Rae Armantrout
Rae Armantrout has published two books: Extremities (The Figures, 1978), and The Invention of Hunger (Tuumba, 1979). "Fiction" is a reprint from the second. A new book, Precedence, is forthcoming from Burning Deck early in 1985. A review of Extremities, by Susan Howe, recently appeared in The L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E Book (Southern Illinois Press, 1984). WORKING NOTES FROM RAE ARMANTROUT:
Generally it takes me quite a while to write even a short poem. A month might be average. Language begins to accrete around an initially vague impression. The process of turning the gathered material into a "poem" is usually one of seeing potential connections between the previously discrete lines or sections. However, "Through Walls," a relatively long poem for me, was written continuously in the space of a rather charged hour and a half. I wish I could do that more often. go to Through Walls or Fiction

About Veil: New and Selected Poems
Robert Creeley
"These poems seem to hang poised, one by one, at a threshold... Each poem queries and glimmers and above all refracts light in some miraculous way, so that the eye meeting the page is dazzled. There is something like a reflective fire surrounding each poem like a little wire aura. I am moved and amazed."

POETS ON POETRY
: Daniel Kane interviews poets about their poems, their poetics, and their ideas on how to teach poetry to students in grades K-12. This month, Daniel and poet Rae Armantrout talk about prose-poetry and the trials, tribulations, and ultimate joy in teaching so-called "avant-garde" writing.

Rae Armantrout's Poem
The image you'll see below is that of the poet RAE ARMANTROUT. Rae, who lives and teaches in San Diego, California, is recognized internationally as one of the most original poets of the last decade. Her work has been included in the anthologies Best American Poetry of 1988 and "Language Poetries I took this picture of Rae in her office at the University of California in San Diego, where she had just finished talking about line-breaks with one of her students. I thought it would be good to put some of Rae's poems on-line and talk to Rae about them especially in terms of how one could teach the poems to people of high-school age. So, read the poems, and then read a transcript of the conversation Rae and I had. Hopefully all you writers and teachers out there can bring these poems into your classrooms and share them with your students. You can find the following poems in Rae's book Necromance
WAKE UP (back to top)
Imagine that dorm kid's confusion when I'm yelling from the closet, "It's Jeff's dad; let me out." * I get up. Our dead cat's standing by the door. I pull off some gray threads of fur to convince Chuck something's wrong, but what I show him looks like limp grain. Like wild oats? * We get up to investigate. In the kitchen we catch a fake repairman. "I just came to see if you've figured it out," he lies. "And have I?" I'm yelling, really indignant.

nowhere and landed itself and its maker somewhere * Evans, Steve. "The Dynamics of Literary Change: Four Excursuses in Lieu of a Lecture " The Impercipient Lecture Series . Vol. 1, No. 1. February 1997. I open with this statement of Steve Evans's, quoting from composer Morton Feldman, not so much to sound a note of warning here (as if any such history that this somewhere implies might ever be avoided!), but simply to state that the apparatus of criticism - as one of the ushers into this curious place that is not the artist's own - need not pose quite the threat that it sometimes seems to. Evans, for his part, is speaking simply of publication: the moment in which a work - or, in which work itself - is made available to a public beyond the arm's length stretch of "elective affinities." And his account is right, as it is perhaps a strange somewhere that awaits the publishing writer, or the writer who is worthy, in anyone's eyes, of more attention than she has received, and who thus becomes the subject of a volume of critical essays.
In this case, lucky for all of us, the writer is worthy indeed. Rae Armantrout is the author of seven published books:
