Tell a Friend Lois McMaster Bujold Alert me when new Lois McMaster Bujold titles are added Bio: Lois McMaster Bujold is the Fictionwise 2002 Author of the Year! I was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1949. I graduated from Upper Arlington High School in 1967, and attended Ohio State University from 1968 to 1972. I have two children, Anne, born in 1979, and Paul, born in 1981. We resided in Marion, Ohio, from 1980 to 1995, and moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1995. I've been a voracious reader all my life, beginning with a passion for horse stories in grade school. I began reading adult science fiction when I was nine, a taste picked up from my father. He was a professor of Welding Engineering at Ohio State and an old Cal Tech man (Ph.D.'s in physics and electrical engineering, magna cum laude, 1944), and used to buy the science fiction magazines and paperback books to read on the plane on consulting trips; these naturally fell to me. My reading tastes later expanded to include history, mysteries, romance, travel, war, poetry, etc. My early writing efforts began in junior high school. By eighth grade I was putting out fragmentary imitations of my favorite writerson my own time, of course, not for any class. My best friend Lillian Stewart and I collaborated on extended story lines throughout high school; again only a fragment of the total was written out. The high point of my high school years was a summer in Europe at age 15, hitchhiking with my older brother.

Memory
by Lois McMaster Bujold Baen - 0-671-87743-7 - 462pp/October 1996
Reviewed by Steven H Silver The most recent Miles Vorkosigan novel is also the most recent in the internal timeline. It is a novel of changes and of endings and of beginnings. It points to a Barrayaran future which is extremely different from the books which preceeded it. For those who have liked the Vorkosigan novels as they were, I'm sure Bujold will continue to fill in Miles's biography. For those who prefer the direction set forth in Memory , I'm sure Bujold will continue to move Barrayar into the future. Memory begins about one year after Miles was killed and brought back to life in Mirror Dance . One of the side effects of his resurrection is a series of seizures, which he has tried to keep hidden from both the Dendarii and Simon Illyan at ImpSec. His cover is blown, however, when he has a seizure during an attempt to rescue a kidnapped Barrayaran courier, Lord Vorberg. Although Vorberg is rescued, Miles's seizure results in Miles cutting off both Vorberg's legs at the knees. This snafu results in Illyan having to cashier Miles from ImpSec, not for the mistake, but because Miles chose to falsify his report. Miles spends the first half of the book moping and feeling generally sorry for himself as he is stuck in an empty Vorkosigan House in Vorbarr Sultana. Events aren't made any easier when, after Miles introduces Duv Galeni's girlfriend to Gregor, the Emperor decides to woo and marry her and Galeni turns on Miles for being Gregor's pimp.

barrayar and beyond Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? Bujold currently writes the best space opera around. Most of her books involve the Barrayaran Empire, and a particular fellow named Miles Vorkosigan. Miles is the son of Count Aral Vorkosigan, arguably the most powerful man in the empire after the emperor himself; for a good bit of the series, in fact, the emperor is underage, and Aral is the Regent. Aral is also an extremely competent admiral in the Barrayaran space navy; Miles' grandfather, Piotr, was just as a good a general. (Military prowess is an important part of life on Barrayar). Now, due to a gas attack on Mile's parents while he was in utero, Miles is small; fragile; somewhat misshapen. An easy fall can easily break one or more of his bones. But he is also ambitious, honorable, brilliant, quick-thinking (though not always far-seeing), and refuses to let his handicaps slow him down. In the first book about Miles, The Warrior's Apprentice , he washes out of the Barrayaran navy, and is sent to his mother's home planet of Beta Colony to go to school. Instead, in one of the funniest rollercoaster rides I've ever read, step-by-logical-step, he ends up admiral of an entire mercenary fleet. Other books about Miles include (in no particular order)

Reviewed February 2000 This book is (at most) a prologue to Bujold's lengthy Miles Vorkosigan series: It takes place 400 years before Miles' birth and does not feature Barrayar or any of the other prominent elements of the Miles series. In it, the interstellar mining corporation GalacTech has genetically engineered 100 humans so have two extra arms and hands in the place of their legs and feet, the better to operate in zero gravity. Engineer Leo Graf arrives on their space station to train the first batch of the "Quaddies", who are in their early 20s. While there, he discovers that the Quaddies are often treated like lab animals without many human rights. And then, the announcement that artificial gravity generation has been invented endangers the future of the Quaddies altogether; no longer necessary for outer space work, they'll probably be sterilized and consigned to live in a compound on some planet under gravity for the remainder of their lives. Elements of the plot include a couple of Quaddies whose baby is about to be taken from them by GalacTech to be raised by more "objective" parents, and who resolve to escape from the station to live their lives elsewhere. This ends up underscoring both the naivete of the Quaddies, and the fear that baseline humans have of genetically engineered people.

A Very Short Biography
Born in Ohio in 1949, Bujold was an avid reader of science fiction as a teenager. She had her own science fiction success in 1985 when she sold her first story, "Barter", to the Twilight Zone. Then one year later she managed to get three of her novels published. She has won many awards for her work, including Three HUGO awards, one for the The Vor Game in 1990, one for Barrayer in 1992, one for "the Mountains of Morning" which also won a NEBULA award. She has won more HUGO awards than anyone with the exception of Robert Heinlein . Recently divorced, she now lives as a author and mother of two and continues to produce Science Fiction novels and short stories.
