At the age of eleven he travelled, with his family, to America, where they set up a home at Fountain Lake, Wisconsin. His life is beautifully summed up in this memorial to him, found at Fountain Lake's John Muir Memorial Park. "He came to America as a lad of eleven, spent his 'teen years in hard work clearing the farm across this lake, carving out a home in the wilderness. In the 'sunny woods, overlooking a lake rimmed with water lilies', he found an environment that fanned the fire of his zeal and love for all nature, which, as a man, drove him to study, afoot, alone and unafraid, the forests, mountains and glaciers of the west, to become the most rugged, fervent naturalist America has produced and the father of the National Parks of our country." John Muir emigrated to Wisconsin in the United States of America at the age of eleven. He settled in California in his mature years, after a period of travel and exploration. There he played a crucial role in creating Yosemite National Park. As a result of his lifelong struggle on behalf of wild places and wildlife, Americans honour Muir as 'The Father of Our National Parks'. For many millions of Californians, John Muir is regarded in the same light as Abraham Lincoln or Andrew Carnegie, and his writings are as celebrated as those of Robert Burns or Robert Louis Stevenson. Yet in Britain he is largely unknown and even in the land of his birth few Scots have heard of him.

Influenced heavily by the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau , he shared their regard for the unity, order, and harmony of nature, their trust in nature's power to illuminate the higher laws of the mind, and their pantheistic approach to imagination and transcendence. Although their ideas were by no means the same as his, Muir devotedly carried and marked copies of Emerson's and Thoreau's works on his hikes and climbs in the Sierra Nevada and elsewhere in the west.
