Rejecting the orthodoxies of British modernism, Nyman had abandoned composition in 1964, working instead as a musicologist, editing Purcell and Handel, and collecting folk music in Romania. Later he became a music critic, in which capacity he was the first to apply the word "mimimalism" to music, in a 1968 review for the Spectator of Cornelius Cardew's The Great Digest. That same year, a chance encounter with a BBC broadcast of Steve Reich's Come Out opened his ears to further possibilities. A route back to composition was emerging. He wrote the libretto for Harrison Birtwistle's 1969 "dramatic pastoral" Down by the Greenwood Side. In 1977, Birtwistle, by now Musical Director of the National Theatre, commissioned him to provide arrangements of 18th century Venetian songs for the production of Carlo Goldoni's play Il Campiello

A band needs repertoire, and Nyman set about providing it, beginning with In Re Don Giovanni, a characteristic treatment of 16 bars of Mozart. The band's line-up mutated, amplification was added and the name changed to the Michael Nyman Band. This is the laboratory in which Nyman has formulated his compositional style around strong melodies, flexible yet assertive rhythms, and precisely articulated ensemble playing.

Extractions: Michael Nyman followed a traditional music education at the Royal Academy of Music and King's College London. Apparently turning his back on Classical Music traditions, he spent some time collecting examples of Romanian Folk Music before moving behind the scenes to work as a musicologist and critic. It was as a music critic that he first applied the term "minimalism" to Cornelius Cardew's work "The Great Digest" in The Spectator. This was just one expression of his interest in Experimental Classical Music which culminated in his writing the book "Experimental Music, Cage and beyond". Referring to the work of John Cage and others (with a foreword by Brian Eno and covering some of the work of Philip Glass ) this is now held as a definitive reference work for this movement during its most significant period of evolution in the 1950s and 1960s. Extractions: I had to establish not only the usual repertoire of music for a film, but a specific repertoire of piano music that would have been Ada's repertoire as a pianist. I began creating her a folio of material that I imagined she had in her head, that her fingers carried around with her, almost as if she had been the composer of it. It had to be a 'possible' mid-nineteenth century music but not pastiche and obviously written in 1992. - Michael Nyman - Initially I was unsure as to how precisely to pitch the style. But once I had the perception tyhat since Ada was from Scotland, it was logical to use Scottish folk and popular songs as the basis or our music. Once I hit on that idea everything fell into place. It's as though I had to write the music of another composer who happened to live in Scotland, then New Zealand in the mid-eighteen fifties. Someone who was obviously not a professional composer or pianist, so there had to be a modesty to it. Except that Holly Hunter played Ada playing the piano wirth enormous dedication and intensity. Since Ada doesn't speak the piano music doesn't simply have the usual expressive role, but becomes a substitute for her voice. The sound of the piano becomes her character, her mood, her expressions, her unspoken dialogue, her body language. It has to conveyn the messages she is putting across about her feelings toward Baines during the piano lessons, and these differ from lesson to lesson as the relationship, the state of sexual bargaining and passion, develop. I've had to create a kind of aural scenography which is as important as the costumes. Ada's music is described by one of the characters in the film as "like a mood that passes through you... a sound that creeps into you".
