Rescuing Henry Darger Henry Darger: Art and Selected Writings
By Michael Bonesteel
Rizzoli International Publications, 256 pages, 2000. ISBN 0-8478-2284-2 It's clear that Michael Bonesteel's mission in "Henry Darger: Art and Selected Writings" is to rescue the loner artist of Webster Avenue from his most obvious appeal weirdness. Darger is a major figure in 20th Century American art, and Bonesteel's disciplined introductory essay adds significantly to the well-known scraps of his story while avoiding the overreaching analysis so common to writing on outsiders. His description of Darger's creative methods serves to give him more coherence as an artist, while the account of Darger's one known adult friendship, references to the real life people whose names Darger used in his fiction and similar biographic items add social texture to a life that has seemed obscured in surreal isolation. This approach is opposite that of the typical outsider life story. Rather than sensationalizing the strangeness of Darger's life, Bonesteel, a Chicago-based art critic and member of the Intuit board, manages to make him seem less the isolated other. The biography illuminates the work rather than wrapping it in a romantic eccentricity. Oddity still finds easy resonance with the violence of Darger's most extreme paintings, however, with the misapplied penises on little girls and with the whole vast loneliness of his obsessive artistic enterprise. And the rich illustrations in this volume include a couple of the most bizarre of Darger's set pieces, showing children crucified and, in distressing anatomical detail, gutted.

by E.Tage Larsen This is neither tawny, cobble-road delusion nor rabbit-holed excursion, and there's no moral at the end. Those are the gateways and postscripts which make adventures into the unknown a little more comfortable. They are the tenets of children's book folklore and, unfortunately, there is no clever transition into the otherworld of Outsider Artist Henry Darger; in fact, you aren't even invited. Last winter's Henry Darger retrospective at the Museum of American Folk Art was a monument to the most obsessively perverse act of genius swingin' under the big top. My introduction to Outsider Art was through the virtue and great patience of a collector friend in Salt Lake City, Utah. Outsider Art is a blanket term used to imply unschooled artists whose particular dalliance or psychosis is a catalyst to brilliance. Salt Lake City, under the rule of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-Day Saints, the Mormons, certainly brandishing its own aberrance, attracts a lot of oddball allegiances to counteract the ubiquitous religious fervor. I was surprised at how much of the fringe element stopped through on its way to everywhere else. Having spent the '90s being anywhere but Salt Lake City, I take it as no small irony that my reintroduction to Outsider Art would be in the form of the Henry Darger exhibition at the Museum of American Folk Art, located across from Lincoln Center, on 65th and Columbus, sharing the building with the only New York City ward of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter-Day Saints.

The name "Vivian Sisters" is taken from the work of artist Henry Darger, whose paintings have transfixed Laura...she has found them to be strangely compelling... There are many great websites devoted to this artist, one of our favorites www.saraayers.com talks about his life and work and has some fine examples of his art, as well as links to other Darger sites...

Henry Darger: Outsider Artist ... Song-Poet?
by Phil Milstein Henry Darger, the most important Outsider artist America has ever produced, may also have been a song-poet. Although known primarily for his paintings, Darger was equally consumed with his writings, which included the 12-volume, 15,145-page In The Realms Of The Unreal

Henry Darger
I first saw one of Henry Darger's paintings at a group show at the American Visionary Art Museum and was stunned by the color and composition of the work as well as the heartbreaking story that accompanied it. Since then, I have looked for more of his work and was recently enthralled by "Henry Darger: The Unreality of Being," the first museum retrospective of his work, at the Museum of American Folk Art in New York City. Appreciation of the art of Henry Darger is unequivocally influenced by the known facts of his life: his mother died when he was four years old after giving birth to a baby sister, whom he never saw. When he was eight years old, his father, unable to continue caring for him, put him in anorphanage and died soon after. Diagnosed as a disruptive trouble-maker, he was removed to various mental institutions until he ran away at age 16.
For the next sixty-four years, he lived a reclusive life, working as a janitor in Chicago area hospitals and going to Catholic mass daily. Neighbors would see him going through the trash, picking out magazines and newpaper illustrations. Finally, at age 80, unable to climb the stairs to his room, he was moved to a nursing home and died shortly thereafter.
His landlord was cleaning out his room after his death and came across a startling discovery: alone in his room, Darger had created a beautiful and violent fantasy world, primarily embodied in a 15,000 page epic narrative

William Shakespeare A Midsummer Night's Dream , V,i,7 Henry Darger was certainly no lover. Whether he was the unworldly bard for a world all of his own making, or a retiring, obsessive madman, is still very much open to debate. Raw facts are that Darger was born in 1892, perhaps in Brazil or Germany, and that, perhaps, he originally bore the surname, Dargarius. And when he died in 1972, he left behind a previously unsuspected "picaresque tale in 12 massive volumes composed of 19,000 pages of legal sized paper filled with single-spaced typing entitled The Story of the Vivian Girls, in what is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion

Realms of the Unreal: The Imaginary World of Henry Darger Deborah Markus discusses Darger, Edith Wharton and the Brontë sisters in the June 2002 issue of "The Spook." The Gap ads containing photos of half-naked women provide an interesting counterpoint. Henry Darger: Outsider Artist ... Song-Poet? Phil Milstein, curator of the American Song-Poem Music Archives, presents evidence that Darger may have submitted a composition to a "song-poem" company in 1921. Henry J. Darger: The Homer of the Mad In a very early article (1980), Joseph Jablonski contends that Darger was a "naive surrealist." Thank Heaven for Little Girls Richard Vine's 1998 piece from Art in America may be the most comprehensive online article about Darger. Thoughts on the Question: Why Darger? In this article from The Outsider, Darger scholar John M. MacGregor muses about why he has spent ten years studying Darger, as well as whether or not Darger was a child murderer. A Life of Bizarre Obsession Art critic Robert Hughes discusses Darger's place in the canon and argues that Darger was not a child murderer.
