(Charles Baudelaire) The title of the work derives from a number of cycles known as the `spleen' poems in Charles Baudelaire's Fleurs du Mal. In one of these cycles, Spleen et ideal, Baudelaire sets the power of memory (ideal) against the inexorable beat of time (spleen): The present work in a single movement, is constructed around various predetermined states of continuity and discontinuity (types of action combined with limits of activity). From these states are derived musical processes, some of which are in a condition of continuous variation, other frozen by cyclic constraints - both conditions separated by the `violence of an incision' (what Lacan calls `la coupure' - between different orders of discourse), correspond as a discursive edge(iness). It is the energy, the impact of `the cut' that defines temporality in Spleen - `something' that hovers around an event when the `passing' moment in a state of fragility is rendered papable. This `something' is no abstraction but is as concrete as the chill of the `snow's measureless fall'. Spleen is dedicated to Michael Finnissy, and was first performed by him on 9th December 1980 in London.

In the following year, "Crossing Over" was selected for performance at the International Young Composers Forum in Warsaw, and the LaRochelle Festival presented four of Dillon's works, including "Sgothan," which was commissioned by the French Ministry of Culture for the flautist Pierre-Yves Artaud, and the "First String Quartet" was performed at the ISCM World Music Days in Toronto. In addition to "windows and Canopies," several other works were performed in Paris during 1985, at IRCAM , the Centre Georges Pompidou and Radio France. In the same year, Dillon was a member of the selection committee for the International Gaudmeamus Music Week in Amsterdam, and "...Once Upon a Time" was presented at the Venice Biennale. Further European performances in 1986 and 1987 confirmed the growing interest throughout Europe in Dillon's music. In 1986, Dillon was guest lecturer at the State University of New York in Stony Brook and spent the summer engaged in computer music research at IRCAM in Paris. For the academic years 1986-87 and 1989-90, he was a part-time lecturer in Composition at Goldsmiths' College, University of London. The premiere of his first large orchestral work, "helle Nacht," commissioned by the BBC for the Scottish National Orchestra, was given at the 1987 Musica Nova festival in Glasgow and was subsequently performed at the Helsinki Biennale (1989) and in Strasbourg (1991).

Extractions: James Dillon was born in Glasgow on 29 October 1950, and his music has been published by Peters Edition since 1982. In that year, Parjanya-Vata, for solo cello, won the Kransichsteiner Musikpreis at the Darmstadt Ferienkurse für Neue Musik. The work's Sanskrit title refers to the ancient Vedic hymns in which parjanya and vata are the personifications of rain and wind. Dillon studied Indian music during the early 1970s with Punita Gupta, and some of the rhythmic techniques that he encountered are referred to in Ti.re-Ti.ke-Dha, for solo percussionist. Dillon was re-invited by Darmstadt to present new works throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. In 1983, the First String Quartet received its premiere from the Arditti Quartet at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. The Arditti Quartet has remained closely involved with the composer, having premiered and widely performed all of Dillon's subsequent quartets, and Huddersfield is one of the many festivals to feature Dillon's music. It mounted a large-scale retrospective in 1995.
