ALGERNON BLACKWOOD

Algernon Blackwood
Algernon Blackwood was born 14 March 1869 in London, England, and died 10 December 1951. He was a prolific short story writer and member of the Golden Dawn. His stories deal intensively with supernatural incidents, treating such phenomena as concrete realities experienced by everyday folk. The world of magick and the mysterious is just a thread away from our own... Author's Preface - Written by Algernon Blackwood to introduce a reprint of a collection of his short stories. Includes references to the real life incidents that inspired some of those tales. STORIES ON-LINE BY BLACKWOOD:

Algernon Blackwood
Algernon Henry Blackwood was born in Shooter's Hill, Kent, on March 14, 1869. He was the son of the dowager Duchess of Manchester and her second husband, Sir Stevenson Arthur Blackwood, a clerk in the Treasury and later Secretary of the Post Office. In his youth, Algernon was at the receiving end of his father's strict Evangelism, but showed signs of rebellion by reading the Bhagavad Gita , the Vedanta , the Yoga of Patanjali After a summer he most likely enjoyed very much spent in the Canadian backwoods, he went to New York. The stays in Canada agreed with him a lot, as can be seen in the story "The Wendigo". In New York, he became a reporter for the Evening Sun . Here he became acquainted with Arthur Bigge, who appears disguised as Boyde in Blackwood's autobiography Episodes before Thirty . As Blackwood's roommate, Bigge stole much of his money, causing Blackwood to track him down and have him arrested. Blackwood's life in New York was wretched; he had little or no money most of the time, was frequently sick, surrounded by con men, thugs, pimps and drug addicts, cynical drunken reporters, corrupt policemen and other unpleasant elements. He posed as a model for Charles Dana Gibson, who was a friend of Robert W. Chambers

Algernon Blackwood
E nglish writer of ghost stories and supernatural fiction, of whom Lovecraft wrote: "He is the one absolute and unquestioned master of weird atmosphere." His powerful story "The Willows," which effectively describes another dimension impinging upon our own, was reckoned by Lovecraft to be not only "foremost of all" Blackwood's tales but the best "weird tale" of all time. (Unfortunately, Blackwood, who was familiar with Lovecraft's work, failed to return the compliment. As he told Peter Penzoldt, he found the element of "spiritual terror" missing in his young admirer's writing, while it was all-important in his own.) Among his many works, Blackwood wrote a series of stories and short novels featuring John Silence, a "physician extraordinary" or psychic detective. He also wrote light fantasy and children's books, but best remembered for his ghost stories. The son of a preacher, Blackwood was always interested in the supernatural, the occult, and spiritualism, and was a firm believer in higher powers of man. Episodes Before Thirty (1923) tells of his lean years as a journalist in New York. In the late 1940s Blackwood had a television program on the BBC on which he read . . . ghost stories!

THE GOBLIN'S COLLECTION
by Algernon Blackwood
“I rang,” said Dutton, resenting it a little, “to ask you if you could get me a collar stud - for this evening. Anything will do.” He did not say he had lost his own. Someone, he felt, who was listening, would chuckle and be pleased. It was an absurd position. “And will it be a shtud like this, sorr, that yez wanting?” asked the boy, picking up the lost object from inside the collar on the marble slab. “Like that, yes,” stammered the other, utterly amazed. He had overlooked it, of course, yet it was in the identical place where he had left it. He felt mortified and foolish. It was so obvious that the boy grasped the situation - more, had expected it. It was as if the stud had been taken and replaced deliberately. “Thank you,” he added, turning away to hide his face as the lad backed out - with a grin, he imagined, though he did not see it. Almost immediately, it seemed, then he was back again, holding out a little cardboard box containing an assortment of ugly bone studs. Dutton felt as if the whole thing had been prepared beforehand. How foolish it was! Yet behind it lay something real and true and - utterly incredible! “They won’t get taken, sorr,” he heard the lad say from the doorway. “They’re not nearly bright enough.”

"T HERE'S a hextraordinary gentleman to see you, sir," said the new man. "Why 'extraordinary'?" asked Dr. Silence, drawing the tips of his thin fingers through his brown beard. His eyes twinkled pleasantly. "Why 'extraordinary,' Barker?" he repeated encouragingly, noticing the perplexed expression in the man's eyes. "He's soso thin, sir. I could hardly see 'im at allat first. He was inside the house before I could ask the name," he added, remembering strict orders. "And who brought him here?" "He come alone, sir, in a closed cab. He pushed by me before I could say a word making no noise not what I could hear. He seemed to move very soft" The man stopped short with obvious embarrassment, as though he had already said enough to jeopardise his new situation, but trying hard to show that he remembered the instructions and warnings he had received with regard to the admission of strangers not properly accredited. "And where is the gentleman now?" asked Dr. Silence, turning away to conceal his amusement.
