   Extractions: He studied the violin with his brother Francesco and the harpsichord and the organ with Simoni, an organist of the town village. At the age of 15 he went to Venice under the patronage of the Mocenigo family: he studied singing with Pacini and composition with Pescetti. There he met L. Gassman, a chapel-master, who brought him to Wien , took care of him and gave him a good musical and literary education. He travelled a lot, for example he was in Milan where he partecipated in the opening of the Theatre Alla Scala (1778) with the work "Europa Riconosciuta". Owing to the collaboration with the musician Gluck he composed his masterpiece "Les Danaides" (1784). In 1788 he succeeded to Bonno as chapel-master. He was President of the Tonkunstler Societat (a society of musicians' widows and orphans founded by Gassman in 1771) until 1818.

After becoming orphaned in 1765, he was taken to Venice, where he studied thoroughbass with Giovanni Pescetti, the deputy maestro di cappella of St. Mark's, and singing with Ferdinando Pacini, a tenor there. In 1766 Florian Gassmann took him to Vienna, where he continued his studies and met Metastasio and Gluck . There his Armida (1771) was a great success. After Gassmann's death in 1774, Salieri became court composer and conductor of the Italian opera; in 1788 he succeeded Giuseppe Bonno as court Kapellmeister. Tarare (1787); the opera was subsequently recomposed and the libretto translated by Da Ponte for a 1788 production at the Vienna Burgtheater under the title Axur Re d'Ormus. From 1788 to 1804 Salieri wrote sixteen operas, of which only Palmira, Regina di Persia (1795) had international success. He cited a distaste with modern trends for his abandonment of dramatic music after 1804. After the death of Joseph II in 1790, he successfully petitioned Leopold II for his release from the direction of the opera, although he retained his post as court Kapellmeister.

He studied with Gassmann and others in Vienna, and also knew Gluck (who became his patron) and Metastasio. In 1774 he succeeded Gassmann as court composer and conductor of the Italian opera; from 1788 he was also court Kapellmeister. He made his reputation as a stage composer, writing operas for Vienna from 1768 and presenting several in Italy, 1778-80. Later he dominated Parisian opera with three works of 1784-7; Tarare (1787), his greatest success, established him as Gluck's heir. In 1790 he gave up his duties at the Italian opera. As his style became old-fashioned his works lost favour, and he composed relatively little after 1804, but he remained a central and influential figure in Viennese musical Iife. His many pupils included Beethoven Schubert and Liszt . There is little evidence of any intrigues against Mozart , still less of the charge of poisoning.

Antonio Salieri occupied a position of great importance in the music of Vienna. From 1774 he was court composer and conductor of the Italian opera, serving as court Kapellmeister from 1788 until 1824. Born in Legnago, he was brought as a boy to Vienna by Florian Gassmann, his predecessor as court Kapellmeister who supervised his musical training and education. He owed much to the influence and patronage of Gluck, to whom he seemed a natural successor in the field of opera. He won similar success to the latter also in Paris with his operas for the French stage. His pupils included Beethoven and Schubert, Czerny, Hummel, Moscheles and one of Mozart's sons. Antonio Salieri erwies sich als begabter Dirigent und leitete die Proben für Opernaufführungen am Hoftheater. Dabei erwarb er sich die Gunst eines weiteren Förderers, Christoph Willibald Gluck. Mit 20 Jahren komponierte Salieri seine erste Opera buffa mit dem Titel Le donne letterate Nach seinen ersten Erfolgen in Wien zog es ihn kurzzeitig zurück nach Italien. Dort erhielt er 1778 den Auftrag, mit der Opera seria L'Europa riconosciuta die erste Spielzeit der gerade erbauten Mailänder Scala zu eröffnen. Nach seiner Rückkehr aus Italien beauftragte ihn Joseph II. mit der Komposition eines Singspiels ( Der Rauchfangkehrer , 1781) für seine Abteilung "Teutsches Singspiel" am Burgtheater.

As the Salians, however, were the victorious race, the law acquired an authority in excess of the other barbarian laws, and in the additions made to the Ripuarian, Lombard, and other allied laws, the Carolingians endeavoured to bring these laws into harmony with the Salic Law. Moreover, many persons, even of foreign race, declared themselves willing to live under the Salic Law. The principle of personality, however, gradually gave way to that of territoriality; and in every district, at least north of the Loire, customs were formed in which were combined in varying proportions Roman law, ecclesiastical law and the various Germanic laws. So late as the 10th and 11th centuries we find certain texts invoking the Salic Law, but only in a vague and general way; and it would be rash to conclude from this that the Salic Law was still in force. The Lex Ripuaria was the law of the Ripuarian Franks, who dwelt between the Meuse and the Rhine, and whose centre was Cologne. We have no ancient MSS. of the law of the Ripuarians; the 35 MSS. we possess, as well as those now lost which served as the basis of the old editions, do not go back beyond the time of Charlemagne (end of 8th century and 9th century). In all these MSS. the text is identical, but it is a revised text—in other words, we have only a lex emend ala. There is an edition of the text of the Ripuarian Law in Mon. Gee. hist. Leges (1883), v. 185 seq. by R. Sohm, who also brought out a separate edition in 1885 for the use of schools. Kurz nach seinem 50jährigen Jubiläum im Wiener Hofdienst starb er am 7. Mai . Bei der Beerdigungsfeier wurde sein eigenes Requiem gespielt. Er war in Wien Lehrer von Beethoven , Schubert und Liszt.
