Extractions: Feast day July 9th Thomas More was born in London, England, on February 7, 1478. It is said that before his birth, his mother saw a vision of her future, saintly son, in splendour. Thomas received the first part of his education at St. Anthony's School. Later he studied at Canterbury College, in Oxford. After that he went to study Law in London, and became a very popular lawyer. For a while, Thomas felt that perhaps he should become a monk in the Franciscan or Carthusian Order. Finally he realized that this was not his vocation, so in 1505 he got married. In 1510, his wife died and he married another women, so that she could take care of his four small children. In 1504, Thomas was elected to Parliament. In 1516, he published his book "Utopia", (an unreal place where social life and politics were perfect.) In 1518, he became the Secretary of King Henry VIII, and in 1521, Henry made him a Knight. In 1523, he was made Chancellor of Lancaster. In September 1527, King Henry, questioned Sir Thomas about getting a divorce. The Chancellor would not give an immediate answer the King's question. In 1529, the King made Thomas, Lord Chancellor of England. Henry still wanted to get a divorce! Thomas begged the King to change his mind but he had no success. So he stopped working as Chancellor because he wanted to remain faithful to God and to the Pope.

He received a Latin education in the household of Cardinal Morton and at Oxford. Through his contact with the new learning and his friendships with Colet Lyly , and Erasmus , More became an ardent humanist. As a successful London lawyer, he attracted the attention of Henry VIII , served him on diplomatic missions, entered the king's service in 1518, and was knighted in 1521. More held important government offices and, despite his disapproval of Henry's divorce from , he was made lord chancellor at the fall of Wolsey (1529). He resigned in 1532 because of ill health and probably because of increasing disagreement with Henry's policies. Because of his refusal to subscribe to the Act of Supremacy, which impugned the pope's authority and made Henry the head of the English Church, he was imprisoned (1534) in the Tower and finally beheaded on a charge of treason.

Extractions: Thomas More (1478-1535) was an English lawyer and scholar whose writings became famous throughout Europe in the early sixteenth century. In that period, " humanists " were attacking the established educational system of the medieval universities (" scholasticism ") and advocating wide-ranging political, social and educational reforms. More was one of the most famous of the humanists (another was his friend Erasmus ). In 1516 the first edition of More's Utopia was published; it criticized many aspects of life in contemporary Europe and established a whole new type of writing and outlook on life (" utopianism "). Much of what More said in Utopia was ironical and not intended to be taken at face value, but just how much remains unclear. For the last 485 years there has been no agreement on what Utopia means. Some people think the book is just a joke; others argue that most of it is meant very seriously, and that More wanted the Europeans of his age to imitate the Utopians described in the book. Utopia was written (in Latin, for educated people) at a time when Europeans were just beginning to sail across oceans to previously unknown lands. The book claimed to be a description of such a new land (though the fact that its title is Greek for "no place" gave away that it was fiction - at least to people who knew Greek!). Extractions: THOMAS MOORE The Life of Sir Thomas More (1478-1535) Thomas More was born in Milk Street, London on February 7, 1478, son Sir John More, a prominent judge. He was educated at St Anthony's School in London. As a youth he served as a page in the household of Archbishop Morton, who predecited he would be a "marvellous man."1. More went on to study at Oxford under Thomas Linacre and William Grocyn. During this time, he wrote comedies and studied Greek and Latin literature. One of his first works was an English translation of a Latin biography of the Italian humanist Pico della Mirandola. It was printed by Wynkyn de Worde in 1510. Around 1494 More returned to London to study law, was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1496, and became a barrister in 1501. Yet More did not automatically follow in his father's footsteps. He was torn between a monastic calling and a life of civil service. While at Lincoln's Inn, he determined to become a monk and subjected himself to the discipline of the Carthusians, living at a nearby monastery and taking part of the monastic life. The prayer, fasting, and penance habits stayed with him for the rest of his life. More's desire for monasticism was finally overcome by his sense of duty to serve his country in the field of politics. He entered Parliament in 1504, and married for the first time in 1504 or 1505. More became a close friend with Desiderius Erasmus (ca. 1466-1536) during the latter's first visit to England in 1499. It was the beginning of a lifelong friendship and correspondence. They produced Latin translations of Lucian's works, printed at Paris in 1506, during Erasmus' second visit. On Erasmus' third visit, in 1509, he wrote Encomium Moriae, or Praise of Folly, (1509), dedicating it to More.
