Henry Bellamann, 1882-1945 Dr. Henry Bellamann
"The green distances of the land were gashed and scarred with wandering roads lumpy and deep-rutted from the heavy wheels that had groaned and strained through the winter mud. These roads came from the outlying regions, springing up, like casual streams, marking themselves more and more deeply in the soil as they moved between rail fences, widening as they wound toward the county seat. Scattered in their beginnings, they drew nearer to each other, converged and straightened as they approached the town." (from Kings Row , the opening lines)
In my travels around the 'net, I've discovered that there is no Web page devoted to the Missouri novelist Henry Bellamann, author of King's Row (1940). Since I wrote my Master's thesis on that novel, I feel duty-bound to make sure that Bellamann gets his place in cyber-space.
This project was begun on August 12, 1998. Today is November 19, 1998, and I think that it really is getting into some shape, especially with the very welcome graphic and text contributions from Dr. Harry Bayne. If you share an interest in Henry Bellamann, I'd love to hear from you. Comments and suggestions about the page are very welcome. E-mail me at LRampey@panix.com

A Brief Biographical Sketch of Henry Bellamann
A native of Fulton, Missouri, Heinrich Hauer Bellamann was born on April 28, 1882. He was a serious student of music and studied both in this country and abroad. From 1907 until 1932, when he began to pursue writing full-time, Bellamann held administrative and teaching positions at several educational institutions including Julliard and Vassar. During these years, Bellamann wrote poetry and published three volumes: A Music Teacher's Notebook Cups of Illusion (1923), and The Upward Pass (1928). Although his poetry is today even less well known than his fiction, Bellamann is recognized by David Perkins in his 1976 History of Modern Poetry in which he ranks Bellamann with the serious minor poets who "adopted the mode" of the Imagists (p. 347).
In 1942 Publishers' Weekly inaccurately reported that Bellamann was an author "new to the book trade" prior to the publication of Kings Row in 1940 (143:244). However, in addition ot the three volumes of poetry already mentioned, four of Bellamann's novels were published before Kings Row . Furthermore, the range of sub-genre in which Bellamann experimented is quite surprising. In addition to

Henry Bellamann: The Columbia, SC, Years at Chicora College
by Harry Bayne, Ph.D.
(Associate Professor of English, Brewton-Parker College, Mt. Vernon, GA)

In his final year at Chicora, Bellamann was tapped by R. Charlton Wright, editor of The Columbia Record , to edit its fine arts section on Sundays. (In those days both The State and The Record published Sunday editions.) Bellamann accepted the offer, serving The Record from 1923 until 1929. In the latter year, Wright lost his job at The Record , and Bellamann resigned in protest. Almost immediately The State requested Bellamann's services in a similar position, and he seized the opportunity. His literary editorship at The State ended in 1932, for reasons I have been unable to learn. In 1934 he resumed his column "The Literary Highway" in The Charlotte Observer but finally abandoned that weekly undertaking in 1937 (some of his last columns in The Observer were authored by someone else). Needless to say, all of his columns after 1924 were written in New York and mailed in; he never failed to close a column without providing his NYC address. To the best of my knowledge, he last visited Columbia in 1930; he came to attend some alumnae functions as Chicora was shutting down. I have no doubt that he was very fond of the city and its cultural life. He was a "regular" at Gittman's Book Store on Main Street, where he met every week for coffee with Columbia's intellectual community (mostly USC professors such as Yates Snowden). It was through his distinguised work at Chicora that he attracted the attention of Juilliard's administration, and enabled him to move to New York, where he made invaluable contacts in the publishing world. Eventually he gave up music altogether. When he failed to interest

18. City Of Fulton: History
The Fulton area owns national acclaim thanks to a novel written by Fultonnative henry bellamann. henry bellamann was born in Fulton in 1882.
http://fulton.missouri.org/FultonCityHistory.htm
The City of Fulton, History Proudly Serving You! H istorians believe that Callaway County existed long before the records document activity about the area. The first settlement in the county was 1808 at Cote Sans Dessein along the Missouri River. Early leaders considered the Territory between Wainwright and Tebetts for the First Missouri State Capital. Callaway County was organized in 1830 and was named after Captain James Callaway who was killed by Indians. Elizabeth became the county seat. Many of the villages and towns in the county today represent places where railroad stations existed in early years.
In 1861, leaders answered the call to defend Callaway County when word arrived that Union troops had advanced to a nearby county. Colonel Jefferson F. Jones, from eastern Callaway County, assembled troops to protect the county. Forces were limited as many were already defending the country, but Jones marched the troops eastward to meet the approaching companies.
The successful defense strictly was illusion. Tree logs, erected by the troops, resembled artillery in the shadows of campfires and deterred Union troops. Talks continued several days and secured a mutual cease attack agreement between the United Sates of America and Callaway County. Elated from the successful defense, citizens proclaimed their county The Kingdom of Callaway, a reference that remains today.
