David's first professional activity was as an organist, later he became known as one of the leading avante-garde pianists of our time. Tudor began working with John Cage in the early fifties, as a member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and with Cage's Project for Electronic Tape. Tudor has been affilated with the Merce Cunnigham Dance Company(MCDC) since its inception in the summer of 1953. In 2001 - the 75 th anniversary of his birth - it is appropriate for us to recall aspects of his music-making, his commitment to his own work, his far-flung travels, and the wide-ranging manifestations of his complex personality. This memoir documents certain events in the lives of David Tudor (1926-1996), John Cage (1912-1992), Carson D. Jeffries (1922-1995), and Lowell Cross (1938- ) from 1963 to 1980. David Tudor was the leading avant-garde pianist of the second half of the 20 th Century, even though he greatly limited his pianistic activities after the mid-1960s to concentrate on electronic music composition and performance. He joined Lowell Cross and Carson D. Jeffries in the development of video and laser art forms generated by music, including the presentation of the first laser light shows.

    Extractions: Variations II David Tudor had at least two careers. The first was as a performer of avant-garde music in the 1950s and 60s. The second was as a composer of music using live electronics. There is relatively little overlap in these careers; Tudor ceased performing other people's works about the same time in the mid-1960s that he began creating his own. And yet, so many of the performances he created in the later 1950s and onward involved electronics and amplification, that it would seem likely that the roots of his life as a composer are to be found here. This paper identifies and documents one case that confirms this theory. Here I will explain how Tudor created his performance of John Cage's composition Variations II , a realization that Tudor created for the amplified piano. Drawing upon original manuscript documents in the Tudor collection at the Getty Research Institute, I will show how this specific realization represents an emergence of Tudor's compositional voice, even as it continues his tradition as a performer of Cage's music.
