Extractions: In my review, elsewhere on this site, of a French language version of Mozart's Figaro Rossini's La Petite Messe Solennelle , one of his few late works, was written in 1864, (twenty five years after his last stage work , Guillaume Tell ) for the consecration of the Chapel at the home of his friend Countess Pillet-Will. The word 'petite' does not refer to the works size, but rather the composers evaluation of its importance. In an introductory note to 'le bon Dieu' he referred to it as 'the last mortal Sin of my Old Age' . Despite such thoughts, claiming that if he didn't do it himself somebody else would, Rossini orchestrated the work in 1867.

Extractions: Italian composer, the most successful operatic composer of his time. He was outstanding in his comic opera and was one of the three great 19th-century exponents of the bel canto style, which emphasizes beauty of melodic line, rather than excessive drama and emotion. Born February 29, 1792, at Pesaro and trained at the Conservatorio de Bologna, Rossini composed 37 operas, beginning with Demetrio e Polibio (1806) and ending with William Tell (1829). His first wife was the Spanish soprano Isabella Colbran, who sang in several of his early operas. Rossini's most successful opera, and the only one that remains in the permanent repertoire, is The Barber of Seville, produced in Rome in 1816. Of his other operas, those most frequently and successfully revived today are L'Italiana in Algeri (The Italian Girl in Algiers, 1813), Il Turco in Italia (The Turk in Italy, 1814), La Cenerentola (Cinderella, 1817), Semiramide (1823), and Le Comte Ory (Count Ory, 1828). After 1831, Rossini composed no further operas and during the rest of his life produced only one important work, the Stabat Mater of 1842. Despite his long retirement, he remained one of the great personages of the musical world. He died in Passy, on November 13, 1868. Rossini's operas were the last and best in the Italian opera buffa, or comic opera, style. Typically light and lively, their music is notable for its high degree of comic characterization. Rossini used the highly artistic bel canto style to fashion bright melodies, which the singers could deliver with brilliant effects and stirring expression.

Extractions: Both his parents were musicians, his father a horn player, his mother a singer; he learnt the horn and singing and as a boy sang in at least one opera in Bologna, where the family lived. He studied there and began his operatic career when, at 18, he wrote a one-act comedy for Venice. Further commissions followed, from Bologna, Ferrara, Venice again and Milan, where "La pietra del paragone" was a success at La Scala in1812. This was one of seven operas written in 16 months, all but one of them comic. Rossini's most important operas in the period that followed were for Naples. The third act of his "Otello" (1816), with its strong unitary structure, marks his maturity as a musical dramatist. The Neapolitan operas, even though much dependent on solo singing of a highly florid kind (to the extent that numbers could be, and have been, interchanged), show an enormous expansion of musical means, with more and longer ensembles and the chorus an active participant; the accompanied recitative is more dramatic and the orchestra is given greater prominence. Rossini also abandoned traditional overtures, probably in order to involve his audiences in the drama from the outset. In Naples the leading soprano was Isabella Colbran, mistress of the impresario, Barbaia. She transferred her allegiance to Rossini, who in 1822 married her; they were not long happy together. Among the masterpieces from this period are "Maometto II" (1820) and, written for Venice at the end of his time in Naples, "Semiramide" (1823). Barbaia gave a Viennese season in 1822; Rossini and his wife returned to Bologna, then in 1823 left for London and Paris where he took on the directorship of the Théâtre-ltalien, composing for that theatre and the Opéra. Some of his Paris works are adaptations ("Le siège de Corinthe" and "Moïse et Pharaon"); the "opéra comique Le Comte Ory" is part-new, "Guillaume Tell" wholly. This last, widely regarded as his "chef d'oeuvre," and very long, is a rich tapestry of his most inspired music, with elaborate orchestration, many ensembles, spectacular ballets and processions in the French tradition, opulent orchestral writing and showing a new harmonic boldness.

Extractions: Cinderella La Cenerentola in Italian), another popular opera, was written by Rossini in about three weeks in 1817. It is unusual because Cinderella is played by a contralto (low-voiced woman) rather than a soprano (high-voiced woman). Rossini cleverly changed the type of song Cinderella sings to show her rise from serving girl to princess. Her first aria is simple, but after she tries on the glass slipper, she sings a much fancier aria.
