T here's a scene in the new Merchant-Ivory film, Surviving Picasso, Surviving Picasso is based: Arianna Stassinopoulous Huffington's Picasso: Creator and Destroyer. Prior to the book's publication, an excerpt, also titled "Picasso: Creator and Destroyer," appeared in the June, 1988, issue of the The Atlantic Monthly Huffington's profile reveals an endlessly talented and intensely passionate manipulator who viewed his works not as art but rather, as Huffington put it, as weapons "against every emotion of belonging in creation, against nature, human nature and the God who created it all." Picasso's prolific creativity, Huffington argues, was fueled by his brutal candor and studied indifference to people and to social convention, traits that induced seething frustration in those who worked and lived with him. life. Picasso found in Gilot an intelligent female (forty years younger than he) who did not conform to his stereotypical view of women as either whorish or holy. The attraction was irresistible and the relationship, though at times turbulent, provided him both with creative nourishment and a measure of domestic stability. The opening scenes of Surviving Picasso , which depict Gilot's and Picasso's first meeting in Picasso's expansive Paris studio, closely parallel the opening passages of Gilot's August, 1964, article in The Atlantic , titled "Pablo Picasso's Love: La Femme-Fleur."

The Artist
Pablo Picasso Famous as no artist ever had been, he was a pioneer, a master and a protean monster, with a hand in every art movement of the century BY ROBERT HUGHES o say that Pablo Picasso dominated Western art in the 20th century is, by now, the merest commonplace. Before his 50th birthday, the little Spaniard from Malaga had become the very prototype of the modern artist as public figure. No painter before him had had a mass audience in his own lifetime. The total public for Titian in the 16th century or Velazquez in the 17th was probably no more than a few thousand peoplethough that included most of the crowned heads, nobility and intelligentsia of Europe. Picasso's audiencemeaning people who had heard of him and seen his work, at least in reproductionwas in the tens, possibly hundreds, of millions. He and his work were the subjects of unending analysis, gossip, dislike, adoration and rumor. He was a superstitious, sarcastic man, sometimes rotten to his children, often beastly to his women. He had contempt for women artists. His famous remark about women being "goddesses or doormats" has rendered him odious to feminists, but women tended to walk into both roles open-eyed and eagerly, for his charm was legendary. Whole cultural industries derived from his much mythologized virility. He was the Minotaur in a canvas-and-paper labyrinth of his own construction. Page 2 Page 3 Page 4

Pablo Picasso

Besuch der Kunstschule in Barcelona.
Studium an der Academia San Fernando in Madrid.
Erste Paris-Reise.

The Picasso Conspiracy
English It is a little known fact that the origin of Pablo Picasso's Guernica lies in a secretive drawing that was executed in 1934 and which re-surfaced in England in the 1970's. This previously unknown work contains the widest range of themes of all known Picasso's and has been signed, dated and fingerprinted by the artist. Yet since it's discovery, the Picasso museums and the Picasso Administration under the direction of Claude Picasso have refused access to fingerprinted materials that could prove it genuine. A number of well known scholars close to the Picasso Estate have also been brushing aside or denying the attribution when communicating with the media. Regardless of what they may say, the drawing's authenticity can be proven one way or the other, but this may never happen unless Claude Picasso and those under his influence allow access to fingerprinted items under their control.
