Leonarda Records Composer Bios Women Composers: The Lost Tradition Found MEDIEVAL THROUGH CLASSICAL Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1170) (Germany), a unique and extraordinary woman by any century's measure, wrote books on natural science, theology and medicine and the first morality play set to music. She composed a large collection of religious music, Symphonia armonie celestium revelationum (Symphony of the harmony of celestial revelation). Noble by birth, her resources probably helped her to found her own Order in Germany, and she earned the respect of kings, emperors and churchmen. The title of her collection, "Symphonia," refers, in addition to its more general musical meaning, to the medieval style hurdy-gurdy called a symphonia, used in this performance of Ierusalem.

Extractions: Five Centuries of Song Anne Boleyn's (1507-1536) father attained a high position under the young Henry VIII and spent several years as Ambassador to France. Anne lived at the French court from age 12-16. We know she was trained in music and dancing, owned a virginals, (a keyboard instrument similar in sound to a harpsichord), and played the lute. She had an excellent reputation as a composer and performer. She was the second wife of King Henry VIII and was the mother of Elizabeth I. This song is said to have been written by her when she was in the Tower of London facing execution for treason (though her only crime was probably her failure to produce a male heir). O Death, rock me asleep (attributed) (voice and harpsichord) Caterina Assandra Jubilate Deo (voice and harpsichord) Francesca Caccini Maria, dolce Maria (voice and harpsichord). Last published in 1664) composed some of the most extraordinary music of the 17th century and was considered the best singer and lute player in Venice. She was probably the illegitimate daughter of the poet Giulio Strozzi, who adopted her when she was nine. He saw to it that she received the best musical education and encouraged her to compose, publish and perform. The Strozzi home was the meeting place for groups of highly educated men who met to discuss the arts and sciences, which greatly influenced Barbara's development. One group in which she was particularly interested was the

Scores, texts, and translations, where available, have been placed on reserve. Course Objectives Approach and philosophy. This course assumes that you have developed significant knowledge of the history of musical style, as well as skill in music analysis. The emphasis here, then, will be cultural, historiographical, critical, and interpretive, rather than positivistic. A number of the readings will be controversial. You will be expected to engage all readings (whether or not you agree with their viewpoints) with a critical eye, attending not only to the overt arguments, but to the assumptions on which the arguments rest, the language used, and the type of evidence brought to bear on the arguments. You are entitled to your own opinions; there is no penalty for having a viewpoint different from that of the author of the reading, the rest of the class, or the professor. However, you will be expected to apply to your own opinions the same scrutiny you apply to others'. You will also be expected to show respect to others in the class at all times.

The Classical Music Guide - Alan Rich: MUSEUM PIECES Its composer was francesca caccini, the daughter of Giulio cacciniand an acclaimed composer and performer in her own right. Giulio http://www.classicalmusicguide.com/aalley/aa_museumpieces.htm
Extractions: by: Alan Rich It doesn't matter that the Getty Center's Harold M. Williams Auditorium is in itself a conventional space reminiscent of everybody's high school assembly hall. It acquires its magic through proximity, the presence nearby of rooms full of Renaissance stained glass or seventeenth-century drawings. Hearing music in that room, however drab, plays upon our memories of having just come from those other rooms; it engenders a higher stage of fulfillment than merely seeing or merely hearing. There ought to be laws mandating that kind of surrounding for all musical events so that, for example, we could sail up to this week's Peter Grimes Late last month Greg Maldonado's Los Angeles Baroque Orchestra, one of our two splendid early-music ensembles, performed a fine program of music, mostly unfamiliar and chosen with high imagination, from the early seventeenth century, the time of Peter Paul Rubens and his Flemish contemporaries, whose drawings filled a nearby room. It was one of those experiences when you could easily forget where one sense left off and the other took over. The drawings, vivid in line and color, have that element of lustiness that comes easily in cold climates (think of Breughel as immediate ancestor). The music, as some of the new thinking about dissonance and dramatic passion had begun to spread northward from Florence, where composers were busily inventing opera, also had some remarkable twists and turns that might have sent the previous generation of composers to an early grave. The one well-known work on the program, the
