Extractions: October 15, 1952 in Helsinki, Finland Before starting studying music, Kaija Saariaho studied visual arts at the University of Industrial Arts in Helsinki. From 1976-1981 she studied composition with Paavo Heininen at the Sibelius Academy and from 1981-1982 with Brian Ferneyhough and Klaus Huber at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg. In 1982 she followed courses in computer music at Ircam in Paris, where she has been living and working since then. Several of her compositions were awarded a.o. Stilleben (Prix Italia 1988, Ars Electronica prize 1989), Io (Ars Electronica prize 1989) and Lonh (The Nordic Music Prize 2000). Sensitive, colourful, refreshing and modernist. All of these words might come up, listening to Kaija Saariaho's music. The titles of her pieces provoke strong associations, but the music never is a simplistic interpretation of it. The use of tape and live electronics is frequent and adds to the hyper-sensitive character of the music.

Extractions: Kaija Saariaho's first opera, "L'Amour de lion" (Love From Afar), which had its American premiere at the Santa Fe Opera in 2002, presents a distinctive musical voice in a theatrical context. One leaves the performance thinking not about the set, the story, or the characters, compelling as those are, but hearing the echoes of this extraordinary haunting score. For once, music is really the main event. The Wall Street Journal
