It is commonly known by the abbreviation BWV. A new catalogue of Bach's work, the Bach=Compendium (4 vols. to date, Leipzig: Peters, 1983-89) employs a categorical numbering system with additional numbers for individual works. It is currently in preparation by Christoph Wolff and Hans Joachim Schulze. Categories are represented by letters. Thus where E=masses, E 2 is the B-Minor Mass of 1733. The existing volumes of the Compendium cover the vocal music of Bach; we await the completion of the volumes covering instrumental music before adding this reference information to our files.

Bach, Johann Sebastian Biography johann sebastian bach Composer Germany Born 21 Mar 1685 Died 28 Jul1750 bach combined the talents of composer, innovator, and organist. http://www.artsworld.com/music-dance/biographies/a-c/johann-sebastian-bach.html
Extractions: Bach combined the talents of composer, innovator, and organist. His musical ingenuity - he instituted the novel practice of using thumb and little finger on the keys of the organ - seems to have been endless. However, his extraordinary talents do not seem to have affected the way he lived. He never moved out of the German province of Thuringia-Saxony and his home-life was humdrum. Bach fathered several good musicians and earned greater respect for his work in his adoptive home-town of Leipzig than anywhere else. Born in Eisenach, Germany, Johann Sebastian Bach was the most influential member of a dynasty of Bachs, stretching from at least 1550 to 1850. It was a musical family, but Johann Forkel - who wrote the first biography of Bach in 1802 - tells us that even among them, Johann Sebastian stood out as 'the most instructive, clear and definite teacher there has ever been'. Bach was orphaned at an early age and went to live with an older brother who possessed a volume of music that Johann Sebastian wished to study. Forbidden to do so, the boy resorted to taking the volume at night and copying its contents over many months by moonlight: it may have contributed to his eventual blindness. This kind of determination, combined with a strong sense of right and fairness, sometimes made the composer seem aggressive in later life: he often had profound disagreements with staid councils and prejudiced committees, though in the end, it seems, higher authority usually listened and supported him.

He excelled his forebears and contemporaries, but he did not always receive the respect he deserved in his own lifetime. In 1708 he was appointed court organist in Weimar where he composed most of his works for organ. In Leipzig he eventually took charge of the "University Collegium musicum" and occupied himself with the collection and publication of many of his earlier compositions. Despite widespread neglect for almost a century after his death, Bach is now regarded as one of the greatest of all composers and is still an inexhaustible source of inspiration for musicians. Johann Sebastian Bach Works The six Brandenburg Concertos, BWV 1046 - 1051, dedicated to the Margrave of Brandenburg in 1721, feature a variety of forms and groups of instruments, while the four Orchestral Suites or Overtures, BWV 1066 - 1069, include the famous "Air on the G string", a late 19th century transcription of the "Air from the Suite in D major", BWV 1068.
