He received his training under Sweelinck, in Amsterdam. He was appointed organist of the Moritzkirche in 1608, and in 1620 he was made organist and choirmaster to the Margrave of Brandenburg, Christian Wilhelm. Scheidt achieved notoriety in his day as a composer of vocal works, but he also made important contributions in organ music. His greatest accomplishment was Tabulatura Nova (new tabulature), a three-volume work published in 1624. In it, Scheidt introduced our modern system of musical notation (staff notation). This quickly replaced tabulature as the standard notation method. Tabulatura Nova Contains: Fantasies, echo compositions, various liturgical pieces, Latin hymns, Magnificats, variations on German chorales, variations on secular songs.

He was instructed in music at the local Gymnasium, and by December 1604 had become organist at the Moritzkirche; he remained there until at least April 1607. In 16089 he took time off to study with Sweelinck in Amsterdam. By the end of 1609 he was back in Halle as court organist to the new administrator, Margrave Christian Wilhelm of Brandenburg, There Scheidt was responsible for playing the organ during services and providing secular keyboard music. In 1619 he opened a new organ at Bayreuth in the presence of many princes and musicians, including Praetorius and .Later, he was able to work with Praetorius, Kapellmeister in absentia, Kapellmeister , retaining his position as organist. Extractions: The German organist and composer Samuel Scheidt was born in Halle in 1587 and represents the first generation of German composers in the Baroque period. He was court Kapellmeister at Halle, first to the Margrave of Brandenburg, and then, when conditions allowed once more in the course of the Thirty Years War, to Duke August of Saxony. Church Music Scheidt wrote a large quantity of church music for the German Protestant liturgy. Latin compositions included settings of the Magnificat. Organ Music Scheidt's compositions for the organ include a number of pieces based on chorales. He also wrote fantasias, toccatas and dance movements for the instrument. Ensemble Music Scheidt also wrote a number of works for instrumental ensemble in various dance forms and published a volume of so-called Canons, suitable for a small group of instruments, demonstrating his skill in this aspect of the art of composition.
