Extractions: Woldemar Bargiel was the son of Marianne Tromlitz, first wife of Friedrich Wieck and mother of Clara Schumann and was taught by Moscheles and Niels W. Gade in Leipzig, before returning to his native Berlin, where he was later appointed professor of composition at the invitation of Joachim. His father, Adolph Bargiel (1783-1841) was a teacher for piano and singing in the same city and his mother, Marianne Bargiel (her maiden name was Tromlitz, 1797-1872) was a pianist and singer. Her grandfather was a famous flute-virtuoso: Johann Georg Tromlitz (1725-1805) . Adolph Bargiel was Marianne's second husband, she was married to Friedrich Wieck (1785-1873) before and she is also the mother of Clara Wieck, better known as Clara Schumann (1819-1896) after her marriage to Robert Schumann (1810-1856). everal years later, in 1859, Bargiel was offered a post as a teacher for piano and theory at the Cologne Conservatory by Ferdinand Hiller, a friend of Felix Mendelssohn. Bargiel remained in Cologne until 1865 when he went to the Netherlands. In Rotterdam he was appointed as the director of the Maatschappij tot bevordering der toonkunst. This was a very attractive position because Bargiel was able to work as a conductor and choir director at the same time. It was also in Rotterdam where he met Hermine Tours - and both got married. In 1874 Bargiel had to move again, this time back to Berlin. Joseph Joachim, the founder and director of the Berlin Music Academy offered Bargiel to teach composition at his academy. Bargiel took this post because it was good for his career. His friendship to Joachim might have been an additional reason - Joachim and Bargiel had been students together in Leipzig.
