I out-take (except) nothing but in all things I will find thee made bare: else, how canst thou be mine and I thine, unless thou be deprived outwardly and inwardly from all thine own will? The more swiftly that thou lost this the better it shall be with thee; and the more plainly and clearly it is done the more shalt thou please me and the more thou shalt win. Some resign, but with some exception, for they trust not fully to God; wherefore they labour to provide for themselves. Some also first offer all but afterwards through a little temptation they go again to their own selves and therefore profit not in virtue. Then folk come not to true liberty of heart, nor to the grace of my jocund familiarity except with whole resignation and daily offering of themselves first being made, without which unity of fruition (pure enjoyment) standeth not, nor shall stand. I have said to thee full oft, and yet I say again: Forsake thyself, resign of thyself and thou shalt enjoy great peace. Give all for all, seek nothing, ask nothing again; stand purely and undoubtingly in me and thou shalt have me; thou shalt be free in heart and darkness shall not over go (overwhelm) thee. To this enforce thyself, this pray thou, this desire thou, that thou may be despoiled on all manner of self, and thou, bare, follow bare Jhesu (Jesus only) and die to thyself and live everlastingly to me. Extractions: January 18, 1999 More than just a devotional book, The Imitation might be described as a "How To" book: how to imitate Christ, both externally (in one's life) and internally (in one's spiritual being). Perhaps the "how to" should include how to live with others, with oneself, and with Christ at all times. The book has been deeply influential and highly revered for more than 500 years. (Page numbers below refer to Thomas a Kempis, The Imitation of Christ . Tr. Leo Sherley-Price, New York: Penguin, 1952.) 1. A major theme throughout the Imitation is that we live and act unthinkingly and therefore without a reasonable direction to our lives. We also act without true knowledge and without plan or proper measure to our lives. This thoughtless, ignorant behavior brings us much grief. 2. It follows, then, that true enlightenment comes from (1) self knowledge and (2) a knowledge of and trust in God. 3. If you are familiar with stoicism, watch for echoes of it as you read. There are many similar passages in Thomas and in Marcus Aurelius, for example.

Recently when examining family graves on the old monastery grounds at Mount St. Agnes I was reminded of a Meditation, about periodic resolutions, by Thomas a Kempis in his famous book, The Imitation of Christ . Kempis wrote that (1) if on every resolution we made, (2) if we really lived up to that resolution and if really completely and permanently rid ourselves of that sin, then (3) we would be making some real progress. How right he was about the gains that would accrue from thoroughly liquidating a sin rather than never perfectly getting rid of it! Similarly, we think how wonderful it would be if people would completely and permanently get rid of the idea that intrinsically self-love and all gratification of self-love is sin. They may in more lucid moments realize that self-love is not sin, and that it is in fact a great virtue, but they "fall from grace" in regard to this insight. A day or two later they talk sanctimoniously again as if self-love were sin! They have made no more progress than the man making New Year resolutions (about whom Thomas a Kempis wrote) who never really liquidated his inclination to even one specific sin.
