Extractions: The composer, pianist, and conductor Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff is considered the last in the great tradition of Russian romantic composers. He was born Apr. 1 (N.S.), 1873, at his family's estate, Semyonovo, in the Russian province of Novgorod. At about the age of 5, he began piano studies with his mother. In 1882 he entered the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, but he transferred 3 years later to the Moscow Conservatory. There he studied under the rigorous supervision of Nikolai Zverev, through whom he met many of the most important Russian composers of the time. Tchaikovsky , especially, exercised a major influence on him. He graduated in piano in 1891 and in composition with the Great Gold Medal in 1892.

His father and grandfather were already very good amateur pianists, thus Sergei followed in their footsteps, as he began piano lessons at a very young age. Although he was born with that musical exposure, he was expected to go on to military school for a career there. At the age of nine, Rachmaninoff traveled to St. Petersburg due to his father's ill judgement with money, as he lost the family fortune. There, Sergei entered as a scholarship student at the conservatory. However, Rachmaninoff was not a good student, as he often cut class and wandered about the grand city, sometimes even spending his time at the skating rink. His grandmother always took him to church services, where he admired the singing and the tolling of the bells. Even though he deeply enjoyed music, his teachers foresaw no such relation for him with music. Later, however, when he entered the Moscow conservatory at fifteen, he discovered new horizons when he added composition to his piano playing. At Moscow, Rachmaninoff lived at the home of his teacher, the great Nicolai Zverev, who supervised every detail of his students' lives. There, Rachmaninoff met and played for many giant figures of Russia, including Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky , who became his musical idol.

With this foundation of instability and being unasved, Rachmoninoff had a hard time adjusting to life as a young man. His extrodinary talent as a pianist is what brought him fame that no doubt would not have existed otherwise. After various failures and successes in his training years, Sergei Rachmaninoff wrote his First Symphony in 1895. It was met with severe criticism which brought on "the composer's worst crisis of psychic distress and lethargy..." (1). He thus entered a time when he could neither write nor play music. He was then persuaded to visit a certain Dr. Nikolai Dahl, specialized in hypnosis. In 1900, from January to April, Rachmaninoff daily "visited the doctor's somberly velvet-draped chambers. From the quiet, Dahl would repeat over and over: 'You will begin to write...you will work with great facility...the music you write will be good music.' "(1) What this produced was Rachmaninoff's famous Second Piano Concerto . Rachmaninoff said later, "Although it sounds incredible, this cure really helped me. I began to write..new musical ideas began to stir within me - far more than I needed for my concerto."(1)

He was born in Oneg (near Novgorod) on April 1, 1873 and he died in Beverly Hills on March 28, 1943. Until the death of his friend Scriabin, Rachmaninoff had only played his own music in recitals. After Scriabin died in 1915, Rachmaninoff played his friend's music at a series of recitals, but in a completely different style from Scriabin. Many were outraged, but a young Prokofiev came backstage and told Rachmaninoff that he played very well. Rachmaninoff asked: "And you thought I'd play badly?" After that Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev didn't speak for years. Rachmaninoff was an early wunderkind - he entered the Moscow conservatory when he was 14. He won medals for his piano playing, and he was very serious about composition early in his life. During preparations for performance of the students' final projects, the professor in charge freely cut and altered the students' compositions, but Rachaminoff not only refused to make any changes, he even had the nerve to point out the errors in the professor's conducting. In 1892 he wrote the famous Prelude in C-sharp minor. There is a story that the reason this prelude became so popular is because Rachmaninoff forgot to copywright it, so all the publishers had a field day with it. His first symphony, on the other hand, was very badly received. Afterwards he could not write any music for three years. He was treated by a hypnotic specialist, Dr. Nikolai Dahl, who repeated over and over: "You will write your concerto... You will write your concerto... You will work with great facility... The concerto will be of excellent quality." Rachmaninoff did write a concerto, finishing it in 1901, and it became his most popular work. In the years before World War I Rachmaninoff wrote many excellent songs, including Vocalise, and extremely challenging piano piece, "tailored to his own spectacular hands."

Afterwards, he visited America once every season. Rachmaninoff died on March 28, 1943 only a few weeks after attaining his American citizenship, and only five days before his seventieth birthday.
