRANT imprint. Published in an edition of 1,000 copies, it sold out upon publication and copies now sell for upwards of $600.00. Donald M. Grant, Publisher, Inc. is very proud to announce this special second printing which includes a 2001 Postscript by Dr. Henry Hardy Heins. This is a numbered edition of 1,000 copies, all of which are signed by Dr. Heins . Each book is enclosed in a handsome foil stamped black leatherette slipcase. This Golden Anniversary Bibliography of Edgar Rice Burroughs is the first serious book ever published dealing exclusively with Burroughs. It identifies in detail all of the known book and magazine versions of Burroughs' stories with clear and often fascinating guidance on how to tell them apart. Among the special features included are pictorial reproductions of all the full-page Burroughs' book announcements as they appeared in "Publishers' Weekly" from 1914-1948, the magazine artwork done by the famous J. Allen St. John (the illustrator so closely identified with Burroughs' work), photographs of Burroughs and his family that had never before been published, and a foreward by Hulbert Burroughs, the older son of ERB. One fabulous highlight is the inclusion of five obscure articles written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, including: "Entertainment is Fiction's Purpose" and "How I Wrote the Tarzan Books".

    Biography
American novelist, creator of the world famous character of Tarzan, one of the indispensable icons of popular culture. Burroughs also published science fiction and crime novels. Critics have considered Burroughs's fiction often crudely written and chauvinist. His books, however, are still widely read and usually more interesting than the films. It is true that Burroughs often portrayed Africans, Arabs or Asians as evil or comic, but the stories also contain several elements that have kept them 'politically correct': Waziri warriors are brave, and his cave girl Nadara and Dejah Thoris, the princess of Mars, are courageous and resourceful characters. Edgar Rice Burroughs was born in Chicago, Illinois, into a prosperous family. His father, George Tyler Burroughs, was a Civil War veteran. Burroughs attended several private schools, including the Michigan Military Academy, Orchar Lake (1892-95), where he was instructor and assistant commandant (1895-96). He served in the 7th Cavalry in the Arizona Territory (1896-97) and Illinois Reserve Militia (1918-19). After military career Burroughs was owner of a stationery store in Pocatello, Idaho (1898), and associated with American Battery Company, Chicago (1899-03). In 1900 he married Emma Centennia Hulbert (divorced in 1934); they had two sons and one daughter)
