Neither English artists was so succeeded during his life, but he. Whether he was in Pre-Raphaelites' rows or drew sentimental genre pictures or representative portraits the crowd followed him. But it was he, who was called "Fallen Angel of Arts", and there is no analogy of this fall in the history of arts. John Everett Millais was the youngest among the three founders, but he was the most skilful painter. Inspired by the Rossetti's poetic fantasies and Hunt's theories Millais put into practice the Pre- Raphaelite's method of painting, reminding frescoes. Millais's first composition with monogram "PRB" was "Isabella" (1849, Liverpool, Walker Art Gallery). Following Hunt Millais used the bright colours on the wet white ground, he didn't use professional models and tried to be as close as possible in depicting material world. The painting was accepted rather cold. Only next year when he exhibited "Christ in the House of his Parents" (1850, London Tate Gallery) he was found out on the top of the scandal. Like other "brothers" he was blamed for the naturalism of the holy theme, stiffness of colours and sincerity of feelings. In his next works, "Marianna" (1851, Private

A child prodigy (his winning a prize at age nine so incensed older fellow art students that they hung him upside down until he fainted), Millais later figured in one of the biggest Victorian scandals, the annulment for nonconsummation of the marriage of art critic John Ruskin, whose young ex then married Millais. His facility allowed him to become prolific and prosperous, but he had to alter his style from Pre-Raphaelite precisionism to a more painterly manner that makes his portraiture, especially, immediately evident as contemporary to that of Whistler. Forty colorplates appear here, with ample annotations on facing pages; they include the famous Pre-Raphaelite works, Christ in the House of His Parents and Ophelia , and the much later Bubbles , one of the first fine artworks to be exploited by advertising, in its case, by the Pears soap company.

His family was of French descent. In 1838 he attended Henry Sass' Drawing School and the Royal Academy in 1840. While still a youth, he won various medals for his drawings. His first painting was Pizzarro Seizing the Inca of Peru With Rossetti and Hunt, he founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848. The influence of this movement was first discernible in his Isabella of 1849. Ophelia , begun in the summer of 1851 and exhibited the following year at the Royal Academy, markes the culmination of Millais' youthful period. Endowed with a virtuoso technical skill and encouraged by Ruskin, he rapidly outstripped his Brotherhood colleagues and won lasting fame. He was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1863 and served as President in 1896. Millais' works never failed to elicit praise. His remarkable technique lent his canvases a unique distinction, particuarly in his last paintings, long after the exhilaration of the radiant Pre-Raphaelite period had died away. Towards the end of his life, he turned to portraiture. He was also a fine illustrator.

John Everett Millais (1829-1896) Charlie is my Darling A child prodigy in art, John Everett Millais entered the Royal Academy Schools at age 11, and exhibited at the RA from age 17. There he became friends first with Holman Hunt , and afterwards Rossetti , and these three founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848. Millais quickly moved from a mannerist to a realistic style in keeping with the Pre-Raphaelite ideal, and was coached by John Ruskin who took him to Scotland to paint in 1853. Millais produced the most well-known portrait of the famous critic in 1854, and incidentally married the wife of Ruskin after the latter's marriage was annulled. (She was the model for the soldier's wife in The Order of Release Millais's pictures include Cymon and Iphigenia Lorenzo and Isabella , his first Pre-Raphaelite image, The Carpenter's Shop (much derided by Charles Dickens), Ferdinand lured by Ariel Ophelia , with Elizabeth Siddall, later wife of Rossetti, in the title role, and subsequently The Vale of Rest and Autumn Leaves Millais at home He thrived at the Royal Academy, becoming ARA as early as 1853, then RA and finally, in the year of his death

But perhaps the works of his later years by which he will be most remembered are his portraits—especially his three portraits of Gladstone (1879, 1885 and 1890), and those of John Bright, of Lord Tennyson, and of Lord Beaconsfield, which was left unfinished at his death. He also painted the marquess of Salisbury, Lord Rosebery, the dukes of Devonshire and Argyll, Cardinal Newman, Thomas Carlyle, Sir James Paget, Sir Henry Irving, George Grote, Lord Chief Justice Russell, j. C. Hook, R.A., and himself (Uffizi Gallery, Florence). He drew Charles Dickens after his death.
