He was the first Iberian composer to become known outside of his own country. Albeniz studied at Leipzig Conservatory and obtained a scholarship to study in Brussels. He later taught in Barcelona and Madrid. His most famous work is Iberia, a collection of 12 complex piano pieces and a synthesis of several music styles. Much of his work was influenced by Andalusian folk music. Shortly before his death, he developed Bright's disease and was nearly an invalid for several years.

A su regreso a Europa en le sigue su estancia en Leipzig , donde comienza a estudiar con Jadassohn y Reinecke . Poco después será presentado al rey Alfonso XII, quien le concede una pensión que le permitirá, unida a otra que obtiene del Conde Morphy , trasladarse al Conservatorio de Bruselas para estudiar con Gevaert y Brassin En Albéniz recibe lecciones de Liszt , lecciones que se impartieron por toda Europa, y que el compositor español recibió al formar parte de la corte de estudiantes que acompañaban a Lizst en sus desplazamientos. La amistad que surgió de esta relación duraría hasta la muerte del húngaro en 1886.
