An Ugly Story in a Beautiful Setting- Crossing Into Broken Conventions With Isaac Babel In the world of literature, beautiful imagery and tranquil settings normally accompany an equally tranquil and beautiful story. Nowhere in this idyllic environment would it seem appropriate to include descriptions of bloodshed, violent confrontation, or, worst of all, death. In accordance with this idea, too, is the generally accepted nature of an appropriate character; uncommon in a serene setting would be examples of such ugly, hateful characters as liars, murders, and individuals harboring violent emotions. Simply put, readers bare the expectation that characters match their background. Thus, instead of being base and detestable specimens of the human race, the usual characters of a beautiful story are instead endowed with the grace and virtue best befitting a heroine in a Disney fairytale. Perhaps the most apparent break from literary norms can be seen in the first paragraph of this story. As described by the narrator of "Crossing Into Poland," for instance, the Polish setting was a place of great beauty:

Works of Soviet Literature summarized for those unable or too lazy to read them in the original. THE DEATH OF DOLGUSHOV
by Isaac Babel
(Complete Translated Text) The curtains of battle were moving toward the city. At noon, Korochaev, in a black cloak, the disgraced commander of the fourth division, fighting alone and seeking out death, flew past us. On the run he shouted to me:
"Our communications links are broken! Radziwillow and Brody are in flames!"
And he galloped off, fluttering, all black, with eyes like coal.
On the plain, flat as a board, the brigades were repositioning themselves. The sun was rolling along in the crimson dust. The wounded, in ditches, were snacking. Nurses were lying on the grass and singing quietly. Afonka's scouts were roaming the field, searching out the dead and uniforms. Afonka passed by within two feet of me. Without turning his head he said:
"They smacked us right in the face. Ain't no doubt about it. They're thinking of changing the divisional commander. The soldiers don't trust him."
The Poles came up to the forest three versts from us and set up their machine guns nearby. Bullets whine and scream. Their lament grows unendurably. Bullets wound the earth and dig into it, trembling with impatience. Vytyagaichenko, commander of the regiment, snoring in the sunshine, cried out in his sleep and woke up. He got on his horse and rode off to the lead squadron. His face was crumpled, in red streaks after his uncomfortable sleep, and his pockets were full of plums.

Kiev::Citizens:: Isaac Babel Babel was born in the Jewish ghetto of Odessa, Ukraine. Most of his early years he spent in the Black Sea port Nikolaev. The atmosphere of the persecution of Jews is reflected in the pessimism of his stories, although his childhood was relatively comfortable. At a time when most Jews were forbidden to live in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kiev, and other localities, Odessa had many times more Jews than any other city in the Russian part of the empire. Babel's father was a succesful businessman who installed his family in one of the best streets in Odessa. Babel studied violin, German, French and Talmud at the Nicholas I Commercial Institute (1905-11) and wrote stories at the age of fifteen in imitation of Guy de Maupassant. In 1915 Babel graduated from Kiev University which had been evacuated to Saratov on the Volga because of the war. After graduating Babel moved to St. Petersburg, where he studied literature. In that capital city "traitors, malcontents, whiners, and Jews" were banned and Babel had to use an apocryphal passport. His first works were published in 1916 in Letopis , a monthly edited by Maksim Gorky . Babel's early satires of the Czarist bureaucracy attracted the attention of the government and Babel was accused of pornography and incitement of class hatred. On Gorky's advise Babel decided to see the world and learn about life. He participated briefly in the war on the Romanian front. He was injured and after his discharge Babel joined the staff of Gorky's newspaper

© eMe Textos:

Koret Jewish Book Award winners include Isaac Babel
"Let me finish my work," declared Russian writer Isaac Babel. Arrested by Stalin at a time when so many of the talented writers in Soviet Russia met a similar fate, he was investigated, interrogated and forced to sign statements he knew were lies. Then he was executed. The author's writings, edited by Nathalie Babel, his daughter, will receive the fiction prize in the fourth annual Koret Jewish Book Awards. "The Complete Works of Isaac Babel" contains his candid, often excruciatingly vivid diaries, plays, screenplays and stories, translated by Peter Constantine. In addition, a special award for literature will honor the work of the late W. G. Sebald, a German novelist widely acclaimed for his lyric explorations of the Holocaust and the nature of memory. Sebald, who died in England last year, wrote a series of dense, profound books laced with Jewish themes that were part memoir, part travelogue and part fiction. "Of particular significance, 'Austerlitz' is an extraordinary evocation of the last century's greatest trauma," says Stanford Professor Steven J. Zipperstein, who chairs the Koret Jewish Book Awards' advisory board. The awards are given by the San Francisco-based Koret Foundation in cooperation with the National Foundation for Jewish Culture in New York.
