    Extractions: prev. table next William Byrd (1543-1623) According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music , William Byrd was an English composer; organist at Lincoln Cathedral, 1953, of the Chapel Royal (jointly with Tallis), 1572. Jointly with Tallis, held from Queen Elisabeth a monopoly of music-printing. Roman Catholic; composed for both his own and the Anglican Church. Works, mainly in a serious vein and mainly church music, include Masses for 4, 4 and 5 voices; 5 Anglican services; also madrigals, rounds, and other secular vocal music, many pieces for keyboard, and fancies etc. for viols.
