    Extractions: Milton Babbitt talks about "Philomel" Still going strong at age 84, renouned composer Milton Babbitt was a founding member of the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Center (see related article ) where he created "Philomel," one of the first compositions of the synthesizer (available on New World Records). Q: What was the origin of "Philomel"? John Hollander, the poet at Yale, knew a great deal about music and had written a lot about it. He wrote a piece for me where I would know exactly what the conditions would be- it would be for solo soprano, there would be at least four sets of speakers around the hall and that it would be a work in which I would record her voice and fabricated and modulated through the synthesizer. It was planned as a twenty minute piece at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, funded by the Ford Foundation. At the time, there were funding four or five works a year- it's indicative of our time that they (or the Rockefeller foundation) don't go near music anymore. John wrote the libretto for me and the piece was basically commissioned for a soprano, Bethany Beardsley. He gave it to me and made some modifications. John wasn't aware of the presence of audience and he didn't realize that certain conjunctions of words might sound strange. The text is highly, sonically organized. He's highly concerned about every aspect the of the English language. It was very much concerned with sound, the sound of words and the relation of the sound to words to what he would knew the music would be, even when he knew what the electronic instrumentation would be.

    Extractions: Indiana University, South Bend This paper conducts an investigation of structure and its relationship to largescale aspects of the musical surface in Milton Babbitt's Phonemena (1969-70), for soprano and synthesized tape (or piano). By examining classic allpartition array structures of Babbitt's second period this paper explains the derivation of Phonemena's unique text and colorful world of sound, while offering insights into the relatively unexplored realm of realization of pitch, timbre, and dynamics by the RCA Mark II Synthesizer. Other issues addressed are aspects of rhythm including a detailed examination of the timepoint array's modular units and their aural function as well as a look at the plethora of contour invariances embedded in the surface of the music projected by the row and array structure. The paper also focuses on the group structure of Phonemena's array and some general implications of its design. While this study is a detailed survey of Phonemena's compositional structures and their realization, it offers a great deal of general information that is applicable to the majority of Babbitt's work.

Joseph Dubiel, Allen Forte, Marion Guck, Andrew Mead, Robert Morris, Joseph Straus, and Robert Taub will read papers on topics related to Milton Babbitt's work as a composer, theorist, and teacher. A complete program will soon be available. Over the past 30 years Mr. Babbitt has been actively involved with the Music Division of the Library of Congress, serving as a consultant on the Coolidge Foundation Committee and lending invaluable assistance regarding the commissioning of the works of other composers. Mr. Babbitt's own works commissioned by the Library of Congress include his String Quartet No. 4, The Joy of More Sextets, and his Piano Quartet. Recently Mr. Babbitt agreet to donate his papers to the Music Division. When it becomes available, the Babbitt Collection will be of special interest to those scholars who wish to study the impact of serialism on American music, the introduction of Schenkerian analysis and set theory into virtually all American university music curricula, and the history and impact of synthesized sound. ssod@loc.gov
