Extractions: Beth Anderson's Minnesota Swale, commissioned by the Minnesota Sinfonia in 1994, is performed in this recording by the Slovak Radio Symphony. Liner notes tell us that "a swale is a meadow or a marsh where a lot of wild plants grow together." This ten-minute work in one movement presents a chain of diverse musical ideas that follow one another in unbroken succession. A series of folk-like tunes for various solo instruments alternates with ensemble passages. The work's unhurried pace, spaciousness, and readily-grasped melodies make for pleasantly engaging listening. Janice Misurell-Mitchel's On Thin Ice, for guitar and flute, is a ten-minute workout for both instruments. Pitch content and form are secondary to the sheer diversity of extended instrumental techniques that keep the music interesting and moving. An improvised quality is felt through rhythmic separation of the lines; this also allows moments of simultaneity, such as at cadence points, to be doubly arresting. The work is impressively played by Caroline Pittman, flute, and Jeffery Kust, guitar. The composer's Sub-Music and Song, for solo flute (1983) was developed from an improvisation. The first section, Sub-Music, is filled with rough, jagged figures that eventually become more refined in the Song. The music flows from a knowledge of flute technique and could only have been written by a flute player. Once again, Caroline Pittman's performance displays exceptional skill.

Pierre Boulez is causing a ruckus in his new post as music director of the New York Philharmonic. Anthony Kelley, Melinda Wagner and Randall Woolf are doing their math homework, riding bikes, maybe practicing for their piano lessons. How has this all affected today's composers and made them unique from previous generations of composers? "There aren't so many ideologies'I'm gonna be this kind of composer doing this kind of thing,'" says New York composer Randall Woolf. "The world is so complicated now no one can be an expert in even these little fields. Whatever comes your way, you adapt as quickly as you can." Anthony Kelley, composer-in-residence for the Richmond Symphony, agrees. "There's less of schools and more of an individual impulse to create something." "When [composers like Crumb, Diamond and Perle] were coming up through the ranks, it was almost impossible to get an orchestral piece performed," says Philadelphia-born Melinda Wagner. "In the last 20 years, that's really changed.

Extractions: Many of us assume that Christian day schools foster a strict and conservative environment that is very different from the rest of the United States. Christian educators themselves foster this view when they say that following biblical strictures requires that they not always conform to this world. Melinda Wagner goes beyond this stereotype to portray the way these schools foster American popular culture and "professional education culture" as well as "Christian culture". In her participant observation study of a variety of Christian schools (sponsored by fundamentalist, evangelical, new charismatic, Holiness, and pentecostal Christians), Wagner describes and interprets how such compromises are made. In American culture, children are taught to meet challenges, to compete, and are rewarded for individual achievement. Conservative Christians label this individualism as "secular humanism," and find it antithetical to their view of the self. Instead, these Christians seek a culture of love, compassion, orderliness, noncompetitiveness, and separation from the material trappings of this world. But in reality, Wagner finds that the schools mix Christian values with the values of American culture. She discovers that even in Christian schools students compete fiercely and are recognized for individual achievements. Christian schools incorporate norms and strategies from mainstream American education. Alternative Christian schools are not as alternative as they could be; they are walking the Christian walk the American way.

Extractions: Radford University Bookstore Melinda Bollar Wagner Melinda Bollar Wagner is a professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Radford University. In addition to Metaphysics in Midwestern American and God's Schools, Choice and Compromise in American Society , she has contributed to many anthologies, written many articles and contributed to Radford's in-house publications. She received her PhD from the University of Michigan, and has taught at Radford since 1977. Also by Professor Wagner: God's Schools, Choice and Compromise in American Society The bulk of the literature on so-called nonmainstream contemporary religious groups leaves one with the impression that all of them are new, exist principally in California, and attract disaffected youth, and that they win their youthful adherents by providing a sense of community that otherwise is missing from their lives. There is, however, another type of group to be found among the "new" religions that remains largely unaccounted for in the literature and that has, for the most part, been ignored by investigators; and it is to one of these that Professor Wagner has devoted a year and a half of intense participant-observation research to produce an exacting and impressive study of a religious movement that is made up primarily of middle-aged members of the middle class to whom it provides not a sense of community, but a flexible "meaning" in a flexible and changing world. The object of Dr. Wagner's study, the Spiritual Frontiers Fellowship, has a membership of nearly eight thousand. It belongs, with such other groups as Theosophy, the Spiritualist church, and New Thought, to what has been labeled the American metaphysical movement-the term metaphysics being used to denote for adherents what they define as a practical religious philosophy that expresses and legitimates in the religious realm the individual autonomy that imbues every other aspect of American society and that is manifest in the Fellowship's insistence on individual exegesis on personal experience as the criterion of truth, and on the ultimate goal of self realization.
