Weisberg Ballast Quarterly Review , Vol 14 No 1, Autumn 1998 Women, Art, and Society (World of Art) by Whitney Chadwick Of course you've heard of Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Degas, but what about Artemisia Gentileschi, Judith Leyden and Berthe Morisot? If you left college art history classes wondering why women are so often the subject of Western art but so rarely its creators, this book will prove fascinating. In her comprehensive, readable and richly illustrated text, Whitney Chadwick examines not only the works of little-known but extremely gifted women artists, but the strategies by which women have been excluded from the traditional canon of "great artists." She points out numerous instances in which a woman's works have been attributed to her less talented father, lover or simply another, more famous male contemporary. Most importantly, Women, Art and Society

Elisabeth H. Gates Fund, 1927
Although radical in the way she lived her personal life, Bonheur was politically and artistically conservative. She worked in a very traditional way, making sketches and studies in preparation for larger, final paintings. This is an oil study for her most famous painting, The Horse Fair.
The final version of The Horse Fair was shown in Paris in 1853 and received enthusiastically. The work also attained widespread popularity in England, and engravings were made and sold in a number of other countries as well. Rosa Bonheur was the first woman to receive a cross of the Legion of Honor in France, a reward for outstanding achievement in her field. The honor was bestowed upon her personally by the Empress Eugenie, wife of emperor Napoleon III, in June 1865. The empress wanted to show, as she said, that "genius has no sex."
SUGGESTIONS FOR HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES AND DISCUSSIONS
  • Have the children write a story about one of the characters (men or horses) in the painting, including why the character is at the horse fair, how he got there and what will happen after the fair.

Rosa Bonheur French, 1822-1899
The Horse Fair, ca. 1852
Oil on canvas, 10 1/2 x 25"
Elisabeth H. Gates Fund, 1927 Horses were very important when this was painted almost 150 years ago. Since there were no cars, and travel by train was new and somewhat limited, horses were the primary means of transportation. At horse fairs like the one in this painting, horse dealers (like car dealers today) would show off their animals to potential buyers. Which horse would you choose and why? Rosa Bonheur, the artist who painted this, loved horses and other animals. To paint them correctly, she believed you had to see them up close. But she had a problem- in the 1850s it was not acceptable for women to attend an event like a horse fair. When she did, the men made fun of her. So Ms. Bonheur did something very unusual- she decided to wear men's clothing so she wouldn't be noticed. But in order to not be arrested, she asked the police for permission to dress like a man. They granted her request, and she was able to sketch the powerful and beautiful horses at the fair. This painting is a small study (a practice version) of a much larger work also called The Horse Fair.

Rosa Bonheur Women Artists - Whitney Gallery of Western Art Rosa Bonheur (1822-1899). Women rarely received the training necessary to become professional artists. An exception was the French woman Rosa Bonheur who came from a family of artists who supported equal rights for women. Bonheur painted one of the best-known portraits of Buffalo Bill. For her, Buffalo Bill embodied the freedom and independence of the United States. About the Artist A painter of animals as well as a sculptor, Rosa Marie Bonheur was born in Bordeaux, France in 1822. The daughter, and eventual pupil, of Raymond, a painter. Inspired by Georges Sand as a young girl, she dressed as a boy to visit the slaughterhouses to learn animal anatomy. She then began sketching at the horse market on the Boulevard de l'e Hospital in Paris. Her artistic influences included Theodore Gericault and Karl Bodmer. Bonheur achieved worldwide fame by 1855, and counted Queen Victoria among her friends. During the Franco-Prussian war, her studio and home were protected by order of German royalty. In 1892, Buffalo Bill's Wild West visited Paris and Bonheur was caught up in the spirit of the American West, as seen in her portrait of Col. William F. Cody

Thereafter, Rosa submitted both paintings and sculpture, specialising in domestic and agricultural subjects. Where possible, Rosa always worked directly from nature, which gave her work its immediate realism. Indeed, her works are not only masterful studies, but reflect her innate sympathy with nature. In 1856 she visited Scotland and was introduced to Queen Victoria who became one of her patrons. Although a competent sculptor, her vocation was as an artist first and a sculptor second. She produced only fourteen pieces of sculpture in her own lifetime, and of these, the Grazing Ewe was the most commercially successful and popular. Rosa Bonheur
Rosa Bonheur was one of the most renowned animal painters in history. Her earliest training was received from her father, a minor landscape painter, who encouraged her interest in art in general and in animals. He allowed her to keep a menagerie in their home, including a sheep that is reported to have lived on the balcony of their apartment in Paris.
