There he systematically reorganized the theatre's operations and built up the nucleus of a German company, concentrating on works, mostly French, that offered an example for the development of a German operatic tradition. But his searching reforms (extending to scenery, lighting, orchestral seating, rehearsal schedules and salaries) led to resentment. Not until his appointment as Royal Saxon Kapellmeister at Dresden (1817) and the unprecedented triumph of (1821) in Berlin and throughout Germany did his championship of a true German opera win popular support. Official opposition continued, both from the Italian opera establishment in Dresden and from Spontini in Berlin; Weber answered critics with the grand heroic opera Euryanthe (1823, Vienna). His rapidly deteriorating health and his concem to provide for his family induced him to accept the invitation to write an English opera for London; he produced

He is best known for the operas Der Freischütz Euryanthe Oberon, King of the Fairies Silvana , and The Three Pintos He came from a family that had long been devoted to art. His father, Baron Franz Anton von Weber, a military officer in the service of the palgrave Karl Theodor, was an excellent violinist , and his mother once sang on the stage. His cousins, Josepha, Aloysia, Constanze and Sophie, daughters of Franz Anton's brother Fridolin, attained a high reputation as vocalists. Mozart , after having been rejected by Aloysia, married Constanze, and thus became Franz Anton's nephew by marriage. Fridolin played the violin nearly as well as his brother; and the whole family displayed exceptional talent for music.

Tuvo como profesor, entre otros, al compositor austriaco Michael Haydn, hermano de Josef Haydn. A la edad de 13 años Weber debutó como pianista y escribió su primera ópera. A la edad de 18 años se presentó como director con la ópera de Breslau. Posteriormente trabajó para la nobleza alemana, dirigió la ópera de Praga (a la que dio un nuevo impulso) y a partir de 1816 trabajó como director de la ópera de Dresde, famoso centro del repertorio italiano. Asimismo realizó numerosas giras como pianista. La fama de Weber se debe principalmente a tres óperas: El cazador furtivo (1821), Euryantha (1823) y Oberón (1826). Con El cazador furtivo, basada en el folclore nacional alemán y en una combinación de elementos legendarios y sobrenaturales, Weber creó la escuela romántica de ópera alemana. La ópera Oberón, que fue un encargo para el Covent Garden de Londres con un libreto inglés, obligó a Weber a estudiar esta lengua. Weber falleció en Londres el 5 de junio de 1826, poco tiempo después de estrenar esta ópera.
