B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Karen Blixen (1885-1962) Danish writer, who mixed in her work supernatural elements, aestheticism, and erotic undertones with an aristocratic view of life. Blixen always emphasized that she was a storyteller (fortaellerske) in the traditional, oral sense of the word. She drew her inspiration from the Bible, the Arabian Nights, the works of Homer, the Icelandic sagas, and the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen, her great countryman. Blixen's stories have inspired such film makers as Orson Welles and Sydney Pollack. She wrote in English and in Danish. 'Are you sure,' she asked, 'that it is God whom you serve?'
The Cardinal looked up, met her eyes and smiled very gently.
'That,' he said, 'that, Madame, is a risk which the artists and the priests of this world have to run!'

(from 'The Cardinal's Fist Tale') Baroness Karen Blixen was born in Rungsted, Denmark, into a well-to-do patrician family. She was the daughter of Ingeborg Westenholz Dinesen, and the writer and army officer Wilhelm Dinesen, whose adventuresome spirit and storytelling talents influenced deeply Blixen's imagination. She spent her childhood on the family estate in Rungsted. Throughout her life Blixen's outlook and manner were unabashedly aristocratic. At early age, Blixen showed an artistic inclination. She attended the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen, and also studied in England, Switzerland, Italy, and France. In 1907 Blixen made her debut as a writer with several short stories. In 1914 she married her cousin Baron Bror Blixen-Finecke, and went with him to Kenya, where they directed coffee plantation. They were divorced in 1921. Blixen ran the plantation by herself but in 1931 she returned to Denmark, after fruitless struggles with mismanagement, drought, and the falling price of coffee. Blixen's years in Kenya are depicted in OUT OF AFRICA (1937) - "I had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills." This opening also sets the tone of the autobiobragphy - nostalgic, calm, and stoic. The book ends with a view to the same hills: "The outline of the mountain was slowly smoothed and levelled out by the hand of distance." On the coffee-farm Blixen started to write her first book

Karen Blixen was born on her family's rural estate, Rungstedlund, 15 miles north of Copenhagen. The timber and stucco manor house faces the Oresund, the channel dividing Denmark and Sweden. At the age of 28, Karen Blixen left for East Africa to start a pioneer coffee farm with her husband (and second cousin), Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke. Best known as the author of the book that inspired the 1985 Oscar-winning film, Out of Africa , Karen Blixen (or Baroness Blixen, as she preferred to be called), was born into a rich Copenhagen family in 1885. She studied painting at the Danish Academy of Art and later in Paris and Rome.
In 1913 she married her second cousin, Baron Bror Blixen Finecke, and moved to British East Africa (today Kenya), where they managed a coffee plantation. Though it was tainted by tragedy, the time she spent in Africa provided Blixen with the material for her memoirs, Den Afrikanske Farm (Out of Africa written after her return to Rungstedlund just north of Copenhagen.
She lived and worked there until her death in 1962, producing her masterpiece Seven Gothic Tales as well as other works including Winter's Tales The Angelic Avengers and Anecdotes of Destiny

Karen Blixen/Isak Dinesen. Biography. Karen Blixen remains a complexfigure in the writing and history of colonial Africa.
http://www.emory.edu/ENGLISH/Bahri/Blixen.html
Karen Blixen/Isak Dinesen Biography K aren Blixen remains a complex figure in the writing and history of colonial Africa. Author, storyteller, and early colonizer, she helped to define Africa and its people for the many Europeans who read her novels, chiefly Out of Africa and Shadows on the Grass . Criticism of her work frequently shifts from admiration of her form to outrage at her portrayal of Africans. Karen Blixen's complicated life and work continue to be studied, debated, and questioned in light of both the colonial society she inhabited and the modern reality of a postcolonial world. Karen Blixen in Africa B lixen's marriage proved an unhappy one and resulted in divorce in 1921 as well as a battle with syphilis a few years earlier. Despite this, Blixen found her years in Africa to be her most liberating and challenging. After her divorce, she ran the coffee farm by herself and lived alone, a practice fairly uncommon at the time. She speaks of her years in Africa as a relief from her former life: "Here at long last one was in a position not to give a damn for all conventions, here was a new kind of freedom which until then one had only found in dreams" (29). Blixen found herself outside the Victorian world of Denmark and immersed in the aristocracy of colonial Africa. She earned the coveted status of an early settler-a position that gave her freedom and standing in society life. Her writing of Africa filters through this position of social privilege that enabled her to watch and comment on the natives and the land from a position of authority in the eyes of her time.

Karen Blixen
I had a farm in Africa, at the foot of the Ngong Hills.
This is how Karen Blixen starts her probably most famous novel Out of Africa, which has been hailed as the greatest pastoral elegy of modernism. She lived in Africa for 17 years of her life and this inspired her to write Out of Africa and Shadows on the Grass. She wrote them, and many of her other novels, under the well-known pen name Isak Dinesen.
Karen Blixen's compelling prose has captured an international audience, a phenomenon facilitated by her ability to write in English, as well as her native tounge, Danish.
Her fantastic plot structures and spectacular life have attracted numerous filmmakers, from Orson Welles to Sydney Pollak.
Karen Blixen wrote in English and made her debut in 1934 in USA with Seven Gothic Tales under the pseudonym "Isak Dinesen". When the book was published in Denmark the year after the reviews span from "ingenious" to "perverse". She also wrote the novel "Ways of Vengeance" under the alias Pierre Andrezel. All her life Karen Blixen was both as a person and author a provocative, controversial figure in Danish culture.

Åbningsnovellen Vejene omkring Pisa foregår "i maj 1821".

Karen Blixen Cultural Trust Unmasking her Africa The Karen Blixen Cultural Trust was founded in Nairobi, Kenya in 2001, with the aim of informing the world about the life of Karen Blixen (aka Isak Dinesen), the renowned Danish writer who lived in Africa from 1914 to 1931.
Karen Blixen Cultural Trust is a non-profit organization funded through private donations, as well as grants from institutions, foundations, and other well-wishers. In addition to implementing new projects, programs and informative services related to Karen Blixen`s life in Africa, it also seeks to complement the excellent work done by the Karen Blixen Museum in Nairobi.
So much has been written, recorded and reported about Karen Blixen's life in general, however, this is th first time that specific focus has been placed on her African experiences in detail. The driving force behind the formation of the Karen Blixen Cultural Trust is Ms. Tove Hussein, Danish born author of the much-acclaimed illustrated print documentary, Africa's Song of Karen Blixen (1998), covering the lives of many Africans who knew Karen Blixen during her life in Kenya, and her tremendous impact on them. Ms. Hussein connects researchers and admirers of Karen Blixen to the part of her life that took place in Africa, where Tove lives daily in the very environments which Karen Blixen immortalized in her works. As a founder member of the Karen Blixen Museum in Nairobi, Ms. Hussein has witnessed the great interest, both locally and abroad, expressed by thousands of visitors who come each year to see the people and country which inspired the great writer.

A NEW LOOK

  • Introduction Mercury vs arsenic poisoning Karen Blixen's medicines
  • Introduction
The high-profile tour did not conceal that the author was ill. She spent part of her three months in the United States on intravenous infusions. At this time of her life, three years before her death, she weighed less than eighty pounds and ate almost nothing. Her hosts offered oysters, grapes, and champagnefoods she could keep downbut even these she ignored in favor of entertaining the assembled guests. Through a variety of hints, confidences, and declarations, she told intimates that she suffered from syphilis. Karen Blixen does not mention her illness in her lyrical memoir Out of Africa . Her book offers her impressions of Africa and the friends she made therenot insights into her private life. Denys Finch Hatton is a friend, not her lover, in her story. Karen Blixen went to Africa to marry her second cousin Bror Blixen and gain the title of Baroness. Her husband was generous with his affections, and his infidelities resulted in her syphilis in their first year of marriage. Bror Blixen recovered without medications, but Karen Blixen's more serious symptoms required that she take mercury and arsenicthe only medicines used to treat the disease at that time. Despite complications, she persevered with her life in Kenya. Years later she developed unusual abdominal pain, which she feared was caused by tabes dorsalis, late syphilis of the spine.
