ON the Feast of St. Mark, in the year of grace 1792, a son was born to the parson of Fairford, Gloucestershire, who was to transform the Anglican Communion, and shine as the brightest star in her firmament. Bright stars were needed, for the night was dark. A deep torpor had fallen upon the Church, which seemed like to die of senile decay. There were such dense clouds of ignorance that the loveliness of Keble's life was realized by few of his contemporaries. Fearful storms blotted out other stars, as brilliant, as pure, as purposeful. But as they "went out," he remained to turn many to righteousness, and "shine as the stars for ever." As a boy John Keble showed remarkable promise. Unlike Newman and Faber, but like Pusey, he was grounded in High Anglicanism. His father, who had a leaning towards the Non-jurors, and loathed the Methodism of Wesley, taught him up to the age of sixteen, when he was elected a student of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. At the age of eighteen he brilliantly carried off double first-class honours, hitherto the proud record of Sir Robert Peel. At nineteen be was made a Fellow of Oriel. Oriel College was the nursery of the Oxford Movement. There he met Newman, whom he converted to Anglo-Catholicism. Newman had looked upon Keble as "something one would put under a glass and put on one's chimney piece to admire, but as too unworldly for business," a superficial judgment that changed to ardent worship, as contact revealed new facets of his rock-like character, and communion the riches of his mind and soul.

Psalm 84:11 John Keble, the son of an Anglican country preacher, was born at Fairford, Gloucestershire, England, on April 25, 1792. Following his training at Oxford University, he served as a professor of poetry at that school for ten years. From 1835 until his death in 1866 he served the humble parish church in the village of Hursley, England, a population of 1,500 people. In 1827 Keble published a volume of poems entitled The Christian Year, with all of the poems following the church calendar year. "Sun of My Soul" was one of the poems from that collection. It was never intended, however, to be used as a hymn. It was Keble's intention that his book of poetry be a devotional companion to the Anglican Book of Common Prayer. Being an extremely modest man, Keble had his book of poems published anonymously. The book proved extremely successful, going through 109 editions before Keble's death in 1866. He used the proceeds from the book to maintain the ministry of his small church at Hursley. In 1833 Keble preached at Oxford his famous sermon on "National Apostasy" which is credited with originating the nineteenth century Oxford Movement. The leaders of this movement sought to bring about a spiritual awakening in the Church of England without resorting to the more aggressive practices of the evangelical leaders of this time, the Wesleys and Whitefield followers. The Oxford Leaders were of the conviction that they had to increase the ritualistic and liturgical practices of the church in order to deepen this spiritual awakening. Extractions: On the Eighth Sunday after Pentecost "On 14th July 1833, Mr. Keble preached the assize sermon in the University Pulpit. It was published under the title of National Apostasy . I have ever considered and kept the day as the start of the religious movement of 1833." Thus wrote John Henry Newman (1801-90) in his autobiographical Apologia The day is well worth considering and keeping, for the "religious movement of 1833", which came to be known as the Oxford Movement, though often controversial and divisive, profoundly influenced Anglican religious life. The Church of the Transfiguration has from its beginnings been steeped in the ideals of the Oxford Movement, making this church a particularly appropriate place to continue Newman's custom of observing July 14th. The hymns at today's service are an integral part of our commemoration. The hymn was greatly reinvigorated in the 19th century, having suffered considerable neglect in the preceding centuries. Thus, hymns were an important component of the Oxford Movement, and two of its founders and principal exponents, John Keble (1792-1866) and John Henry Newman, were gifted writers of hymn texts.
