Frederick Barthelme is a member of The Red Krayola The stuff is just wonderful: crazy, cheesy, funny and wonderful voices. "Cut It Out," "Our Hurricane," "Is That the Same Moon?" "Anyway," "As You Turn To Go," "Pearl Necklace," and "Virginia Reel Around the Fountain" are some faves. I mean, it's all greatness. Maybe I'm nuts, but it seems infectiousa balance of naive, ironic, nasty, bad playing, good playing, good/bad singing... Great stuff, congrats. Very current. When I heard "Zamfir was right when he panned through the night, when he tried to find gold for his lady..." I thought, This is sublime. (29 Jan 1999) Love and Letters Music

This is a directory of published writers of mainstream literary poetry and fiction living and working in Nebraska, or having strong ties to the state. It contains biographical material, selections from published work, lists of publications, a survey of commentary on the writer, and more. To be included in the directory of Nebraska writers, a poet or fiction writer must have published a book or at least three poems or stories (or a combination) with a legitimate (i.e., not a vanity) press or magazine. Unfortunately, time and space limitations prevent the inclusion of writers of genre fiction (romance, mystery, science fiction, etc.). Readers, publishers, sponsors of readings, etc. are encouraged to contact the writers or to email me ( spencr@creighton.edu

An e-mail exchange
To: Ralph Lombreglia From: Frederick Barthelme Subject: Literary Publishing on the Web RL: Could you say how you view the Web and its literary prospects? FB:
There seem to be two basic views of the Web among literary folk. The first and most common is that the Web is a wasteland, another television, a form of advertising all utterly unsuitable for literary activity. Among these folk there is a curious parallel between response to the Web and response to alternative literatures. Those who are terrorized by any change in the habits, practices, and product of writers, any change that might tend to disenfranchise them, are also, and perhaps not surprisingly, terrorized by the rise of the Web as a publishing forum. The second common view is the giddy "it's all experimental" approach that proclaims that anything on the Web is a fabulous extension of literary activity as we have known it and will clearly destroy all not up-to-date literary activity in about twenty minutes. Both these views are, even in their most sophisticated disguises, silly.

To hell and back, via Paradise, in frederick barthelme's new novel.
http://www.weeklywire.com/ww/11-03-97/memphis_book.html
You Bet Your Life
By Leonard Gill The next time you're minding your own business mindlessly feeding the quarter slots, kindly consider for a moment Raymond and Jewel Kaiser, residents of that "outlet-mall version of Las Vegas" known as Biloxi, Mississippi. Ray's a disenchanted architect in no hurry to resume work. Jewel, the bread-winner, is self-employed at what is fuzzily described as a "consulting" job. RV, who whines, drinks, smokes pot, hangs out in parking lots, and represents today's typical 14-year-old, is Jewel's wise-cracking daughter by a previous marriage. Raymond's mother, Leona, lives alone in Bay St. Louis fixating on the John Larroquette look-alike next door. And his retired father back in Houston, "a sad old guy, messy ... a hard case," complains of raw testicles from sitting around so much. The Kaisers, needless to say, will not be serving as billboard material for the casino industry. But they do serve as a perfect pair playing off one another comically and tragically and against the odds in Frederick Barthelme's latest novel, Bob the Gambler . How did Ray and Jewel Kaiser, an attractive couple, a smart couple who should know better, get themselves in such a fix?

16. Frederick Barthelme: Casas De Aluminio
Casas de aluminio. frederick barthelme. Te detienes junto a la pared.
http://www.barcelonareview.com/22/s_fb2.htm

The harsh beauty of Nevada, the glitzy pleasures of Vegas and the thrill ride of gambling.
By Jeff Stark Writer beware Publishing that first novel often brings more terrors than thrills. By Samantha Gillison Dear Mr. Blue An affair to forget By Garrison Keillor Reviews "The Unburied" by Charles Palliser Half Victorian mystery, half contemporary psychological thriller, this is a tale of murders in several centuries. By Adam Kirsch From he-man to holy-man By Elaine Showalter Complete archives for Books Games people play "Double Down" authors Frederick and Steven Barthelme talk about family, gambling and their run-in with the legal system. By Jim Hanas Dec. 1, 1999 O n Nov. 11, 1996, Frederick and Steven Barthelme brothers, authors, college professors were told to pick up their chips at the Grand Casino in Gulfport, Miss., and "Come with us." Despite substantial losses they'd lost $10,000 at the Grand's blackjack tables that night casino security suspected the pair were cheating. A year later, they found themselves under indictment for allegedly conspiring with a dealer, who, the theory went, had sent signals to the brothers about what cards she was holding. Over three years, the brothers Barthelme dropped more than a quarter of a million dollars in the slot machines and on the blackjack tables along Mississippi's Gulf Coast. Most of that money came from an inheritance the two received after their mother and father passed away in quick succession less than a decade after the death of their eldest brother, experimental author Donald Barthelme. But if it was grief that led the brothers to high-stakes gambling, it was gambling that eventually brought them to grief with the legal system as widely publicized criminal charges loomed over them for nearly two years.
