Extractions: William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) was born in Lancaster, Ohio. In 1840 he graduated from West Point and in 1850 married Ellen Ewing. Sherman was made general of the army in 1869 when Ulysses Grant was inaugurated president. Along with Grant and Robert E. Lee, Sherman is one of the most renowned generals of the Civil War. He retired from active service in 1883 and moved to New York in 1886. Saint-Gaudens modeled a bust of the general in 1888. This bust served as a study for the 1903 equestrian monument to the Civil War leader. Work on the Sherman Monument was begun in 1892 in Saint-Gaudens New York studio, continued in Paris, and was finished in Cornish, NH, in 1901. The bronze was cast by Thiebault Brothers in Paris. The setting and pedestal were designed by architect Charles McKim . The monument was unveiled on May 30, 1903, at the entrance to New Yorks Central Park. (continued)

He was a renowned Union general during the U.S. Civil War and was among the first military leaders to recognize and put into practice the methods that became the tenets of modern warfare. At the start of the Civil War the fiery-tempered Sherman was a colonel and commanded a brigade at the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861. When Grant became general in chief, Sherman commanded the large Union army of approximately 100,000 men that moved southeast from Dalton, Ga. Although roundly defeated in rash attacks at Kenesaw Mountain, he captured Atlanta in September 1864 after a long series of cat-and-mouse contests with Joseph E. Johnston. An aggressive leader, Sherman was expert in planning and executing long marches and in mastering difficult logistical problems. Spreading out his army about 50 miles wide, he conducted a scorched-earth campaign against the Confederacy ravaging the unprotected Georgia countryside in the famous March to the Sea (Nov. 16-Dec. 22,1864) that resulted in the capture of Savannah. In 1840 Sherman graduated from the U.S. Military Academy near the top of his class. He served in a variety of positions throughout the South and garnered no special notice. During the Mexican War , Sherman had a desk assignment in San Francisco while many other officers were gaining experience that would be put to use in the Civil War. In 1853 Sherman resigned from the army and entered the field of banking, first in San Francisco and later in New York City. This foray into the financial world was cut short by the Panic of 1857 . Sherman worked briefly as a lawyer in Kansas. Through the auspices of friends P.G.T. Beauregard and Braxton Bragg , Sherman secured a position as the superintendent of a military academy in Louisiana (which would later relocate and become Louisiana State University). When Louisiana seceded in 1861, Sherman resigned and settled in St. Louis. With an assist from his younger brother, Senator John Sherman of Ohio, he was able to secure a position in the army. On "Headquarters Army of the United States / St. Louis" stationery. Sherman has lined through St. Louis and written "Washington D.C." To Joseph Audenreid (one of Sherman's key aides). Two horizontal mailing folds, with some toning at the folds on page four. In fine to very fine condition. With extraordinary content, this letter is mostly political, but with an interesting personal note after Audenreid's death in 1880, Sherman began a long term love affair with his wife, Mary Audenreid. Extractions: 2 folders The Riley Papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Robert C. Hanger on 30 June 1980 (Accession No. 4289). Lewis Riley emigrated with his wife Anna Little Riley from Crawford County, Illinois to Tuscumbia, Missouri, about 1857. They were the parents of eight children. Riley bought land in Miller County, Missouri. He died during the Civil War in 1863 of typhoid fever. The Riley Papers consist of letters from a 6th Missouri, Union cavalryman (Wood's Battalion) to his wife describing battles and scrimmages in the South, particularly at Vicksburg, Mississippi; near Memphis, Tennessee; and Little Rock, Arkansas. The letters describe the morale in his unit, cavalry raids into Mississippi from Helena, Arkansas, and fighting around Vicksburg and the siege and surrender of that city. There are also letters from Rileys friends to their relatives, a deed for land in Miller County, receipts, and a pension certificate issued to Rileys survivors. Extractions: General Grant as Sherman If the question was asked, "Who was and still is the most hated and despised man in the history of Georgia" the response would be William Tecumseh Sherman. From the onset of hostilities in the Atlanta Campaign on May 6, 1864 and the March to the Sea ending two days before Christmas 1864 with him capturing Savannah, no one created more destruction. As a result of his successful campaign in Georgia, the Confederacy was split in two and deprived of much needed supplies, ending the war quickly with a Union victory. Born on February 8, 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, his father died when he was young. Widowed and unable to care for the entire family, his mother sent brother Thomas to be raised by an aunt and William became a foster child to Thomas Ewing, his father's friend. Cump, as he was known, later married Mr. Ewing's daughter, Ellen. Educated at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, he graduated in 1840. During the Mexican War, Sherman was posted in San Francisco. He resigned his commission in 1853 to become a partner in a bank there. Prior to the outbreak of hostilities between the North and the South, William Tecumseh Sherman was Superintendent of the Louisiana State Seminary and Military Academy at Alexandria, Louisiana. After the war, the school moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana and became Louisiana State University (LSU). Talk of the secession from the Union was rampant, yet the motto of the seminary was "By the liberality of the General Government of the United States, the Union - esto perpetua." On January 18, 1861, Sherman resigned his position stating that he preferred to maintain his allegiance to the Constitution as long as a fragment of it survived. On the 25th of February, Sherman left Louisiana and returned to Ohio. He remained in Lancaster for a month and then moved his family to St. Louis, Missouri where he was elected President of the Fifth Street Railroad.
