In 1504 he entered Parliament, but he was forced to retire from public life after urging a decrease in a proposed appropriation for King Henry VII. After the death of the king in 1509, More became active once more. During the next decade, More attracted the attention of King Henry VIII. Henry VIII made More one of his favorites and often sought his company for philosophical conversations. More became lord chancellor in 1529; he was the first layman to hold the post. His fortunes changed, however, when he refused to support Henry's request for a divorce from Catherine of Aragón. More resigned from the chancellorship in 1532 and withdrew from public notice. The king had him imprisoned in 1534. More was tried the following year; he refused to take an oath of supremacy, asserting that Parliament did not have the right to usurp papal authority in favor of the king. More was decapitated in 1535. In 1935 he was canonized by the Roman Catholic church. Back to Homepage

A leading figure of English humanism, More was one of the most versatile and talented men of his age. His writings include a biography of Pico della Mirandola (1510) and The History of Richard 111 (c1513, posthumously pub 1543), which was based on an earlier account by Cardinal M orton. Utopia (1516), his most famous literary work, was written in Latin. A loyal defender of Roman Catholicism he engaged in vigorous controversies with the Protestant fieretics of the time, especially with William Tyndale , against whom he wrote A Dialogue Concerning Heresies More held important positions in the government of his time, being a Member of Parliament, an envoy on several missions abroad, a court official, and ultimately Lord Chancellor, succeeding Cardinal Wolsey in 1529. Though he had been a long-time friend and favorite of Henry VIII More was a staunch Catholic and could not accept Henry's position, announced in 1531, that the king and not the Pope was the head of the Church in England. More resigned from the Chancellorship in 1532. He wrote a justification of his position in An Apology of Sir Thomas More (1533). Two years later, Parliament passed a bill requiring that all subjects take an oath acknowledging the supremacy of Henry over all other foreign kings, including the Pope. More refused, was imprisoned, and was finally executed a year later. He was beatified in 1886 and was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1935.

From THE REFORMER, March/April 2001 The Protestant Alliance, 77 Ampthill Rd., Flitwick, Bedford, MK45 1BD, England When Thomas More and Bishop John Fisher were canonized (a declaration by a pope that a person is in Heaven and worthy of veneration) in 1935, the British press filled their columns with superstitious accounts of the lives of these men. Similarly, last year, when it was made known that the present Pope, John Paul II, was to make Thomas More "patron saint of politicians" it was given considerable coverage in the press, and of course, by the BBC! John Gummer, former Anglican who went over to Rome, was delighted and was reported as saying he could not think of any section of the community which needed one more, while the TIMES of 4th November 2000 gave a glowing report of the Rev. Cormac Murphy O'Connor, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster, and his plans to attend the ceremony along with twenty-five (misguided) Members of Parliament. Extractions: Authors: Anthony Munday wrote the original script of Sir Thomas More between 1592 and 1595. However, the master of revels (censor) at that time prevented its performance because scenes showing Londoners rioting might set a bad example. Years before, in 1559, Queen Elizabeth I had issued orders banning the presentation of plays which, in the opinion of government authorities, disparaged the established religion (the Church of England) or the government. Other writers later revised the play, making it less politically provocative. Among those writers, according to strong evidence, was William Shakespeare.

Among his other works in Latin and English are a translation of The Life of John Picus, Earl of Mirandula (1510); a History of Richard III, upon which Shakespeare based his play; a number of polemical tracts against the Lutherans (1528-33); devotional works including A Dialogue of Comfort against Tribulation (1534) and a Treatise on the Passion (1534); poems; meditations; and prayers. More was beatified (1886) by a decree of Pope Leo XIII and canonized (1935) by Pius XI. His complete works have been published by Yale (16 vol., 1963-85); his correspondence (ed. by E. F. Rogers, 1947) contains all his letters except those to Erasmus. The biography of More by his son-in-law William Roper (ed. by E. V. Hitchcock, 1935) has been the principal source of later biographies, particularly the standard modern biography by R. W. Chambers (1935). See the biography by Richard Marius (1984); studies by R.
