   Extractions: This compilation is a good start if you haven't heard anything by John Williams and it provides a survey of his scores for Spielberg's films like Jaws, E.T., Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Schindler's List and so forth. If you are a Williams fan you've probably heard all of these titles before, but I must admit I have never felt satisfied with other peoples arrangements on other compilations than those of Williams himself. And on this album he again provides new, fresh and inspiring arrangements of his wonderful music and famous themes, which are never tiresome. Especially the several cues from Hook are much better than their original appearance on the OST. The only "fault" is the slow tempo on "Jim's New Life" from

Born in 1958, John Williams was taught to cook at his mother's knee and still remembers his first job - peeling tender, new Jersey potatoes. His father was a fisherman from North Shields on Tyneside so his interest in food was developed at the age of 10. His burgeoning interest in all things cuisine was further developed by attendance at cookery classes at school from the age of 13 - 16, after which he studied for his City and Guilds at South Shields College. He later attended Westminster College. He began his professional culinary career in August 1974 as commis chef at the Percy Arms Hotel, Otterburn before moving to the Royal Garden Hotel, Kensington as commis chef, working his way through the food and beverage operation until promoted to Chef de Cuisine in March 1982. In August 1984, John moved to the Restaurant Le Crocodile in Kensington as Chef Director before joining the distinguished Savoy Group of Hotels and Restaurants in November 1986 as Premier Sous-Chef at Claridge's. He moved to the Savoy Group property, The Berkeley for 18 months experience as Maitre Chef des Cuisines before returning to head the important post of Claridge's Maitre Chef des Cuisines.

    Extractions: [Global Village C 218 Jazz], cassette, Claude Williams and John Stewart Claude Williams, born in 1908, was only recently rediscovered as one of the very few remaining original masters of jazz violin. After being away from full time performing for over thirty years he was invited in 1987 to perform with the "Masters of the Folk Violin Tour," sponsored by the National Council for the Traditional Arts. This cassette, recorded after the tour, shows off his improvisational skills on a number of swing classics such as "Take the "A" Train," and "Cherokee" along with some fiddle blues, and a cover of "Over the Rainbow." John Stewart provides strong yet understated rhythmic support on guitar, in a way which highlights the creative playing of Williams. This recording is a must for the swing fiddle collector or player. Listeners who are unaccustomed to improvisational music and jazz may ask, "where's the melody?", but can rest assured that Williams states it at least once in every cut.
