Meyer details the intricate relationships between the operas and Euryanthe, and contemporary discourse on both the "Germany of the imagination" and the new nation itself. In so doing, he presents excerpts from a wide range of philosophical, political, and musical writings, many of which are little known and otherwise unavailable in English. Individual chapters trace the multidimensional concept of German and "foreign" opera through the 19th century. Meyer's study of places the work within the context of emerging German nationalism, and a chapter on Euryanthe addresses the opera's stylistic and topical shifts in light of changing cultural and aesthetic circumstances. As a result, Meyer argues that the search for a new German opera was not merely an aesthetic movement, but a political and social critique as well. Stephen C. Meyer

Weber, more than any composer before his time, realized the importance of the recitative and assigned to it an all-important role in the framework of his operas. He used the orchestra symphonically, making it the spine and backbone of the opera. Finally, he strove for (and to a certain extent realized) a unity of the arts in the Wagnerian sense. As he himself wrote about Euryanthe : ‘It is a purely dramatic work, which depends for its success solely on the cooperation of the sister arts, and is certain to lose its effect if deprived of their assistance.’" Now, what has this to do with chamber music? The answer is - very little, and, in fact, Weber composed very little chamber music. Excepting his works for solo instrument with piano accompaniment, of which there are six violin sonatas, Weber produced only three chamber music works - The Piano Quartet op 18 (1809) which he titled "Grand Quatour", the

In 1816 werd hij door de koning van Saksen naar Dresden geroepen, waar hij de leiding kreeg van de pas opgerichte Duitse opera, die hij tot grote bloei wist te brengen. In 1817 huwde hij de operazangeres Caroline Brandt (17941852). In Dresden schreef Weber vrijwel al zijn belangrijke werken en werd hij een zeer gevierd componist. In 1821 werden in Berlijn opgevoerd de opera's Preziosa (1821) en Der Freischütz (18171820; tekst Fr. Kind), welke laatste hem wereldberoemd maakte. Voor Wenen schreef hij (geheel zonder gesproken dialoog) de opera Euryanthe (18211823). In 1826 ging hij naar Londen om zijn voor het Covent Garden Theatre geschreven opera Oberon (18241826) te dirigeren, hoewel hij ernstig ziek was; vóór de terugreis overleed hij. Zijn stoffelijk overschot werd in 1844 mede door bemoeienis van R. Wagner naar Dresden overgebracht. Weber was de eerste nationaal-Duitse operacomponist. Hij gebruikte een volksliedachtig melos en streefde bewust naar een Duitse operastijl die de overheersing van de Italiaanse opera zou kunnen doorbreken. Van vele aria's maakte hij vrij gecomponeerde scènes die in de eerste plaats aan dramatische wetten gehoorzamen. Door consequente toepassing van leidmotieven, toonsoortensymboliek, een verzadigde en kleurrijke instrumentatie heeft hij de grondslagen gelegd voor het muziekdrama van Richard Wagner.
