A pioneer in the application of psychology to medicine, he won special fame for his treatment of nervous disorders and for his study of the nervous system. His medical works include treatises on snake venom and neurology, as well as Injuries of Nerves and Their Consequences (1872) and Fat and Blood (1877), which summarizes his well-known rest cure. Among his novels are historical romances ( Hugh Wynne, Free Quaker, 1896) and psychological studies ( Constance Trescot, 1905). He wrote several volumes of poetry and interspersed lyrics in his novels. See biography by J. P. Lovering (1971).

The reason for this is that our understanding of the neurochemistry and neurophysiology of the nervous system remains at a primitive level and isn't much more advanced than the "phlogiston" theories.. There do exist, however, a number of plausible assumptions which we accept. These presently serve as a reasonable framework upon which we can build. In the early days when chemical theories were first being advanced the phenomenon of fire (combustion, now known to be oxidation) was elucidated by the sages as representing the liberation of a substance referred to as "phlogiston". This term, which derives from the Greek language, means "burned". In early times pain was thought to be a reflection of the body part receiving "phlogiston" from its proximity to fire. In this illustration, published by Ren Descates (1596-1650) in 1644, the "phlogiston" is said to set a spot on the skin in motion, pulling then on a thread traveling through the body to the brain where a bell strikes. This theory was not challenged until the work of Antoine Lavoiser between 1770 and 1790. Perhaps the first modern concept relating to the nervous system as a "traffic manager" of afferent information was the work of Glen Player who published his treatise on the "Obscuration Phenomenon" in 1952:

Son of King Ban of Benwick, he is known as Lancelot of the Lake or Lancelot du Lac because he was raised by the Lady of the Lake. Among his many adventures are the rescue of the abducted Queen Guinevere from Meleagant, an unsuccessful quest for the Holy Grail and the rescue of the queen after she is condemned to be burned to death for adultery. Lancelot is loved by Elaine of Astolat, who dies because her love is unrequited. Elaine, the daugher of King Pelles, tricks Lancelot into sleeping with her and from that union Galahad is born. His love for Guinevere ultimately brings about the downfall of Arthur's realm.

Five of the fellowships, of 9 to 12 months duration, are for $35,000. The sixth, 6 to 8 months long, is for $24,000. The stipends are provided through equal contributions from the two agencies. "Humanities scholars bring important perspectives to bear on health issues," said NEH Chairman William R. Ferris. "NEH's partnership with HHS's Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality will help place contemporary healthcare in a broad historical and philosophical context." "We are pleased to collaborate with the National Endowment for the Humanities to support these studies and future research at the intersection between the humanities and health," said John M. Eisenberg, M.D., AHRQ's director. "This research offers the essential cultural and historical context needed to understand the important role that health and healthcare play in our society, and also provides an important framework for the contributions to understanding ways to improve healthcare that are made by the health services research supported by AHRQ."

Cannon was head of the Council for the Defence of Medical Research of the American Medical Association from 1908 to 1936. He and his colleague William W. Keen monitored antivivisectionist activity, mobilized the medical profession, lobbied politicians, testified in public hearings, and wrote tirelessly in defense of animal experimentation. Cannon was George Higginson Professor of Physiology at Harvard Medical School and head of its physiology department. Keen was a prominent surgeon and neurologist from Philadelphia. The Cannon Papers consist of over 1.5 linear feet of correspondence, 1905-1928, primarily between Cannon (1871-1945) and Keen (1837-1932) regarding their mutual opposition to the antivivisection movement.
