James Boswell visits Ferney Boswell was a visitor at Ferney late in December 1764: stepped forth . I surveyed him with eager attention, and found him just as his print had made me conceive him. He received me with dignity, and that air of the world which a Frenchman acquires in such perfection. He had a slate-blue, fine frieze greatcoat night-gown, and a three-knotted wig. He sat erect upon his chair, and simpered when he spoke. He was not in spirits, nor I neither. All I presented was the 'foolish face of wondering praise'. they play at chess together . I stood by Monsieur de Voltaire and put him in tune. He spoke sometimes English and sometimes French. He gave me a sharp reproof for speaking fast. 'How fast you foreigners speak!' 'We think that the French do the same.' 'Well, at any rate, I don't. I speak slowly, that's what I do'; and this he said with a keen tone. I returned yesterday to this enchanted castle. The magician appeared a very little before dinner. But in the evening he came into the drawing-room in great spirits. I placed myself by him. I touched the keys in unison with his imagination. I wish you had heard the music. He was all brilliance. He gave me continued flashes of wit. I got him to speak English, which he does in a degree that made me now and then start up and cry, 'Upon my soul this is astonishing!' When he talked our language he was animated with the soul of a Briton. He had bold flights. He had humour. He had an extravagance; he had a forcible oddity of style that the most comical of our

James Boswell
WRITER Best remembered today as friend and biographer of Dr Samuel Johnson, Boswell was an extraordinary figure of eighteenth-century society. Vain yet good-natured, foolish yet charming, he was also conceited and a hypochondriac with a drinking problem. He forced himself upon eminent people, and bragged about the great men he knew. David Hume thought him a bit crazy. Yet for years Boswell moved in the same circles as Sheridan, Goldsmith, Rousseau, Voltaire and Walpole. And he was an inveterate notetaker. Boswell, born in Edinburgh, was the son of Alexander Boswell, an advocate who some years later was elevated to the bench of the Court of Session and took the judicial title of Lord Auchinleck, after the family estate in Ayrshire. At the University young James studied law but his heart was never in it - to his father's irritation he preferred high life in London and travel in Europe. In London, Boswell ("Bozzy" to all his friends) shamelessly badgered his contacts for an introduction to Dr Johnson. When they eventually met in 1763, the two men rapidly became friends. From the very first, the young Scot made notes of the great man's conversation, Johnson encouraging him to do so.

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Boswell, James Scottish biographer and diarist. He was a member of Samuel Johnson 's Literary Club and the two men travelled to Scotland together in 1773, as recorded in Boswell's Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides (1785). His Life of Samuel Johnson was published in 1791. Boswell's ability to record Johnson's pithy conversation verbatim makes this a classic of English biography. Boswell was born in Edinburgh. He qualified as a lawyer in 1766 but centred his ambitions on literature and politics. He first met Johnson in 1763, and following a European tour, established a place in his intimate circle, becoming a member of the Literary Club in 1773.

    Administrative/Biographical History
Auchinleck is situated in Ayrshire, in Scotland's large Strathclyde region, 21 kilometres east of the town of Ayr. The town has a population (based on 1991 figures at least) of 4,160. Auchinleck is associated with the Boswell family through the granting of the estate to Thomas Boswell, a 'cadet' of the Balmuto line, on his marriage to the daughter and co-heiress of Sir John Auchinleck in 1504. Thomas had been one of the court favourites of James IV and he died with the king at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. On his appointment as Lord of Session in 1754, Alexander Boswell (1706-1782) took the title of Lord Auchinleck. It was Alexander Boswell who had Auchinleck House built. His son, James Boswell, the diarist and biographer of Samuel Johnson, was born at nearby Auchinleck House, and is buried in the churchyard in Auchinleck.

A contempory cartoon of James Boswell. In one hand he holds "My Journal" and in the other "Materials for the Life of Sam Johnson LLD". James Boswell of Auchinleck's first claim to fame was as biographer of Samuel Johnson. In recent years, it his voluminous journals which have claimed our attention, for the detailed and opinionated chronicle they provide of the culture and society of his time. For the Ayrshire historian, the journals offer an unrivalled insight into the people and institutions which ruled the county in the second half of the eighteenth century. Whether friend (for example John Hamilton of Sundrum - "I esteemed him as an honest man") or sometime foe (for example Sir Adam Fergusson of Kilkerran - "a man who distinguished himself by his regard for religion, though his politics were bad"), Boswell recorded his thoughts on his neighbours and fellow lairds. They dined together, rode to county meetings in Ayr, deliberated on defence, the state of the nation, the improvement of their estates, exploitation of minerals, making the roads, and Boswell recorded much of what passed in his journals, usually giving particular credit to his own thoughts or witticisms. The Boswell papers reside at Yale University in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Yale has published a long series of Boswell Editions divided into two main categories: Trade Editions, for the general reader; and Research Editions, for the academic market. This site (Ayrshire History) has a list of the volumes available -
