Extractions: DENIS ApIVOR was born in the Republic of Eire in 1916, during the April Revolution;and spent most of the first five years of his life in an old country rectory, close to the Shannon, returning to his native Wales during the Civil War of 1921. His mother trained as a Montessori teacher in London, and his father worked at one time at Somerset House; but later trained for the priesthood in Wales. His father was postmaster and a J.P. in the little mining village of Corris Machylleth. ApIvor's grandfather on his mother's side was a land-agent to Lord Boston in Llangtefni, the Anglesey county town; and his grandmother was connected, way back to the 16th century, with an East-Anglian family called Sculthorpe; and her brother, Canon James Sculthorpe Lewis of St Asaph, had been educated at Christ Church, Oxford.

Goossens and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra). Denis ApIvor has even translated the complete poetry of Lorca into English. In all of these compositions, Dr ApIvor evokes a Spanish atmosphere with a remarkably sure hand and without ever degenerating into pastiche. The 1960s ushered in a period of experimentation and development along the lines of serial technique. There had been works built on serial principles such as the Piano Pieces op. 14 which are imaginative and effective. Continuous development and non-thematic process characterise the compositions of the middle period. The largest piano work is The Lyre Playing Idol op. 45, (1968) inspired by a small figurine of an ancient god. Denis ApIvor imagined the god summoning up the dawn, the wind, the rain, the thunder, and the night in movements of vivid magical gesture. (Although about 20 minutes long a recent performance was a great success even for an audience unprepared to appreciate serial music.) The Violoncello Concerto, op. 64 (1976-7) which was performed by the Welsh BBC Orchestra with Raphael Wallfisch as soloist is a powerful and striking work, and which reveals another aspect of Dr ApIvor's compositional skill: his brilliant and vigorous orchestration. There are numerous major works for orchestra from this period as well.

Extractions: and unrecorded. GORDON RUMSON pleads his case. Denis ApIvor was born in 1916 in Eire. Though of Welsh background he has spent most of his creative life in England. For many years he was much influenced by the Viennese serial composers including Webern, and while many of his works have a Spanish colouring, the sound and ideals of the 18th century with their clarity and wit have also left their mark. Intellectually he has been profoundly affected both by T.S. Eliot and Buddhism. From this audacious combination, categorising him instantly as one of Nietzsche's 'Good Europeans', Denis ApIvor has synthesised a meaningful whole with a firm creative hand. The reason for this is simple: Denis ApIvor has the rare gift of melodic creation that gives strength and form to his music. With this innate gift, nurtured by contact with the music of Warlock and van Dieren and developed by careful study, ApIvor has unified the seemingly disparate elements of his life. Neither the varied techniques of composition he has used, nor even the three distinct style periods of his life can disguise his essential nature. His voice can be heard throughout. But for now his voice can only be heard by those who have access to the musical scores or chance to be nearby an isolated performance. It is a tragedy that a composer of such eminent worth is completely unrepresented by performances on CD or even LP (the exception being a single guitar work recorded in the 1980s). Of the 4 operas, 5 symphonies, ballets, concertos, numerous piano works, songs and many chamber pieces for a total of 100 opus numbers, not a note is available and this in spite of performances by eminent musicians such as Sir E. Goossens, Christopher van Kampen, Martin Jones, Julian Bream, del Mar, the Amici String Quartet, Eiluned Davies, the Allegri Quartet and Thea King among others.
