The simplest method of resolving these conflicting spheres of power, and that used most commonly by the foremost empires of the past, is to consolidate all civil and ecclesiastical power in the hands of a single emporer. This was the method of ancient Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Israel , Rome, and many aboriginal societies. With the founding of America and the "new world" a laboratory was created whose alchemists were willing to experiment with a formula that was not in the research notebooks of the church-state past. This boldness of experimentation was gradual in America, as disparate colonies with several established churches were transformed over the course of a century to a single nation with a Constitution forbidding establishment. Separating the powers of church and state has been America's unique addition to history's search for the optimal arrangement of governmental power. It is probable that America would have never moved so forcefully to its radical stance of separating church and state had it not been for the life and work of Roger Williams and James Madison.

    Extractions: Williams made his professional debut at the Wigmore Hall in London on 6 Nov 1958, five months shy of his 18th birthday and completing his formal musical education. Highly successful debuts followed in Paris (1959), Madrid (1961) and in 1962 he had the rare privilege for a Western musician to tour the Soviet Union. Wherever he played, he was greeted with adulation. After two further successful recordings, 1963 brought a debut in Japan. He was then offered a recording contract with CBS Records (now Sony Classical) the first release, unimaginatively entitled CBS Presents John Williams being issued in 1964, in time for his US debut in New York on 6th December of that year. Williams has since released at least one new recording each year for the company, although less classical repertoire has also been issued by other labels and collaborations with Julian Bream by RCA. In 1964 he married for the first time, though this regrettably ended in divorce in 1969. His daughter Katy, born in 1965, is now a jazz pianist. John Williams the guitarist is not to be confused with John Williams, the American composer (John Towner Williams, born New York, 8 Feb 1932), who has written some of the most famous film soundtracks of the 20th century: Seven Years in Tibet; Towering Inferno; Jaws 1, 2, 3D, 4; Close Encounters of the Third Kind; Superman 1-4; Raiders of the Lost Ark; Star Wars 4, 5, 6, 1; ET;The Witches of Eastwick; JFK; ; Schindler's List; Jurassic Park 1, 2; Saving Private Ryan; Angela's Ashes; and many others.

    Extractions: John Williams should need little introduction since he is almost certainly the most well-known film composer, and possibly to many people the best-known composer, period. Born in New York, Williams started out doing television work composing for Irwin Allen shows like "Lost in Space", "Time Tunnel" and "Land of the Giants". His first brush with Hollywood was as a pianist. During the Golden Age of Hollywood Cinema, he worked as a pianist and arranger with film music luminaries such as Alfred Newman Franz Waxman Bernard Herrmann , and later Henry Mancini . With such exposure to the industry, and the encouragement of Newman in particular, Williams made the transition into film composition. Early steps in that direction found Williams again working for Irwin Allen, when he came to do a series of popular disaster movies including "The Poseidon Adventure" and "The Towering Inferno". One particular early success was his first Oscar (of five currently) for the incidental music to the successful musical "Fiddler on the Roof".
