Artificial Neural Networks, Database Management
My research concerns adaptive logic networks (ALNs) and their applications. An ALN can fit a function to given data points by a process of training. For example, it can learn to predict a future value of some variable based on past values of that variable and other variables related to it. In contrast to other neural networks, ALNs allow a user to place constraints on the learned function, e.g., it can be forced to be convex or to be increasing in a certain variable. This allows an expert to use qualitative knowledge to guide training. ALNs are useful in data analysis, pattern recognition and control. They have been used to try to predict when machines were about to break down, to recognize images of characters in noise, and to control functional electrical stimulation for a walking prosthesis in a case of spinal-cord injury. Data analysis applications are very important in business planning, for example, in activities like marketing. More information is available via my home page.

Thermal Magneto-Visco-Elastic Theory Based Development of High Temperature Polymer Composite Acoustic Transducer Materials
William Armstrong (2001-present) Abstract The proposed effort will develop improved composite transducer materials by providing a theoretical and experimental understanding of thermal magneto-visco-elastic processes in terfenol-D particle and long fiber composite materials. We are specifically interested in developing improved modeling descriptions of the coupling between composite internal stress and magnetostriction and the technical description of heat generation mechanisms operating in high power solid state transducers. Our primary goal is to develop a complete thermal magneto-visco-elastic theory of these materials, and implement this theory in a commercial FEM package in order to facilitate rapid, accurate design of high power solid state naval acoustic emitters.

ARMSTRONG, WILLIAM H.
September 14, 1914-
Author Autobiographical sketch written for the Third Book of Junior Authors, 1972: In taking a measurement of my life I find a paradox which is probably responsible for the fact that my writing has been described as being "for all ages." Born on a farm near Lexington, Virginia, in that most beautiful Shenandoah valley, I walked with history where General Lee had walked, and went to Sunday School in a Presbyterian Church where "Stonewall" Jackson had taught. It was in this Sunday School that I was moved from the world of my contemporaries into the adult world. At the age of twelve I listened while the Sunday School teacher opened all the stops in telling the story of Jesus, the carpenter of Nazareth, driving the demons out of the possessed persons and into the Gadarene swine. When the swine ran down the hill and perished in the lake, it was too much for a farm boy, so I asked: "What about the poor man who owned the swine? Who paid for his loss?" In a stern Scotch Presbyterian household, where God and discipline were real and working, and for which I am daily grateful even now, it was decided that I would be moved into the Men's Bible Class where I would not annoy the teacher. This was my entrance into the adult world, and here and later in school and college I found my friends among older people. After college I began to teach thirteen- and fourteen-year-olds and have spent my life with them.
