Book Description
A landmark in art history and the most anticipated art publishing event of the new millennium.

In this groundbreaking and original work of scholarship, four of the most influential and provocative art historians of our time have come together to provide a comprehensive history of art in the twentieth century, an age when artists in the United States, Europe, and elsewhere sought to overturn the traditions of the past and expectations of the present in order to invent new practices and forms.

Adopting a unique year-by-year approach, Foster, Krauss, Bois, and Buchloh present more than 50 short essays, each focusing on a crucial event—the creation of a seminal work, the publication of an artistic manifesto, the opening of a major exhibition—to tell the story of the dazzling diversity of practice and interpretation that characterizes the art of the period. All the turning points and breakthroughs of modernism and postmodernism are explored in depth, as are the frequent and sustained antimodernist reactions that proposed alternative visions of art and the world. Illustrating the authors' texts are more than 300 of the most important works of the century, many reproduced in full color.

The book's flexible structure and extensive cross-referencing allow readers to follow any one of the many narratives that unfold, whether that be the history of a medium such as photography or painting, the development of art in a particular country, the influence of a movement such as surrealism or feminism, or the emergence of a stylistic or conceptual category like abstraction or minimalism. Boxes give further background information on the important figures and issues.

In their insightful introductions, the four authors explain the different methods of art history at work in the book, providing the reader with the conceptual tools for further study. A roundtable discussion at the close of the book considers the questions raised by the preceding decades and look ahead to the art of the future. A glossary of terms and concepts completes this extraordinary volume. 300 illustrations, 200 in color. This college edition also includes the Art 20 CD-ROM. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars One of the worst books I've ever read.
As a visual studies major, I've read my fair share of theory and art history books, and this is by far the worst. It is filled with statements that ramble on for full paragraphs leave you looking for both the period and the point. The reader gets the impression that an intoxicated art historian is rambling on at a party, completely unaware of how uninteresting he or she is, or how little sense is being made. The legitimate information in this book could be presented in a pamphlet.I was forced to read this, and sift through 704 pages of hay to find the needle.I literally read this book while walking on a treadmill in order to maintain consciousness.

1-0 out of 5 stars WHO KNEW THAT ART HISTORIANS STILL THINK THIS WAY?
The best example I've ever seen of art historians taking themselves so seriously that almost every paragraph drips with pretension. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars student review
This book was recommended for the senior-level art history course at the art academy I currently attend. Clear, erudite reading, followed by colorful reproductions and chronological tabs. The visual breakdowns are though-provoking, often raising more than one opinion of the piece. Elaboration on the artist, their backround, and their life really helps the reader understand the piece of art and the subject matter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, though not very "pretty"
I am currently getting my bachelors in art history, and have a soft spot for beautiful books. The Art Since 1900 book was very useful in my modern art class, and fascinating to read. It does not read like a textbook. Rather, it is a series of essays regarding specific moments in modern art. The authors provide keys to link relevant essays without having to figure out the relations of time, place, and style. There are plenty of images, and the writing is very accessible for a beggining modernist. However, it is a paperback that is easily shelf-worn, and the book itself is not particularly beautiful, in comparison to many of the art history survey books that are out there. ... Read more

Book Description
October: The Second Decade collects examples of the innovative critical and theoretical work for which the journal October is known. A journal anthology draws a collective portrait; together, the gathered texts demonstrate the journal's ambitions and strengths. From the outset, October's aim has been to consider a range of cultural practices and to assess their place at a particular historical juncture. That task has now taken on an intensified urgency. The catastrophic state of our urban economies and the attendant social crises, as well as the more general predicaments of a postcolonial era, have had an inescapable impact on the cultural and discursive practices that are October's concern. Hence, October in its second decade has had an intensified concern with the role of cultural production within the public sphere and a sharper focus on the intersections of cultural practices with institutional structures. The topics of inquiry include body politics and psychoanalysis, spectacle and institutional critique, art practice and art history, and postcolonial discourse.

Book Description
Featuring unparalleled depth of detail and insightful commentary, this latest addition to a comprehensive survey of Norman Foster, the Pritzker Prize-winning architect focuses on works from the 1980s to the early 1990s.

Norman Foster: Works 2 explores several of the architect's most recognizable buildings, including the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank Headquarters in Hong Kong, which virtually reinvented the office tower; the Sackler Galleries at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, a project that epitomizes the effective intervention of contemporary design within historical buildings; and the Carré d'Art in Nîmes, which unified architecture and urbanism to create a vibrant new cultural core at the heart of the city.

Bringing together contributions from noted commentators alongside essays and observations from Norman Foster and his colleagues this overview reveals the key characteristics of Foster's distinctive design philosophy, showing how a commitment to social and environmental concerns and the exploration of new technologies have been at the heart of his practice from the outset. ... Description:
To investigate the sources, fate, and transport dynamics of PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) in stormwater runoff that is a leading source of pollution in urban watersheds, storm and base flow samples were collected in six branches along the lower Anacostia River. PAHs in storm flow (1510-12,500ng/L) were significantly enriched in the particle phase, which accounted for 68-97% of the total PAHs. It suggests that reducing particles in stormwater using post-treatment system would decrease PAHs considerably. The solid-water distribution coefficients (K"D) of PAHs in the storm flow samples were up to 340 times higher than predicted values. A greater portion of high molecular weight PAHs and their distribution patterns indicate higher contribution of automobile originated pyrogenic PAHs. Total suspended solids in storm flow had a positive relationship with flow rates and exceeded benchmark level for the protection of aquatic biota in some samples. ... Read more
