Extractions: Main Composers Magazine Concerts ... Tavener In 1995 I met Denis ApIvor, the octogenarian composer who had been a pupil and friend of Rawsthorne and a close friend of Lambert during the last few years of Lambert s life. ApIvor has written and spoken about the Lambert circle which certainly included Rawsthorne as one of the leading figures: "Following the death of these friends, van Dieren and Heseltine [Peter Warlock], Lambert was more frequently in the company of Rawsthorne than anyone else. He stayed at his Belsize Park flat, and later with the Rawsthornes when the BBCSO moved to Bristol, with the disruption of London by the bombing during the war. One of Constant s more obscure literary creations was a complicated scenario or libretto, to be declaimed to the music of the last movement of Rawsthorne s Piano Concerto (No. 1) which, like so much British music, was composed in a fast 12/8 tarantella time. Lambert had been well schooled in this sort of activity by his frequent involvement in the reading of Edith Sitwell s Fa ade poems with the poet herself." Lambert stayed with the Rawsthornes in Bristol whenever he was within striking distance of the city - until they were bombed out in an air raid. The air raid also destroyed the score and parts of Rawsthorne s Kubla Khan. Written in 1940 as a BBC commission for inclusion in an International Exchange concert to Basle Kubla Khan was set to the poem by Samuel Coleridge and scored for alto and tenor soli, chorus, strings and percussion. Only a piano score survives (in the Rawsthorne archive), and the present writer is working on a new orchestration. Lambert conducted Rawsthorne s First Piano Concerto a number of times including the Last Night of the Proms on 15 September 1945.
Extractions: Born in 1905, the same year as Tippett, Christian Darnton only died in 1981. In a scenario familiar to all who have championed the cause of their own personal favourite amongst neglected English musicians, it is remarkable just how swiftly a craftsman and all his works, many once highly regarded by luminaries of his time, can disappear into the shadows. "The story is nothing new. "Wildheart is dead." wrote Robert Nichols, following the demise of Warlock; the lines could apply equally to Darnton, who, like Warlock, set some of Nichols' poetry. Yet his own world was as complex as any other, and those who remained faithful through a turbulent and finally, rather bitter life: Walter Leigh, Randall Swingler, Edward Clark, Denis ApIvor, to name but four stalwarts, were rewarded with the loyal friendship of a man who never ceased fighting for his beliefs and who wrote some extraordinarily advanced and underrated music. This monograph therefore requires a fair amount of biographical detail.
