After an earlier period in Italy he moved to Portugal and thence, in the service of the Infanta Maria Barbara to Madrid, after her marriage to the Spanish Infante. He remained in the service of Maria Barbara after her husband's accession to the throne and died in Madrid in 1757. He is chiefly known for the large number of short sonatas he wrote for the harpsichord, many of them for his royal pupil and patron. Keyboard Music Domenico Scarlatti wrote over 550 single-movement sonatas or 'Exercises' (Esercizi) for the harpsichord, making characteristic but innovative use of the instrument. The Queen also had pianos in her palaces, and some of the sonatas may have been written with these early hammer-action instruments in mind.Scarlatti's earlier compositions included operas, oratorios and other vocal music. He also wrote a relatively small number of sinfonias for instrumental ensemble. K. numbers are based on the catalogue of Scarlatti's sonatas compiled by the American harpsichordist, Ralph Kirkpatrick.     Extractions: D omenico Scarlatti was born in Italy in 1685, the same year as Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Frideric Handel. He moved to Portugal in 1719 to become music master to the young Princess Maria Barbara; when she became Queen of Spain in 1729, he followed her there. Respected as an extemporizer on the harpsichord, and for his dazzling technique, he did not begin to formally write his keyboard music down until 1738, when he was knighted by Portugal and composed a volume for presentation. A few years later, he collected a number of his older pieces into two more volumes. But then, ill health and gambling debts galvanised him into finding his voice. During his last 6 years 1752-7, he transferred his keyboard skill to paper in the form of some two hundred suites which he called sonatas. They combine pure joyous harpsichord sounds with the taut rhythms of Spanish dance and the harmonic brilliance of his Italian heritage to a degree that places him among the greatest musicians of all time. Download the Recordings is the music , in the original 16 volume binding, is preserved in the Biblioteca Marciana in Venice, Italy. 545 of the sonatas were transcribed for piano by Alessandro Longo in 1906, and are still available from Ricordi (Italy) and Kalmus (USA). I thank Mark Newbold for generously making Ralph Kirkpatrick's facsimile of the sonatas not published by Longo available to me.

    Extractions: He was the son of Alessandro Scarlatti . In 1701 he was appointed organist and composer of the vice-regal court at Naples, where his father was Maestro di cappella. The following year he took leave of absence and travelled with the family to Florence where Alessandro hoped for employment from Prince Ferdinando de' Medici. When this was not forthcoming Domenico returned to Naples, where he tried his hand at opera before his father removed him in 1705 and sent him to Venice to try his luck there. It may have been in Venice that he first met Handel , with whom he formed a strong attachment. By 1707, however, Scarlatti was in Rome, assisting his father at San Maria Maggiore, and he remained in Rome for over 12 years, occupying posts as maestro to the dowager Queen of Poland from 1711, to the Marquis de Fontes from 1714, and at St. Peter's Church. He thus provided music for both sacred and secular employers, but he was unable to free himself from a domineering father until he obtained legal independence in January 1717. In 1719 Scarlatti resigned his positions in Rome and apparently spent some years in Palermo before taking up his next post, as mestre of the Portuguese court in Lisbon.

Nothing is known of his musical training; while he profited from the study of compositions by Gasparini , Greco, Pasquini , and the elder Scarlatti, it is not certain that any of them were his actual teachers. His name does not appear on any conservatory rosters. On September 13, 1701, he was appointed organista e compositore di musica of the Naples royal chapel, of which his father was maestro. What the younger Scarlatti's official duties were remains obscure, and none of his compositions from the period of his employment at the Neapolitan court appear to be extant. In 1702 father and son left for Florence on a four-month leave of absence. There Domenico may have met the keyboard instrument maker Bartolomeo Cristofori, who was then experimenting with the hammer action of his gravicembalo col piano e forte. Alessandro soon left for Rome, while Domenico returned to Naples and assumed his father's duties there for the 1703-4 season. Two operas, L'Ottavia ristituita al trono and Il Giustino (both 1703), probably marked the 18-year-old's debut as an opera composer. But any hopes Alessandro may have had that his son would succeed him as

Domenico's employment took him to royal courts and chapels in Naples (1701), Rome (1709), Lisbon (1720) and Spain (1729). In 1708 Handel met Domenico in Italy and the two traveled together to Rome where Cardinal Ottoboni arranged a friendly competition. With respect to the harpsichord it was ruled that the two were equal, but, on the organ, Domenico quickly acknowledged his rival's superiority. The two remained good friends until Domenico's death. Scarlatti was the first composer to explore the free style of playing the harpsichord (he composed over 600 sonatas for that instrument); in addition, he wrote operas oratorios cantatas , and other sacred works.

His father, uncle Francesco, and brother Pietro were all composers and young Domenico’s musical talents soon led him in this direction. By the age of fifteen, he was appointed organist and composer of Cappella Reale in Naples. Even with such early success, there existed considerable tension between Domenico and his father, an authoritarian figure who set out to micro-manage his son’s early musical career. Scarlatti eventually settled in Venice, where he became well known for his astounding virtuosity on the harpsichord. A testament to this fact lies in a youthful harpsichord duel with Handel that was perceived a draw. Moving to Rome, Scarlatti worked for Maria Casimira, the exiled queen of Poland, before departing to the Cappella Guila in 1714. There, he concentrated on composing sacred works, the most memorable of these being his Stabat Mater for 10 voices. It was here that Scarlatti made an important connection with Marquis de Fontes, the Portuguese ambassador, that would dramatically alter the course of his life.

It is probable that Scarlatti first studied under his father, Alessandro Scarlatti , before becoming a pupil of Gaetano Greco. In 1704, he remodelled Pollaroli's Irene for performance at Naples. Soon after this his father sent him to Venice, where he studied under Gasparini, and met Thomas Roseingrave who would later make the first English edition of Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas. Domenico was already a harpsichord-player of eminence, and there is a story that at a trial of skill with George Friderich Handel at the palace of Cardinal Ottoboni in Rome he was adjudged his equal on that instrument, although inferior on the organ. In 1709, Domenico entered the service of Marie Casimire, queen of Poland, then living in Rome, and composed several operas for her private theatre.
