Celebrated Stanford University historian Clayborne Carson is the director and editor of the Martin Luther King Papers Project; with thousands of King's essays, notes, letters, speeches, and sermons at his disposal, Carson has organized King's writings into a posthumous autobiography. In an early student essay, King prophetically penned: "We cannot have an enlightened democracy with one great group living in ignorance.... We cannot have a nation orderly and sound with one group so ground down and thwarted that it is almost forced into unsocial attitudes and crime." Such statements, made throughout King's career, are skillfully woven together into a coherent narrative of the quest for social justice. The autobiography delves, for example, into the philosophical training King received at Morehouse College, Crozer Theological Seminary, and Boston University, where he consolidated the teachings of Afro-American theologian Benjamin Mays with the philosophies of Locke, Rousseau, Gandhi, and Thoreau. Through King's voice, the reader intimately shares in his trials and triumphs, including the Montgomery Boycott, the 1963 "I Have a Dream Speech," the Selma March, and the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. In one of his last speeches, King reminded his audience that "in the final analysis, God does not judge us by the separate incidents or the separate mistakes that we make, but by the total bent of our lives." Carson's skillful editing has created an original argument in King's favor that draws directly from the source, illuminating the circumstances of King's life without deifying his person. --Eugene Holley Jr. Amazon.com Audiobook Review
By weaving together an unprecedented amount of material, including Dr. King's books, articles, essays, personal letters, and unpublished manuscripts, Clayborne Carson (historian, documentarian, and director of the King Papers Project) has crafted an excellent production that represents the unique medium of audiobooks at its very best. With the effective and engaging narration of actor Levar Burton as a foundation, the tapes provide understanding and insight into this important religious and political leader's powerful convictions. Original music from the civil rights movement, plus rare recordings of Dr. King's moving speeches and sermons, help create an inspiring portrait of one of the most influential leaders of the 20th century. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Radicalism of Martin Luther King, Jr. is Revealed
Martin Luther King, Jr. was a very brave man, an unyielding pacifist---and a radical leftist who greatly damaged the United States. He literally argued that his own country carried out a racist and imperialist war against the Vietnamese. MLK believed in affirmative action programs and socialism. He pushed the myth that right-wing conservatives assassinated John F. Kennedy instead of the committed Communist, Lee Harvey Oswald (Camelot and the Cultural Revolution: How the Assassination of John F. Kennedy Shattered American Liberalism). And no, you don't have to take my word for it.Clayborne Carson has put together the hard evidence.King was also a plagiarist who didn't hesitate to steal other authors' writings.Nonetheless, we know for sure that these essays were at least approved by him. Many people who read MLK's approved texts for the first time will be appalled. This is especially true for those who reject the morally relativistic notion that a few lies on behalf of a noble cause can ever be justified.

There is another book you should read. Theodore Pappas released his own meticulously researched Plagiarism and The Culture War : The Writings of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Other Prominent Americans only a few months earlier than Carson's. It turns out that MLK's PhD was not earned. At best, he was a pseudointellectual. Hard core left-wingers like Stanley Levinson and Andrew Young took full advantage of his shallowness.Americans need to learn the truth about Rev. King. The fact that these two books were published roughly ten years ago is not relevant. You should put them on your must read list for 2008.Truth is always more valuable than even the most well meaning deceptions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really Enjoyed Reading the Book
I really enjoyed reading this book. The style of prose used by Dr. King is very easy to follow and flows very well. The book is also an inspiring example of how civil disobedience can change the world.

I also am glad that he did not sneeze. (If you read the book you will know the context of this statement).

The only reason that I did not give the book a 5 star rating is I thought that the editor could have added an addendum or chapter on the end of the book concerning the assassination of Dr King and how this affected the rest of the Civil Rights movement and the rest of the country as a whole.

But I would definetely recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nothing short of inspiring
I was excited to receive this book for my birthday, as I'd admired Martin Luther King Jr for a few years, but had to admit I didn't know much about him, or exactly what sacrifices he made. Although famous all over the world, he is probably not the first thing on the mind of most white Australian twenty-something females!

Basically, I knew of the 'I Have A Dream' speech and a few other wonderful quotes of his that I'd read on monuments dedicated to his journey that I photographed in Denver, Colorado. Other than this I felt a bit of a fraud for proclaiming to hero worship this man I knew so little about.

This book outlined the dedication that MLK had to the cause, along with the 'intellectual underpinnings of his wisdom' as one reviewer put it. This deeply intellectual angle made it a struggle at times for me to get through, but much like the uphill battle against racism, it was a journey well worth taking.

The last chapter was extremely sad and beautfully summed up the dedication to Christ and good that MLK worked tirelessly towards. This man was a true Christian in every sense of the word, tearing down at the cynicism I have built up towards Christianity over the years.

Martin Luther King Jr is a wonderful example to even intend to follow, one of God's most loyal children, and someone that I truly admire and respect.

Amen!

4-0 out of 5 stars Accurate & Intructive but not the Full Picture
Reading Martin Luther King Jr.'s own words gives such insight into the man and the contribution he made to civil rights. Dr. King's commitment to such a noble cause and the sacrifices that he made truly make him a hero who should not be forgotten. The only shortcoming is so many things about a person's personal life are not easily seen in their speeches and letters and this is true of this compliation. It would be great to read a more extensive biography to "fill in the gaps" about his life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Every American
Clayborne Carson's representation of Dr. King's passionate, articulate vocation makes this book a bar-setter only rivaled by the books Martin himself published. The book gives a light recount of Dr. King's childhood, followed by a detailed description of his ministry of hope and efforts to stem the tide of racism and segregation in America. The only criticism I have for the book is that there is no audio tape in which the book is read by the King himself (it was, of course, written after Martin's death).

This book would make an excellent gift for recipients of all ages. I'm 16 and I found it to be extremely inspiring, simple, and yet so moving that I was often on the verge of joyful tears.

God Bless You All,

5-0 out of 5 stars A review by Isaiah, Mrs. Bhola's second grade
If you think black folks should be nice to white folks and white folks should be nice to black folks you would like Happy Birthday Martin Luther King by Jean Marzollo. It's about how he made the city be nice to black people. He was a pastor. My favorite was when he died and had a funeral. My favorite part was when he died and had a funeral. Check it out at your library today.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Favorite in our School
Dr. King is a favorite hero among elementary school children. This book is the perfect way to introduce them to the life and philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The language is simple and the illustrations are interesting. I've found that although students know the "Happy Birthday" song, they aren't aware that Stevie Wonder wrote the song as a tribute to Dr. King.We always end our read aloud by singing a chorus of the song.

5-0 out of 5 stars An effective picture book on an important American leader
"Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King" fills a need for effective picture books for young readers about this important American leader. The scratchboard illustrations, although unusual for this format, create a vibrancy that enhances the text.

This narrative revolves around the statement: "The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., is famous because he helped our country change some of its laws." Then in simple language it goes on to explain some of the laws he helped change.

It goes on to say, "Poor people, rich people, white people, black people, and people from all around the world listened when Martin Luther King spoke." Of course, there is mention of his 1963 speech in Washington, D.C., where his "dream was that people everywhere would learn to live together without being mean to one another."

This is an excellent book to read aloud to younger students, although as a school librarian, I have seen it used effectively up to the 5th grade (like another reviewer here). Another good title that covers some of the same territory for young readers is "A Picture Book of Martin Luther King, Jr.," by David A. Adler.

4-0 out of 5 stars First Grade Teachers......A book for you!
I've been searching for a short read about Martin Luther King, Jr. that would excite my first grade students and keep them focused on the background of this great American. The illustrations are lovely and thesize of the book is perfect for classroom storytime.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a very good book about a very good man.
I am a fifth grader at North Hills Traditional Academy.

I like this book because it tells how Martin Luther King grew up. And it was sweet how he grew up.

I like the book because the pictures are colorful and the storyis sweet.

The thing I really like about the book is that it tells sweetthings about his personal life, not just his public life.

Mostly, Ireally like it because it tells how he grew up and about his friendshipwith a little white boy.

It's really cleverbecause it shows whatMartin Luther King was like when he was young.

It's a great book. I thinkyou should read it. And I know that you will enjoy it. ... Read more

Book Description
The development of Martin Luther's thought was both a symptom and moving force in the transformation of the Middle Ages into the modern world. Geographical discovery, an emerging scientific tradition, and a climate of social change had splintered the unity of medieval Christian culture, and these changes provided the background for Luther's theological challenge. His new apprehension of Scripture and fresh understanding of man's relation to God demanded a break with the Church as then constituted and released the powerful impulses that carried the Reformation. Luther's vigorous, colorful language still retains the excitement it had for thousands of his contemporaries. In this volume, Dr. Dillenberger has made a representative selection from Luther's extensive writings, and has also provided the reader with a lucid introduction to his thought. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Luther
I think this is just about the best introduction to Luther's writing around. It covers a pretty broad range of his writing, and seems to give a pretty good introduction to his theology and thought.Incidentally, "Freedom of a Christian" is worth the purchase price alone. It is simply the best discussion of faith and works that I have ever read.It is immenseley clarifying.I would recommend this highly, particularly since it is so inexpensive.

4-0 out of 5 stars Denying Papal Bull
Dillenberger presents a selections of treatises, Biblical commentaries, and sermonssensibly arranged with a good introduction. Two missing works were the Small Catechism and his speech at the Diet of Worms ("Here I stand ... I cannot do otherwise").In three key works from 1520 "An appeal to the ruling class of German Nationality", "The Pagan Servitude of the Church" and "The Freedom of a Christian", Luther develops (re-discovers?) the doctrine of justification by faith and emphasis on Scripture.Luther steers from a legalistic life of a Christian ("Beware lest you make Christ into a Moses").He vigorously attacks the practice of indulgences, Papal Supremacy and the papal court: "At present there is a crawling mass of reptiles, all claiming to pay allegiance to the Pope, but Babylon never saw the life of these miscreants". At times he practices his own demagoguery; of St. James he does "not hold it to be of apostolic authorship".

Luther attempts to remove the differences between cleric and public classes by opening the Eucharist to everyone and his German Bible made Scripture available to German peasantry. Luther grants spiritual rights to the individual, and states importance of the Christian community, but he did not extend this politically, and should not be viewed as advocating political democracy. The "Appeal to the ruling class" was popular among the nobility because it provided justification for not sending money to Rome.

After reading St. Augustine's Confessions, it is interesting to see how this Augustinian monk extends the idea of grace. The works on free will were the most paradoxical for me.He seems to argue both that without grace man is incapable of free will, but also that"God has taken my salvation out of the control of my own will".

4-0 out of 5 stars A critique of the medieval Catholic Church.
Martin Luther accused the Catholic Church of abandoning the teachings of Christ.Rather than preaching the Bible to the masses, the clergy instead oppressed them by forcing them to follow multitudinous Church customs. Luther didn't oppose customs per se, but only the Church's placement ofman-made doctrines over the Bible. His most vehement criticisms wereleveled against works, especially the practice of indulgences.Lutherargued that the Church had replaced faith in Christ with good works as themeans to salvation, to the detriment of the masses.Worse, this erroneousdoctrine was not accidental but a deliberate scheme by the clergy toacquire wealth.

Luther blamed even St. Francis for establishing suchcustoms as monasticism and asceticism that resulted in a division of thebody of believers into a laity and a clergy.Luther laid the most blamefor the Church's waywardness on the popes. As leaders, it was theirresponsibility to ensure that the Bible's doctrines are taught andfollowed. However, not only did they allow to be practiced doctrines thatcontradict the Bible, but they also violated Biblical teachings.Forexample, popes owned vast real estates and excommunicated individuals tointimidate the disloyal.Consequently, the Catholic Church of medievalEurope became a powerful political entity, despite Christ's admonition toChristians to abstain from worldly affairs. In view of these gross andblatant violations of Christian doctrine, Luther referred to thecontemporary pope as the antichrist and an agent of the devil.

Although Iam not Lutheran, this book provides an essential overview of the issuesthat fueled the Protestant Reformation. It should be read by people whoare interested in European history, with an emphasis on the beginning ofthe Renaissance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Luther intro
If you've never read any of Luthers works before, you should read this book. There has never been a stronger writer on the subject of faith, than Martin Luther -excepting maybe for moses or St.Paul.Try this book or"The basic theological writings of ML" -I am not lutherine.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Lutheran books I've ever run across!
What a wonderful introduction to Martin Luther! If you're thirsty for his writings, this is the book you should start with.Searching for books by him usually turns up many expensive volumes, meant for preachers, notlaymen. That's why I'm so glad I found this book. It's laid outperfectly, to give you a wonderful idea of who Luther was, the Reformation, and, most importantly, his theology.Every Lutheran should be firmlyintroduced to Luther (no matter how obvious it seems, it doesn't happenenough), especially those fundamentalists of the Missouri Synod andLutheran Brethren who have drifted so far from him and the Gospel ofChrist. This is a wonderful book.Take it from an ELCA pastor. This bookwill show you.I'm seriously considering giving a copy to each of myconfirmation students every year.Let Grace reign, not legalism andjudgement. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!
This edition of an otherwise wonderful book is terrible!Themargins between the lines are so tight and the print so small and dense that one practically needs a magnifying glass to read it!We bought this as a Christmas gift for my husband's grandfather and were unable to give it to him because of its physical unreadability.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Breathtaking and Exciting Bio
This book is written with intense, muscular prose, and oversees the life of a mighty thinker going through rough times for decades. Like the 16th century woodcuts that are depicted in illustrations throughout the work, the words seem to have a power that is more like an engraving or sculpture than passive tableau. The prose and mastery of complex theological, interpersonal, and historical issues gave me a reading experience I had not had since reading Allan Bullock's book on Hitler years ago.
One feels profoundly immersed in the realities of Luther's struggles, yet at the same time, feels the imponderable weight of God's Providence. How did he wrestle with so many deep issues yet have time to marry, have six children, have meetings with friends and students, survive debilitating ailments, rebound from intense persecutions, and maintain a vibrant -- though sometimes coarse -- perspective? As I read the volume, I marched with Bainton through the intense and densely troubled waters of theological and liturgical disputes.
Although I already in part knew the outcome;yet, at the same time, I was breathless: what would happen next?It was like watching those serial shows on TV years ago...what would happen to Flash Gordon in the next episode? So, I asked myself: how will Martin L. fare in the debate with Eck? How will he hold up before the Holy Roman Emperor? Will he survive the attacks on his life? What attitudes will he take towards other dissenting "Protestants?" It is a tribute to Prof. Bainton's narrative genius that I was brought into the "reality" of the times. In real life, we wonder: what will happen next -- especially with controversial actions that stir our deepest feelings.
This book is more than a biography. As I said above, it's also a woodcut and a memorable personal experience where we get to participate in Prof. Bainton's great exposition of the life of the irascible but beloved Doktor Luther.

4-0 out of 5 stars Life of Luther
This book was recommended to me by a Lutheran minister. I am not Lutheran, but when the school my children attend became a Lutheran school I thought that I should learn more about Luther. This book then is quite a scholarly work and goes into a lot of doctrine such as that of 'indulgences'. The great thing about this book is that you learn as much Catholic doctrine as you do Luthern because these doctrines must be explained before any critique is made. In some places the book is very easy to read (especially the parts detailing Luthers childhood and relationship with his family) and in others it is difficult (the doctirnal sections), but if you persist you will emerge much richer for the effort.

4-0 out of 5 stars Here I Stand is an amazingly interesting read!
I purchased the book after watching the movie Luther with Joseph Fiennes (sp?).I usually do that in reverse order but not this time. The book very logically and clearly (and with great clarity and attention to detail) portrays the inner life and events going on at that time in Luther's life.It is a great review of history, the Catholic Church and the mind of Martin Luther.
The only downside is that you often need to read it with a dictionary present due to some of the words and context in which it is written that are not readily used in daily discussions.Great way to learn them though.
This is a wonderful read and one that I could not put down once I started. He is a very influential and fascinating historical figure.

5-0 out of 5 stars A man named Martin, a Reformer named Luther
Martin Luther is one of the historical protagonists who has had the greatest amout of biographies written. This is a biography which displays not only the Reformer, but also the man Martin Luther. This little board book is the most beautiful and perfect book on Martin Luther King, Jr. I have ever seen as Dr. King's message is kept pure, untainted, clear and focused. The colors are soft and gentle, the words simple and easy. It is a perfect introduction to Dr. King, his life, his work as well as an introduction into human values such as respect and equality. It is never too early to begin educating children on such matters nor too late for adults to refresh their memories on these core matters especially as so many are waving flags: remember what those flags represent and the lessons of Dr. King. This little book can help any age do so...even you!

Leadership motivational speaker Donald T. Phillips, who has previously drawn organizational lessons for modern businesses from the careers of Abraham Lincoln and the Founding Fathers, turns to civil-rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. as a role model. A discussion of the Montgomery bus boycott, for example, draws out such principles as "Set goals and create a plan of action" and "Involve the people." More effective as a self-help book for business than as a biography, it does provide a useful introduction to King's life.Book Description

While the American Civil War formally ended slavery, it did not end segregation or racial discrimination. It took nearly 15 years of activism, led by the nonviolent movement organized by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., to complete the transformation. The final result was the elimination of federal and state-sanctioned segregation and discrimination. This book chronicles the tenets of leadership that Dr. King practiced during the American Civil Rights Movement. From mastering the art of public speaking to persuading through love and nonviolence, from encouraging imaginative new solutions in changing times to preaching hope, optimism and the power of dreams, this study of Dr. King's leadership offers a definitive and inspiring modern-day example of leadership at its best. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional narrative of a great leader
Donald T. Phillips does an exceptional job at narrating the life of the late great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He does an incredible job in tying in the aspects of Dr. King's life as a man, and activist together with the principals of Leadership.

He breaks down the book into 4 sections, that each details the start and end of the American Civil Rights movement. Phillips does an amazing job at chronicling the events that most shaped the philosophy of Dr. King.

I truly enjoyed this book because it helped me realize that it is possible for me to achieve my goals using the same techniques that Dr. King used. The book does a great job at outlining how a normal person can create change the way Dr. King did. Whether you live in turbulent times like those in which the Civil Rights took place or not.

I recommend this book to anyone in a leadership position to those who aspire to be leaders, but mostly to those with a goal to succeed. The knowledge you will acquire with this book is invaluable to future successes.

The book targets all, but I think it specifically aims to inspire African- Americans especially those who wish to be in leadership positions. The book in general is a great read for businesses and for groups in general. It informs the audience about the dynamics of groups and how to work through the problems that groups face.

It helps inform leaders as to the advantages and disadvantages of being a leader. Overall the book is a great read. And you will truly enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for aspiring leaders
Donald Phillips did a wonderful job of telling the story of Martin Luther King Jr. from his childhood to his death, and connecting it all to a marvelous leadership style.Being a student of leadership studies and a fan of Martin Luther King Jr., I chose this book as a study of both subjects.Having read it, I have to say I learned more about leadership from this book than any other I have read. However, I am no longer a fan of MLK......... he is now a hero of mine.

As Donald Phillips points out, for every major turning point in American history, creative leaders - right for the times and uniquely suited to the task - assume the mantle of leadership.Donald Phillips not only describes how MLK ended up at the mantle, but how and why he was the right person for the job.

MLK's movement is not the same civil rights movement being pushed by the self-serving, so-called, activists today. Read this book, you will learn about a true leader and what a true leader is. It is easy reading and inspiring.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful!
Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have A Dream" speech was voted the most electrifying public address of the twentieth century. It takes some kind of a leader to give that kind of a speech. Donald T. Phillips presents the ideals of leadership that Martin Luther King Jr. followed in an overview of the history of the civil rights struggle. Phillips describes the techniques King used at various stages of the civil rights battle. He also shares King's comments on leadership. Many of the principles will be quite familiar: listen to learn, lead by being led, awaken direct action, encourage creativity and involve the people. However, the book is especially interesting when it demonstrates how King put these principles into practice. This well-organized, well-written book is clear, direct, and easy to read. While it is written for the general public (especially for African-Americans and those interested in civil rights), we [...] find this book interesting for all managers and executives, particularly those who like to learn the lessons of history.

5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome book!
I am a student and a teacher of leadership skills, and I have found no better example than Martin Luther King Jr.This book combines the history of King's movement, but also chronicles the qualities which made King great. The text is easy to read, and fascinating.Martin Luther King, Jr. On Leadership should be required reading for anyone who hopes to impact their world. The famed Harvard psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg, who studied moral development, named King as one of the greatest moral thinkers in history.Read this book, and you will understand why.

5-0 out of 5 stars inspiring book on leadership
I picked up this book simply thinking it would be a great story about leadership, but the underlying history of Martin Luther King is riveting as well. The leadership stories translate well to business and personal leadership--they speak to (all) people wanting to be part of a higher, unifying mission. If you like to "mark-up" the margins withthoughts keep a pen handy for this one.Its a book I talked about withcolleagues and family more than any other I've read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Heads up: the CD is for PC-only
This is an excellent book, but I did want to give readers a heads up: the included CD only works on a PC.Thus, it will not work on a Mac computer.Again (and despite this shortcoming), I have found this a very valuable book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great one volume tool
This work is a great compilation of the works of Luther. It is fair and and also a great start in understanding and reading Luther's works. The one thing that I really like about the editor is that he gives a small introduction to each writing, the when and why the particular writing was written.

The book starts off with Luther's major theologies in the 97 Theses, 95 Theses and the Heidelberg Disputation. This compilation of the 97 theses was nice to see since it is so unfamiliar to most people but was Luther's first cry against Aristotle's theology. Most people have heard of Luther's famous quote, "Reason is a whore!," well the 97 Theses: Disputation against Scholastic Theology, gives you the full reasoning for this cry.

The book then materializes Luther's thoughts on the Power of the Word of God, The righteousness in Christ (which includes excerpts of his famous work, The Bondage of the Will), The promise of the Sacraments, The Reform of the Church, and the living and dying as a Christian. These are all done as not only formal works but also in some of his sermons.

I would definitely recommend this book as it will start the reader off on the right foot of Luther's theology and then you can decide where you would like to find further insight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Overview of Luther
The reason Luther remains a puzzle to some is that his theology did have development. This book has selections from all periods of his career. When you get to "The Babylonian Captivity of the Church," there can be no question as to where he stands-- also with the "Smalcald Articles. This book does have some summaries and explanations at the beginning of sections that explain the historic background. A good summary of the 55 volume "American Edition."

5-0 out of 5 stars The Power and the Wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24)
This is an incredible volume and, in my opinion, a better introduction to Luther than "Selections From His Writings".It contains a number of his better-known works including the infinitely worthy "Smaller Catechism," the infamous "95 Theses," and the thesis chapters from his personal favorite, "The Bondage of the Will."Alongside these monumental works are set lesser-known, but equally powerful writings."A Meditation on Christ's Passion" held me near tears for its whole length and "The Freedom of a Christian" is (in my humble opinion) one of the greatest pieces of Christian literature ever penned. It would be too great a task to examine the whole of the contents of the book, but I would like to look in more detail at my personal favorite of the works in this anthology, "The Freedom of a Christian."

Martin Luther's treatise "The Freedom of a Christian" is perhaps the most powerful and concise presentation of the Christian life ever written. I cannot recommend this work highly enough. I rank this among the very best of Luther's works (and that is really saying something). If an inexpensive copy were still in publication I would buy every copy to give as gifts to friends and family. The power, discernment, brevity and readability of this work make a true gem among Reformation writings (and Christian writings in general). Here you will find the essence of the spirit of the Reformation distilled into a guide for practical, biblical living.

With the clarity and bold authority of a true prophet, Luther sets forth the whole of the Christian life in two theses: "A Christian is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none. A Christian is a perfectly dutiful servant of all, subject to all." We are free from sin and the law (subject to none) but slaves to Christ in love (subject to all). As Paul writes in Romans 6:22, "But now...you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God."

Luther writes as a shepherd of the common people and the tone and content differ greatly from his better-known debate-oriented works (ie. Bondage of the Will, 95 Theses). The doctrine of justification by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone is the heart and soul of Luther's message, founded upon a firm conviction in the authority of scripture alone.

He writes, "One thing, and only one thing, is necessary for Christian life, righteousness, and freedom. That one thing is the most holy Word of God, the gospel of Christ."

And again, "It ought to be the first concern of every Christian to lay aside all confidence in works and increasingly to strengthen faith alone and through faith to grow in the knowledge, not of works, but of Christ Jesus, who suffered and rose for him.... No other work makes a Christian.... 'This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent' (John 6:29)."

And regarding our service to God, "...In this way the stronger member may serve the weaker, and we may be sons of God, each caring for and working for the other, bearing one another's burdens and so fulfilling the law of Christ. This is a truly Christian life. Here faith is truly active through love. That is, it finds expression in works of the freest service, cheerfully and lovingly done, with which a man willingly serves another without hope of reward; and for himself he is satisfied with the fullness and wealth of his faith."

Luther has been described by some as "abrasive" and "crude."O, for more abrasive, crude, Spirit-filled men of God like Luther. He speaks in the manner of Peter--both as a man of the common people and as a prophet of the Most High God.Here is the heart and soul of the Reformation.Luther's heart is poured out in his writings and his heart is filled only with the gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ, which is the power and the wisdom of God.

5-0 out of 5 stars great composite of luther's famous works
this book is an excellent encyclopedia of luther's most famous works.Luther was a theologian for the people and his paradoxes and ironies are easy to understand.Luther's intoxication with the proper understanding of the Law & Gospel thrilled his soul and he shows how it affects the sacraments, the church, the government, and of course, justification of sinful man before God. if you do not have 44 volumes of Luther's works in your library, this one is a good start. ... Book Description
On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. stood in front of the Lincoln Memorial looking out over thousands of troubled Americans who had gathered in the name of civil rights and uttered his now famous words, "I have a dream . . ." It was a speech that changed the course of history.

This anniversary edition honors Martin Luther King Jr.'s courageous dream and his immeasurable contribution by presenting his most memorable words in a concise and convenient edition. As Coretta Scott King says in her foreword, "This collection includes many of what I consider to be my husband's most important writings and orations." In addition to the famed keynote address of the 1963 march on Washington, the renowned civil rights leader's most influential words included here are the "Letter from a Birmingham Jail," the essay "Pilgrimage to Nonviolence," and his last sermon, "I See the Promised Land," preached the day before he was assassinated.

Editor James M. Washington arranged the selections chronologically, providing headnotes for each selection that give a running history of the civil rights movement and related events. In his introduction, Washington assesses King's times and significance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Collection of Speeches
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of America's greatest heroes and this is a collection of his wonderful writings and speeches. Often people stop at "I Have a Dream" but this shows the complete evolution of Dr. King. A wonderful read that has been part of my library for the past 10 years -- and I've read it three times and often use it for reference and store it next to the Bible.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMERICANS SHOULD REALIZE THIS 'DREAM' TO THE FULLEST!
Dr. Martin Luther King's collection of writings and speeches, "I Have A Dream", brings aspiration to light. The events that surrounded the life and death of this true hero reveals the shameful fact that no matter how great the United States of America is today, it is one country that was nurtured with inhumane machinery: slavery, racism, injustice, Mickey-Mouse freedom, and Mickey-Mouse democracy. I hate to think about it, but it is an honest fact, whichwe should all come to terms with. Nobody can rewrite history.
The 256 pages that is "I Have A Dream" was enough to highlight the wickedness and the violence that were deliberately sustained in America, for a full century, after a bloody Civil War ended her tenacity on slavery.
One question that will always beg for answer is: How on earth did U.S. Presidents who presided over the ruthless color-bar era qualified for those Nobel Peace Prizes that they received? Knowing what life was like in the U.S.A. just a couple of decades ago melts my heart. "I Have A Dream" is a big eye-opener!

5-0 out of 5 stars The essential King
"I Have a Dream: Writings and Speeches That Changed the World," by Martin Luther King, Jr., is a fine collection of texts by this important figure. The book has been edited by James M. Washington. Coming in at less than 300 pages, this is a concise but meaty book.

Washington includes King's most important texts: the "Letter from Birmingham Jail"; the "I Have a Dream" speech; his Nobel Prize acceptance speech; "My Trip to the Land of Gandhi"; "A Time to Break Silence," his 1967 speech criticizing the United States war in Vietnam, and more. These writings and speeches cover King's great themes: nonviolent resistance, the African-American civil rights movement, etc.

Those seeking a more comprehensive collection of Kings' work should seek out "A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr." also edited by James M. Washington. At more than 700 pages, this is a truly monumental collection, and includes much material not found in "I Have a Dream": the 1965 "Playboy" interview, transcripts of television interviews, and more. But for those who want a shorter text that cuts to the heart of King's life and work, "I Have a Dream" is perfect.

"I Have a Dream" reveals King to be a true Christian prophet, and a man with a global vision. As literature, these texts also show King to be the heir of such American thinkers as Henry David Thoreau and W.E.B. DuBois. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Dr. King's works
This collection of Dr. King's writings includes all the major speeches -- such as I Have A Dream and I See the Promised Land, as well as important writings such as Letter from A Birmingham Jail.It also has great essays on the lessons Dr. King learned from Ghandi and a wonderful introduction from Mrs. King. This is a great collection to get started learning about Dr. King -- from his own pen.I highly reccomend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars To understand the Reformation
This book is a key document for all those (students, professors, ministers, scholars) who are interested in understanding the Reformation from its very beginning. Which were Luther's (and many theologians' and clerks') demands at the beginning of the 16th. century? The major answers to this question are in this booklet, written by the great Reformer's own hands.

4-0 out of 5 stars Founding Protestant
This book is a few pages long is bound in pamplet form. Contains 95 passages. This really attacks the Catholic church that he saw atrocities in at the time. I got the impression he was trying to say that the Pope is not the iotola of religion.

5-0 out of 5 stars historical and theological beauty
The language of these is not easy to read, but beautiful to consider. We take most of these ideas for granted, or try to make more out of them than was included in these theses. The historical and personal risk Luther took to post these on the doors of his church should inspire and humble us all.

The 95 theses began the reformation of the Christian faith.Up to the point of these writings, the Church had been largely unchecked in her errors.Debates may have stayed private, were it not for a courageous minister.Luther did not intend to leave his beloved church, but hoped to change the ideas and behaviors which distracted her from the word of God.

These were posted on a church, for the church, but their impact has reached to the farthest corners of modern hearts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gotta have!
This text is a concise review of exactly the points Martin Luther raised to confront a corrupt deMedici controlled catholic church. As with the Bible, it's always best to go back to the original.

Book Description

"We've got some difficult days ahead," civil rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr., told a crowd gathered at Memphis's Clayborn Temple on April 3, 1968. "But it really doesn't matter to me now because I've been to the mountaintop. . . . And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the promised land."

These prohetic words, uttered the day before his assassination, challenged those he left behind to see that his "promised land" of racial equality became a reality; a reality to which King devoted the last twelve years of his life.

These words and other are commemorated here in the only major one-volume collection of this seminal twentieth-century American prophet's writings, speeches, interviews, and autobiographical reflections. A Testament of Hope contains Martin Luther King, Jr.'s essential thoughts on nonviolence, social policy, integration, black nationalism, the ethics of love and hope, and more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Legacy of Hope - Mighty and Powerful and Beautifully Crafted
As a Hispanic-American increasingly involved in speaking out about social issues and looking for inspiration, I stumbed upon this incredible book.

I have since learned to love the writings and speeches of Doctor Martin Luther King. They are mighty and powerful and beautifully crafted. Biblical in their content and style, they are tremendously moving. They simplify the complicated and elevate the important!

His words ring out as loud and clear today as they did some forty years ago. For example, in one of his last and most radical speeches, "Where Do We Go From Here?" Doctor King exhorted:

"Let us go out with a 'divine dissatisfaction!

Let us be dissatisfied until America will no longer have a high blood pressure of Creeds and an anemia of Deeds!

Let us be dissatisfied until the tragic walls that separate the outer city of wealth and comfort from the inner city of poverty and dispair shall be crushed by the battering rams of the forces of justice!

Let us be dissatisfied until those that life on the outskirts of hope are brought into the metropolis of daily security!

Let us be dissatisfied until slums are cast into the junk heaps of history and every family is living in a decent sanitary home!"

This book is recommended for anyone looking for wisdom and inspiration and wishing to learn more about Doctor Martin Luther King and America's civil rights movement.

Buy it! Read it! And get involved in the battle for social justice for all Americans.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough and moving chronicle of a heroic man and Christian
A suggested read for anyone (emphasis).Through the essays, abridged novels, and interviews, one can gather a personal and philosophical history of MLK, a summary of the civil rights movement, and a greater understanding of life and religion (which are inextricably attached really). I particularly appreciated the notion that civil rights was really about human rights on a global scale. He oft points out that poor whites, Latinos, and Asians, faced the same issues in the U. S. and across the globe.

A central theme is the principles of nonviolent resistance, which are essentially (if properly understood) unbiased and unwavering compassion and respect for (all) human life.I believe this is the single greatest area of failure in our current society. The book has entrenched that position further, with a deepened understanding of what it means, where the problems have exhibited themselves, and how we might improve upon the situation.

I must say as a native Alabamian and habitant of Birmingham for almost 10 years, the book has particular relevance to me.However, the history chronicled within is the history of man and is therefore applicable to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars The great American voice for Freedom "I know one day we as a people will reach the Promised Land"
Martin Luther King Jr. the great American Civil Rights leader was a voice not only for black people in the United States, but for Mankind as a whole. He dreamed but he did not dream for black people alone but for every single American, and every single human being. Essentially his message was one of hope.
He was perhaps the most powerful speaker the United States had in the twentieth century. His 'I have a dream' speech on the Mall in Washington at the height of the Civil Rights movements was a call for and affirmation of human dignity and freedom.
He spoke in the language and rhythms of the Bible.
In his Nobel Prize Speech he articulated his faith in nonviolence as a means for human liberation. While it might be possible to question the validity of the non- violent option when confronting the most ruthless forms of totalitarian Evil it nonetheless is tribute to the spirit of King's deep Christian faith that he so passionately preached the 'non- violent doctrine'.
This book is a testimony to one of the truly great Americans of the twentieth - century. A man who by his example , by his deeds, ( And his words too are great deeds) gave hope and freedom to so many.
This work could not be recommended more highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Reading In a Decade
I thought that I knew a lot about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but this book has really opened up to me his true character. As I read his precious speeches, articles and books I am so happy that I purchased this compilation of Dr. Kings' works and I have been given a special glimpse into the life of such a genuine and extraordinary individual.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Indispensible Collection
A Testament of Hope is indispensible for a complete understanding of MLK Jr. the man. He was so much more than a monolithic figure of the Civil Rights movement. He was a pastor, theologian, philosopher, diplomat, husband, and father. A Testament of Hope helps the reader to grasp the multifaceted life of this icon of the twentieth century. This book lets the reader into the very human life of MLK Jr. Nowhere have I discovered a more cogent explanation of passive resistance than in the various speeches and essays contained in this book. If you are engaged in the struggle for civil rights or if you seek to better understand modern humanity more completely add this book to your library and consult it often.

Book Description
Reissued with a new cover in trade paperback format in the Newmarket "Words Of" series, this perennial classic—over 200,000 copies sold—belongs in every home, school and library. Throughout his brief life, Martin Luther King communicated vision, passion, and inspiration. He led millions of people in a nonviolent movement that shattered the system of segregation in the South, and at the age of 39 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his eloquent, passionate advocacy of civil and human rights. This timeless volume, authorized by the estate of Martin Luther King, includes highlights from the legendary civil rights leader's speeches, sermons, and writings selected by his wife Coretta Scott King, who contributes an impressive introduction on Dr. King's life and legacy. The stirring book contains approximately 120 quotations, focusing on seven areas of concern: The Community of Man, Racism, Civil Rights, Justice and Freedom, Faith and Religion, Nonviolence, and Peace. Also included is a detailed chronology of Dr. King's life and its involvement in the civil rights movement in our time.

"I have the audacity to believe that people everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality and justice for their spirits. I believe that what self-centered men have torn down, other-centered men can build up." —Martin Luther King, Jr. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars deeply moving
I was perusing through my bookshelf today, and stumbled across a very old edition of this book, "The Words of Martin Luther King, Jr."
Well I'd always noticed it here and there - but today I actually read it.

It's fantastic. It's something else. He was a genius before his time - yet he managed to stand up, at the right time.

Each excerpt makes you think. Very deep and moving.

Powerful. I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars His fundamental commitment to unconditional love and unarmed truth
This book is a small compilation of quotes from Dr. King's writings and speeches. It's never a bad idea to honor the civil rights leaders and martyrs by reading literature that would again remind us of their struggle.
Through his words we will be reminded of how far we have come:
"I can foresee the Negro vote becoming consistently the decisive vote in national elections." -chapter on Justice and Freedom
Through his words we will be reminded of how far we haven't come:
"...wars are poor chisels for carving out peaceful tomorrows." - chapter on Peace

In one sitting, you could read this book in its entirety. As benefactors of his sacrifice, we should spare a few moments of our time to reflect on Dr. King and his enduring legacy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Small but effective collection of MLK's speeches
When looking for some words of tribute to use at a church function, I recalled the copy of the book sitting amongst others in my home library. No better orator could have been selected than the revered civil rights leader. My presentation went off without and hitch and for that, I thank Dr. King.

This collection is divided into ten sections, with notable commentary by Dr. King:

1.The Community of Man
2.Racism
3.Civil Rights
4.Justice and Freedom
5.Faith and Religion
6.Nonviolence
7.Peace
8."I've Been to the Mountain Top" (excerpt)
9."I Have a Dream" (excerpt)
10.Proclamation of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day by then-President Ronald Reagan

The book begins with a foreward by King's widow, Coretta, and ends with a chronology and sources of the works printed.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent sampling of King's writings and ideas.
After having read quite abit by and About King over the years, I would recommend this book to anyone, whether they were new to King's philosophies and ideas or a veteran of the movement he helped to create within thiscountry and the world. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read
I came across this book while looking for other homeschooling books here at Amazon.Well, I ordered it and was extremely pleased! At Amazon you couldn't look through it like other books on-line so I took a chance and bought it.So glad I did.It almost brought tears to my eyes while reading it...knowing the strong, resolute faith Luther exhibited during a time when execution by the church was not an unknown practice.Truly a man of God who stood steadfast and unwavering in his beliefs and helped turn the tide against the church practices of his time.A great read and highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Many of the major consequences of Luther's actions are not mentioned
Martin Luther was indeed a man who changed the world. When he posted the list of 95 theses on the door of a church, he started a massive movement that led to a series of revolutions in Europe. Fortunately for him, the time was ripe for such changes. First and foremost, the printing press had recently been invented. By allowing the words to be quickly and cheaply reproduced, his messages could be spread quickly. Secondly, one cannot ignore the political climate. Many members of the nobility of northern Europe were restless under the political control imposed by others in the south. Luther survived in the early years only through the protection of the powerful German princes.
Luther was also in many ways the founder of the modern German nation. By translating the bible from Latin into German, he helped develop the language and a national consciousness among the German populace. Fundamentally, Luther was a conservative, when the peasants revolted, he came down firmly on the side of the aristocracy, opposing mass movements when they were not religiously directed.
While this is a good bock for children and Luther deserves the accolades for his incredible achievements, not enough is mentioned about the significance of the political situation in Europe. Furthermore, there is no mention of the horrific religious wars that took place in Europe over the reformation and counter-reformation. Finally, there is little mention of how the newfound religious freedom allowed for the dramatic expansion of scientific exploration. Scientists such as the persecuted Galileo no longer had to fear the consequences of violating the dogma of the Catholic Church.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book on a great man.
I've read this to my children several times and they love it each time. This is a great introduction to Luther for younger readers or pre-readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars better for older kids
Beautiful picture book highlighting the important events in Luther's life, and why the Reformation was the result. Great resource for introducing the subject to kids, but would disagree with the recommended age -- the vocabulary used and Luther's belief in the concept of grace (a person can't "earn" their way to heaven) a bit over the head of younger kids (4-6), altho they still will pick up on basic story. My experience with reading this to kids is that even those a bit older (8-10) will enjoy, and probably come away with a better grasp of the importance of Luther'slife and teachings. I like that the author also touches on the fact that for all Luther's greatness, a few of his opinions (I believe much later in his life) weren't necessarily favorable -- allowing you to respect his genius without making him a "saint".Not at all "preachy" -- just a good overview of the story and Luther's beliefs.A book all Lutherans should read, but also important and interesting to those of other denominatons or just interested in history, as Luther's ideas ended up having an effect on many aspects of society (education, politics, banking, etc. -- you'll have to go beyond this book to discover why) which benefit us still today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
I cannot say enough about this work and this author. All of his children's books are beautifully illustrated and wonderful written. I'm saying this as a college guy... so it means a lot. This book is an excellent way to expose young children to Martin Luther, a true hero of the faith.

Please take a look at his other children's books... very first Christmas, Easter, Christians, etc. Also check out his fiction books such as "A Skeleton in God's Closet" and "Pontius Pilate." You can also check out his reactionary work to the da vinci code as well as his non-fiction works especially the autobiography of his father, Walter Maier, who was the first Lutheran Hour Speaker.

5-0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this book
My five-year-old daughter was fascinated with this book even though it didn't include fairies, animals, or dinosaurs. I was very happy with the information they presented which gives some basic information about Dr. King while not treating his death in such a way that might overly upset sensitive children like mine. The illustrations are wonderfully done and my daughter looked them over carefully for a long time. It is a wonderful opportunity to launch more discussions about racism and the way we treat other people because of their gender, race, or religion.

Book Description
Martin Marty—professor, author, pastor, historian, and journalist—is, in Bill Moyers’s words, “the most influential interpreter of American religion.” In Martin Luther this man of unswerving faith, rooted in his own Lutheran tradition yet deeply committed to helping enrich a pluralist society, brings to powerful life the devout Reformation figure whose despair for a perilous world, felt anew in our own times, drove him to a ceaseless search for assurance of God’s love. It was one that led him steadily to a fresh interpretation of human interaction with God—as born solely from God’s grace and not the Church’s mediation—and to the famous theses he posted at Wittenberg in 1517.

Luther’s persistence in this belief, and in his long battle with Church leaders—embellished by rich historical background—make Marty’s biography riveting reading. Luther’s obdurate yet receptive stance, so different from the travestied image of “fundamentalism” we currently face, restored the balance between religion and the individual. Martin Luther is at once a fascinating history, a story of immense spiritual passion and amazing grace, and a superb intellectual biography. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice and short
Not as comprehensive as Roland H. Bointon's "Here I Stand". But it will do the job if your time for Martin Luther is very limited. Marty Martin concentrates on providing the reader with an insight into Martin Luther's inner experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Introduction To A Tremendously Important Life
For a reader looking for a concise, relatively short, introduction to the life of one of Christianity's most important figures, "Martin Luther" by Martin Marty is an excellent choice. This book does a good job of surveying the life and teachings of this founder of the Reformation.Marty presents a balanced picture, neither attacking its subject nor ignoring his faults and shortcomings. He generally presents the facts and lets the reader draw his own conclusions. While not ignoring Luther's sensual appetites, Marty explains how they conform to his theological teaching.Luther's attractiveness to princes but his hostility to the empowerment of peasants is an example of an historical fact which limits the vision of Luther as a champion of "democracy" against the establishment.

At times the book seems to focus on Luther's writings and preaching, but later gets into more personal details.I suspect that this reflects the scarcity of the historical record with respect to some parts of Luther's life. While not delving into an analysis of Luther's impact on the world, the mere recitation of his life's work enables the reader to appreciate the tremendous impact which Luther has had on history. The reader, whether Protestant, Catholic or non-religious, who is interested in either religious or secular history will find "Martin Luther" to an worthwhile read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent biography for the casual reader
I've got to give the book 5 stars simply because Marty, a Lutheran, had me disliking the guy at the end :-).It's a much more balanced biography, for example, than Here I Stand, which I read many years ago.Marty is an excellent writer. He uses words well, chooses good words, and doesn't waste them.Marty's writing is one of the highlights of the book. The book moves quickly, which is unusual for a biography.More than that, I think Marty provides a plausible, unifying theme to Luther's life.He was clearly not a fun guy.He was intense, fiercely competitive, short-tempered, "over the top".Unlike many religious biographies, this one portrays a man who was deeply flawed, who arguably never developed a satisfying relationship with God.To Luther, you either saw things exactly his way, or you were his enemy. If people had to die to get his
