Un vero capolavoro di dolcezza e dinamica per questa opera di "punta" del grande compositore tedesco. Nei dialetti tedeschi del nord Brahm significa "ginestra", la famiglia Brahms proveniva, infatti, dalla bassa Sassonia. Figlio di un musicista ambulante di talento, Johann Jakob Brahms, capace di suonare il violino, la viola, il violoncello, il contrabbasso, il flauto ed il corno che viene chiamato ad Amburgo nel 1826 all'età di venti anni ed assunto come cornista nella banda municipale. A causa del basso salario Johann Jakob fu costretto a vivere nei quartieri poveri di Amburgo, presso la chiesa di San Michele. Qui intrecciò una relazione con una donna assai più anziana di lui; Johanna Enrika Christiane Nissen con evidenti problemi fisici (era zoppa, nana ma con qualche soldo da parte). La sposò il 9 giugno del 1830 perché la relazione era divenuta oramai scandalo. Nel 1831 nasce il loro primogenito Wilhelmine Luise Elisabeth. Il 7 maggio 1833 nasce Johannes e nel 1835 l'ultimo figlio Fritz, anche questi musicista.

His early compositions continued in the progressive direction of the waning romanticism: huge sonatas piano trios , and other works like the Piano Quartet in G minor , for the finale of which Brahms utilizes a flashy gypsy melody. But Brahms later abandoned this track, devoting himself instead to synthesizing the Classical forms with the almost by now forgotten early Romanticism , with its slowly unraveling sense of tonality. In so doing, Brahms created a repertoire of works that amounts to a glowing and majestic apotheosis of the musical traditions of the nineteenth-century.

He, more than any other composer of the second half of the 19th century, was responsible for reviving what is called "absolute" music - compositions to be accepted on their own terms as interplays of sound rather than program music, or music which tells a story or represents actual objects, places, or events. The invective between he and Richard Wagner - whose Gesamtkunstwerk , or integrated work of art, was diametrically opposed to Brahms' musical philosophy - was a much-publicized intellectual romp in its day. Brahms was a master of the compositional craft. He often used established techniques, such as counterpoint, but masterfully wedded these delicate classical devices with the passion of romanticism.
