Peter S. Beagle
Peter Soyer Beagle, amerikanischer Schriftsteller, geb.

    Quotes by Peter S. Beagle
He was not without philosophy, this shopkeeper, and he knew that if a raven comes into your delicatessen and steals a whole baloney it is either an act of God or it isn't, and in either case there isn't very much you can do about it.
A Fine and Private Place He knew very well that the great majority of human conversation is meaningless. A man can get through most of his days on stock answers to stock questions, he thought. Once he catches onto the game, he can manage with an assortment of grunts. This would not be so if people listened to each other, but they don't.
A Fine and Private Place The unicorn lived in a lilac wood, and she lived all alone. She was very old, though she did not know it, and she was no longer the careless color of sea foam, but rather the color of snow falling on a moonlit night. But her eyes were still clear and unwearied, and she still moved like a shadow on the sea.
The Last Unicorn Generation after generation, wolves and rabbits alike they hunted and loved and had children and died, and as the unicorn did none of these things, she never grew tired of watching them.
The Last Unicorn You know better than to expect a butterfly to know your name. All they know are songs and poetry, and anything else they hear. They mean well, but they can't seem to keep things straight. And why should they? They die so soon.

The years between 12 and 19 do not pass easily. Some children mature gracefully from child to adult. Others need to be dragged in kicking and screaming through the process. Jennifer Gluckstein definitely falls into the latter category. The spoiled and rebellious daughter of divorced parents, Jenny suddenly finds herself moving to England to live with her mother and a new extended family in rural Dorset. For a New York City kid, this can be compared to being stranded on the moon. Instead of the hustle and bustle of big city traffic and stores conveniently located on every corner, Jenny must contend with a dilapidated, rambling old house, lots of farmland and other things . Things with red eyes that hide in her closet or under her bed and chirp nasty little whispery giggles just as she's trying to fall asleep. The things don't only hide under her bed. They also infest the rest of the house and roam around outside. Pookas, oakmen, boggarts New York never sported anything like

    67. Peter S Beagle: Tamsin - An Infinity Plus Review
peter S beagle seems to have been taking it easy Tamsin by peter S beagle(ROC, $21.95, 275 pages, hardcover; published October 1999.)
    http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/nonfiction/tamsin.htm
    Tamsin by Peter S Beagle
(ROC, $21.95, 275 pages, hardcover; published October 1999.) In writing Tamsin , only his eighth fiction title since 1960 but his fifth to appear in the 1990s, Peter S Beagle seems to have been taking it easy. After the intense ensembles of High Fantasy voices on display in The Innkeeper's Song (1993) and its companion collection Giant Bones Tamsin is a step down: a Young Adult novel, narrated by a teenage girl, predictable in its rite-of-passage strategies and its sentimentalization of the past. But Beagle's greatest gift, his mastery of the language and atmosphere and resonance with the real of the otherworldly, does emerge in rich measure after an initial unwise hesitancy; Tamsin has some mettle after all. But this is not evident early on. The action starts in New York, where Jenny Gluckstein, a stereotypically feisty, rebellious, pot-smoking (and etcetera) thirteen-year-old, lives with her divorced mother, whom she understands too little, and her pet, Mister Cat, whom she understands too well (too saccharinely well for the taste of this reader, anyway). She wheedles and gossips and whinges through several chapters before the scene shifts to Stourhead Farm in Dorset, an exhausted enterprise whose profitability Jenny's new English stepfather, Evan, is charged with restoring. In the old manor house, hauntings immediately begin, and as they infect the text with mystery, they also lift Jenny out of herself, an elevation devoutly to be wished.

    The Unicorn Sonata
    by Peter S. Beagle, 1996
Review by Eva Wojcik-Obert While The Unicorn Sonata is not The Last Unicorn, it should not disappoint Peter S. Beagle's fans who admire his ability to paint gorgeous mental pictures with words. Beagle's heroine is a young girl with a talent for music and imagination rather than schoolwork. Unlike Zrudlo's Camellia the Bald's cast, Beagle's characters enter the land of fantasy and encounter more than the need for self preservation. There's a mystery afoot in the land of unicorns, and Joey is attuned to it from the very start. In other words, Beagle does not offer escapism simply for its own sake, his story has a few messages tucked into it. While indeed Joey explores and enjoys the moveable land of Shei'rah, Joey does not romp through Shei'rah just for the pleasure of it and pop out again a bundle of fulfilled joy like Susan Camellia. The Unicorn Sonata isn't a children's fantasy primer, despite its youthful heroine. Joey's fellow human adventurers in the ways of the mind and heart include an elderly Greek music shop owner, John Papas, and her irrepressible Abuelita/Grandmother. Beagle imbues

A book review by Elisabeth Carey
I remember being an adolescent girl. That seems normal enough, because I was one for several years. It's a bit scarier that Peter Beagle seems to remember being an adolescent girl. Jenny Gluckstein is thirteen years old, and living with her divorced mother, a music teacher in New York, and visiting regularly with her father, an opera singer. She's a bit of a misfit at school, which most adolescents are, but she has two friends she spends a lot of time with, and she has a cat, Mister Cat. And then her mother announces she's marrying her boyfriend, Evan McHugh, and that she and Jenny are moving to England with him. She'll be leaving her friends, her life, and Mister Cat will spend six months in quarantine. But her new stepbrothers, Tony and Julian, aren't too bad. Also, at least she'll be living in London, and she'll like London. Except that Evan gets a new job, managing a farm in Dorset. And the house they'll be living in turns out to be barely habitable. Jenny's a real pill through all this, and she knows it, and it's mostly intentional. She does eventually meet a girl at school, Meena Chari, whose efforts at friendship she cannot defeat, and eventually the six months are over and she gets Mister Cat back, and things get a little better.

Peter S. Beagle, A Dance For Emilia (ROC, 2000) This book is misleading on all fronts: its diminutive size, the somewhat upset-looking ginger tabby on the cover, even the title, but never has a book held such depth. At least, not for me. The subject matter hits close to home perhaps because I lost a number of friends before the age of twenty. One very close one was walking down the street when a .22 bullet somehow entered her head. This was back in the late '70's so sniping incidents were particularly unheard of in my part of the world. A beauty and grace, snuffed out before it really had a chance to bloom. Peter has written a tale of reality. True reality, the one which is filled with both joy and anguish. But, in order to make it so that the human psyche can deal with it and perhaps even to aid in the healing of such grievous wounds as only reality can make, there is a surge of fantasy spilling into our real world. This is something we have all dealt with at one time or another. Who among us has not had a dream, and abandoned it along the way, only to later come across it once more and decide to strive for the golden ring on the merry-go-round of life. Who among us has not loved and lost a dear friend? Death walks among us each and every day, but doesn't always touch someone near and dear to our hearts. Peter also deals with the hardest lesson in life to learn, that of letting go, continuing on in your life, even when you feel like you can't, when all around is darkness and there is no desire to leave that comforting dark.

    http://www.greenmanreview.com/innkeepersong.html
Peter S. Beagle, The InnKeeper's Song (Roc, 1993) As is expected from Peter, this is a classic fantasy work and a Locus Award Winner. It is a touching tale which covers many life experiences. When Tikat loses his love to the river, he mourns her loss as none but a future husband could, especially when her body cannot be found. When he witnesses her resurrection from the river at the hands of a cloaked woman, then observes their sudden departure, Tikat follows them as best he may. The two women end up being three, all of whom are attempting to undertake a quest of impossible odds. To save their beloved mentor from a fate worse than death will take all of their strength and courage. And although Tikat follows, he can never quite catch them, not until they stop at the Gaff and Slasher Inn. Although the Innkeeper wants nothing to do with the women, he finds himself allowing them to stay, and they find an unlooked-for ally in the stable boy, Rosseth. As if that weren't trouble enough, he then allows their mentor to stay, a once powerful wizard, dying at the hands of the one who is to inherit his magic. And as we all know, wizards always mean a great deal of trouble. Lal, Lakussa, and Nyaterneri all have their secrets and hidden pieces of their pasts, yet they find themselves linked tightly together in an endeavour which could only be destiny. They find themselves accepting the help and friendship of the stable boy. Much to the Innkeeper's dismay, young Rosseth is quite smitten with all three of the women, and follows them about like an overly eager puppy, willing to please in any way he can.
