Wood Prince, trustee of the Prince Charitable Trusts, announced today that Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Melinda Wagner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra will receive the Trusts' third Prince Prize for Commissioning Original Work, with an award of $75,000. The Prize will support the commission of a new concerto for piano and orchestra by Ms. Wagner, to be premiered by the CSO and soloist Emanuel Ax under the baton of CSO Music Director Daniel Barenboim as part of the Orchestra's 2002-2003 Symphony Center concert season. Launched in 1999, The Prince Prize is designed to encourage the creation of major new works of dance, theater, and music by mid-career artists and to showcase those works with performances by Chicago's premier arts organizations. This significant new three-year initiative was established to serve as a catalyst for creative collaboration between promising artists and the city's leading cultural institutions. "The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is most grateful to be the recipient of the this year's Prince Prize," said CSO Association President Henry Fogel. "The Prince Charitable Trusts are to be commended for the leadership and vision that they continue to demonstrate through this initiative-nurturing the creation of new works of art, supporting the careers of important emerging artists, and enabling Chicago audiences to be the first beneficiaries of these fruitful collaborations. I'm certain that this third Prince Prize project, bringing together Melinda Wagner, Emanuel Ax, Daniel Barenboim, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, will yield very exciting results."
